There is enough of a gap from 8 to 7 that we can stop here. It's not just making up 14 points, but also needing to jump 6 teams as well.

Miami's MLS schedule the rest of the way:

8/26 @ NY Red Bulls
8/30 vs Nashville
9/3 @ LAFC
9/9 vs Sporting KC
9/16 @ Atlanta United
9/20 vs Toronto
9/24 @ Orlando City
9/30 vs New York City
10/4 @ Chicago
10/7 vs Cincinnati
10/21 @ Charlotte

TBD: vs Charlotte - this was their game in hand from the Leagues Cup

key dates:

9/4-12 and 10/9-17 - the two international breaks (Sporting KC game is in the first)
9/27 - US OPEN CUP FINAL

They get chances to play all of them, but DC, and have two against Charlotte.

I can see a number of paths to 24 points. The question is can they do it?

We are now 3 matches into this.

They have only moved up to 14th place (big gap to 13th place), but are now only 8 points off the final playoff spot.

They have taken 7 of 9 points thus far.

this is some bigger news of the last few days:

Major League Soccer announced on Aug. 1 that it had opened an investigation into Arena and placed him on administrative leave following allegations that he made "insensitive and inappropriate remarks." Clearly with this resignation, it's possible that whatever that investigation turned up might be true?

Last night was the one Inter Miami game in the international break. Didn’t matter, they won 3-2.

Combined with a DC United draw, that means they are 6 points off the final playoff spot. They also have 1 or 2 games in hand on everyone.

There is no fucking way that Messi is traveling to La Paz, Bolivia and playing soccer at 12,000 feet above see level.

I said it elsewhere 2 weeks ago and I’ll say it here.

“If Messi goes to play in La Paz, he is going to miss MLS games.”

And since Bolivia 🇧🇴 is a small, poor country (unless they mine their lithium), there isn’t any financial pressure for him to go there. He is likely already back in Miami, which is about an 8 to 8 1/2 hour flight from Buenos Aires.

Messi likely flew home immediately following the Ecuador match (in Argentina) and skipping the Bolivia match was always part of the understanding between The 2 Lionels*

FRISCO, Texas (November 2, 2023) – FC Dallas midfielder Alan Velasco suffered a season-ending anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear in his left knee during FC Dallas’ Audi 2023 MLS Cup Playoffs first round match against the Seattle Sounders on Monday, October 30 at Lumen Field in Seattle.

Velasco will undergo surgery in the near future. An update on that procedure will be provided upon completion.

In 2023, Velasco topped Major League Soccer’s 22 Under 22 list Velasco featured in 28 MLS regular season matches, netting four goals and providing four assists. The midfielder received his first National team call-up with Argentina, scoring in a closed door friendly with the Argentina U23 squad against the Bolivia U23 national team on September 4, 2023.

FC Dallas hosts the Seattle Sounders on Saturday, November 4 at Toyota Stadium at 8PM CT in Game 2 of this Audi 2023 MLS Cup Playoffs best-of-three series (Tickets, MLS Season Pass, Talk Radio 1190AM, TUDN 1270AM.

Sporting KC knocks off 1 seed St Louis.   KC takes on the winner of Houston and Salt Lake.

Welp, I guess that that Best 2 out of 3 didn’t quite do what the league had intended. It didn’t even need to go to a 3rd game.

Kansas City dumping in the Missouri River and letting it flow on down to St. Louis.

Christ this playoff format is dumb. The first round is best of 3 and then all the other rounds are single game?!?!?

Also if they are going to do best of 3 (and they should just do 2 game aggregate), the higher seed should host games 2 and 3. Less travel and home field for the higher seed in every deciding game.

So dumb question amnesty here, but doesn't the ref have the ability to stop the play there and issue a drop ball to white to at least try to unfuck that situation without giving up the chance at the other end?

When you realize that perhaps Player On Referee Violence is justified.

Perhaps should even be encouraged.

New England just got completely screwed by VAR.

The defender is stepping over the Philadelphia  keeper on the ground when the keeper lifts up his left knee to “protect”(?) himself / trip the NE player. The New England player does a light stomp on the keeper’s chest as a “Fuck you for trying to trip me.” and the keeper acts like he has been shot or has multiple broken ribs. 🙄

The ref looks at the replay and comes back and gives a straight red card to the NE player…

…and does nothing to the keeper.

Absolutely should have been even punishments whether dueling Yellows or dueling Reds (should have been Yellows).

So now Philly basically has a pass to the next round.

Wait… I just turned it on to see the foul.

CORRECTION:

1) Was NOT the Philly keeper. It was a field player.
2) The Philly player reaching for the ball while rolling on the ground and lifting his knee up to trip the NE must have been part of a Diving Victim move on his part

Philly is a town of Bitches.

ESPN asked the question: Is MLS' new best-of-three playoff format working?

https://www.espn.com/soccer/story/_/id/38852791/is-mls-new-best-three-playoff-format-working

They said, sure, as much as can be expected, probably will change in a year or two.

They did note - the MLS is having to play around a few international breaks, one each in Sept, Oct and Nov, with November interrupting the playoffs. So the goal was finish the first round best of 3, international break, then play the rest of the playoffs afterwards.

When you figure in the 8-9 games, you are looking at potentially 4 games before the break - this is just silly.

What I do:

1. Eliminate the #9 team and just make the playoffs 1-8.

2. Every round is home and home aggregate

The format:

Round 1 (Conf QF) Last date in Oct, First date in November

Round 2 (Conf SF) Second and third dates in November

International Break

Round 3 (Conf Finals) Last 2 match dates in November

Championship game - neutral site hosted by an MLS team

FUCKING FINALLY!!! The Revs may finally get a dedicated stadium.

As you know, the Revs play in Gillette. It's way the fuck out in BFE.

Spoiler

That's 27 miles out from the Common in downtown!!

image.png.bbffb4fc0fd7a6a065931a49856aaf9e.png

The Kraft Group has wanted to move the stadium to closer in, but there wasn't much land available for it. The state cleared the way for it this week removing the offline Exelon Mystic Station and he land around it from the Designated Port Area along the Mystic River. That means after some work and cleanup, they can put the stadium there. It's significantly closer to the city.

We're still years from a new stadium, but this should get things moving quickly for breaking ground. Though I won't expect a new stadium for at least 3 years, so MAYBE 2027.

They going to incorporate the station into the stadium so that people can take the T to the games.

There is no T line over there so no.

The two closest stations are Assembly or Sullivan Square, both are across the river (along the Orange Line). There is a plan to build a walking bridge across from Assembly to the Wynn casino, that would link up the station there. That would shorten up the walk from there significantly.

And the stadium deal has stalled. Mostly just slowed down, it should still pass, but still a pain that it is slowed up for the time being.

There is a map outlining the location of the proposed stadium better.

Stalled? Remember the Big Dig? That is Boston at its finest!

Planning began in 1982; the construction work was carried out between 1991 and 2006; and the project concluded on December 31, 2007, when the partnership between the program manager and the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority ended.[1]

The Big Dig was the most expensive highway project in the United States, and was plagued by cost overruns, delays, leaks, design flaws, charges of poor execution and use of substandard materials, criminal charges and arrests, and the death of one motorist.[2] The project was originally scheduled to be completed in 1998[3] at an estimated cost of $2.8 billion (in 1982 dollars, US$7.4 billion adjusted for inflation as of 2020).[4] However, the project was completed in December 2007 at a cost of over $8.08 billion (in 1982 dollars, $21.5 billion adjusted for inflation, meaning a cost overrun of about 190%)[4] as of 2020

And it does t help that the matches aren’t broadcast on regular TV.

I have cut back on soccer-focused streaming. No Peacock, no Paramount+, never had ESPN+, nor did I have Apple TV+.

I used to watch FC Dallas up until they took them off of Ch. 21 in about September of 2022.

Now I occasionally see FS1’s Sunday evening game and that’s it. I watched the final, but I am one of the fans that has chosen not to dump money into soccer streaming and thus, the league has lost me.
