James Gunn's DC Universe

So the trailer broke all of the DC/Warner Brothers records with over 250 million views in one day.  Fanboy youtubers are posting reaction videos of themselves tearing up.  Fangirls are swooning.

Meanwhile, a few are complaining that the opening shows that he's weak...and they are completely ignoring the fact that the motherfucker hit the ground at what looked to be terminal velocity.  Yeah, he's a weakened Superman, but I'm pretty certain that if anybody complaining hit the ground that hard, they could be poured into their coffin.

And they are completely ignoring that a huge part of the first Christopher Reeves movie was literally Superman being held captive by Lex Luthor, and Lois Lane dying and the West Coast collapsing until Lex Luthor's girlfriend frees Superman, who does his timey-wimey thing.  And then in the Cavill movies, Batman nearly kills him in Batman vs Superman, until discovering that Martha was their mom.

People will bitch about just about anything. Guy Gardner's haircut. Krypto being in the movie. Mr. Terrific's costume. I don't know why people can't just trust James Gunn to do a good job given his previous record of resetting what a superhero movie can be. I think the intro to the trailer being Superman crashing into the ice is to show this is a more grounded Superman who isn't invulnerable or god-like. You can't just have a lazy story where it's either something kryptonite based that levels the playing field or a ridiculous weapon like Doomsday to hurt Superman. I am really only a Superman fan because of Christopher Reeve and I will be at the Thursday showing for this one. It looks like the perfect movie to start Gunn's new universe.

I mean, why does he wear a cape? It doesn't help him fly, right? Seems it would get in the way sometimes.

/nerd Because back in the day when they were first creating the Superman comics and the printing presses weren't always that good, they needed a way to show movement through the air, and a cape was the easiest way to do it.  If the cape is down, he's moving up, if it's raised/above him, he's landing, etc.  Originally Superman just jumped really far distances (leap tall buildings in a single bound). Otherwise, he looks like he's hovering in air. Also, they took inspiration for Superman from circus strongmen, who wore tights and capes.

Eventually they made it part of the lore that the cape could function as a shield for humans, bulletproof and heatproof, etc.
