Hoping this doesn’t duck up some of the good stuff Paramount+ has put out, and my kids love the Nickelodeon content.  This is just the streaming platforms.

In connection with the changes, executives warned of likely layoffs and changes to programming to follow in the coming weeks. Paramount CEO Bob Bakish announced the move in a memo to staff Monday afternoon, confirming rumors that have been brewing for some time.

For starters, both the Showtime linear pay-TV channel and the premium tier of Paramount+ will be rebranded as Paramount+ With Showtime, with Chris McCarthy to lead the Showtime studio and linear channel and Tom Ryan overseeing the streaming business.

So Showtime shows that aren’t deemed core to those strengths may get the boot. On Monday, the first three shows to face the ax were revealed by the channel, with scripted dramas Let the Right One In and American Gigolo getting canceled and the Shailene Woodley-led adaptation of Three Women no longer moving forward at the premium cable network. The latter series, which has already completed production, is being shopped to other outlets.

I don’t subscribe to Showtime, so if the price stays the same, and Nick stuff doesn’t get dropped, I’m happy.

If this means that since I already subscribe to Showtime and can get Paramount for nothing sounds great.

Vice versa for me, hoping the same thing.

I do the annual Showtime Anytime subscription for $99 but I use my neighbor's Paramount account.

I'm not sure what my play is to save money.

January 8th, Paramount+ with Showtime

The show is over for Showtime as a standalone brand.

As of Jan. 8, 2024, Paramount Global will rebrand the linear Showtime cable network as Paramount+ With Showtime — the same name as the company’s top-tier streaming package. With the name change, the premium cable network will add select Paramount+ original series.

Confusingly, however, some subscribers of the linear Showtime channel will not have access to the Paramount+ With Showtime streaming plan. Instead, Paramount+ With Showtime cable subscribers will be able to access programming online via the authenticated streaming apps of pay-TV partners. Paramount Global does have agreements with some large pay-TV providers that allow Showtime cable subscribers to also access the Paramount+ With Showtime streaming service.

Well, here’s some cool news. Paramount has added 50 classic episodes of MTV Unplugged to its streaming service. Some of these episodes haven’t been officially available to watch for over 20 years.

And now Paramount+ has added a ton of classic MTV Unplugged episodes, including famous performances by Nirvana and Alice in Chains.

As noted in a press release by Paramount, many of these Unplugged episodes “haven’t been available in 20+ years.” Sure, you could find some of the most famous ones on YouTube in various levels of quality, but most were much trickier to find and the versions floating around online looked and sounded terrible. So it’s really nice to have a large chunk of music history accessible again. Well, accessible if you have Paramount+. I have the service because I loveStar Trek and Survivor, and I rewatch Frasier. If you ask nicely I’ll share my account with you.

One of the Unplugged episodes added to Paramount+ features the infamous 1996 performance by Oasis. That episode almost didn’t happed because days before the event, Liam Gallagher reportedly complained of a sore throat. And when the band finally showed up an hour before taping, he was apparently very drunk. Noel Gallagher, his brother, ended up singing the entire show on his own. This episode existed in some low-quality forms online already, but now you can watch a pristine version of this famous concert that almost wasn’t.

Beyond Unplugged, Paramount+ has also added a ton of VH1 Storytellersepisodes, too. This was a similar show to Unplugged, but even more stripped down and with the artists talking more about their lives or the origins of their songs in between numbers.

That sounds pretty crappy.

It’s worse than you think, and I might have to watch it

Noel's recollection:

"The day of the performance, Liam hadn't turned up and there were rumours that he'd been out drinking for a couple of days... and nobody knew where he was."

"About an hour before we were due to go on, he turned up absolutely shitfaced. We said, well look, let's see if you can sing a couple of songs, and it was fucking dreadful."

So the band - at the very last minute - performed the MTV Unplugged show, with Noel singing his own lyrics. It was an amazing solo performance by Noel, but I wish Liam had arrived reasonably sober to the gig and had participated in a few songs despite claims of a sore throat.

Always felt this unplugged show was a moment of anarchy for Oasis.

——-

>>> Was there not a story from this that Liam he had a sore throat but he was seen on camera drinking and smoking and heckling Noel from a balcony?

Yes, this is correct. Noel makes reference to him a couple of times throughout the broadcast. Late in the show, Liam attempted to come down and sing an encore, but was kept off stage. There's a video about this somewhere on YouTube with clips featuring people from MTV who were working on the preparation and production of the show.

——

And Kurt Loder said something to the effect of “Oasis without the lead singer, or Oasis as it always should have been”. That was a fucking magical performance and I’m listening to it right now.

And Noel has such a great sense of humor. Before Cast No Shadow, he says “I’d like to carry on with one that I wrote…”. He wrote all of them 🤣🤣🤣 he was basically trolling Liam at that point, probably knowing what an absolutely brilliant performance the band was having. Man… 1996 was a such a great time to be alive.

——

The day before the show, MTV taped the full rehearsal. Liam sang all the songs he was supposed to sing. MTV contemplated using that footage mixed in with audience shots from the night Noel sang. In the end, they decided to just use the Noel performance and save money on the editing that would have been needed.
