My Bariatric Surgery Journey

AG jeans/chinos has a cut called “Tellis” available for flat assed middle aged men. Also Tommy Bahama Boracay chinos and shorts. And the M7 cut from Ariat when boots are involved. For years I’ve been tempted to start a pants for flat asses thread. I have actually walked into the men’s department at Nordstrom and said “look at my ass. Fix me.”

Alternate thread title would be “The pancreas is a fickle bitch”

2 days of eating down and so far so good. I wouldn’t say that I get full in an uncomfortable way or anything but as you saw from the plates I’m not eating much either. But not hungry. It’s weird to have to make yourself eat when you aren’t hungry and then just randomly stop when you aren’t full. I don’t know if I’m doing it right but everyone is pretty insistent that I get in 100+grams of protein and to do that you have to eat obviously. Takes me 30 minutes to eat that small amount of food doing it the way they say. Small bite. Wait two minutes. Another small bite etc.

Tried to eat some sugar free 50 calorie pudding too quickly and it felt for the next hour like it might come up. That part is no joke.
so far have been a model patient and not trying to push the bounds of this thing or explore my new area at all. I imagine that will come in a couple months after I get used to what base line is supposed to be.
scale was 271.2 up again from yesterday. Not bitching just making a note of it and I appreciate all the people saying weigh weekly. That would be almost necessary if I hadn’t had this surgery and weighing affected what I ate that day. I’m this case it just doesn’t.

Just found this thread and wanted to shout my support and join in the share. I can relate to your struggle. Sounds like we had really similar childhoods. We're pretty close in age, I'm about four years younger. I was the "husky good athlete" growing up as well.  Have been super self concious about my weight since probably 4th or 5th grade?  Remember the "husky section" at department stores? I want to meet the child abusing sadist(s) who thought that was a good marketing idea. Hey assholes - NOBODY fell for that euphemism.

Stopped playing everything except basketball around 7th/8th grade, became less active, and January of my senior year of HS I had a primary care checkup and weighed in at 330 pounds at 6'3." Doctor prescribed me some appetite suppresants that didn't supress shit and told me to chew more gum.  I was also diagnosed with hypogonadism (literally low T, lol) which I'm guessing contributed to my weight gain?  My dad told me about someone at his work who lost weight on this diet called "Atkins"  so I tried this newfangled low carb thing and after two weeks I saw real results. I was also on testosterone therapy which I'm guessing helped with the weight melting off. I was losing like 5 pounds a week which made it easy to be super disciplined and militant about diet. Didn't even have a bite of cake on my birthday that March. My friends still joke about me eating salsa with a spoon at our favorite Tex Mex spot. It also helped being 18 - I could fill up on as much meat and dairy as I wanted, never counted calories, and still kept losing.

That summer before my freshman year of college I had no part time job and nothing but time, so I'd get on my mom's exercise bike for 30min every morning and watch "Win Ben Stein's Money,"  then hit the Y in the afternoon to do some weights and run on the indoor track (I still remember 13 laps =1 mile). The day I made it a mile straight without talking a walking break was a big milestone. Nine-ish months later, in September of my freshman year at UT, I was down to 230.  Lowest I ever got was like 190 which sounds insane now. I've been carb concious and pretty good about diet and exercise ever since, but I still have my struggles and the highest my weight has crept up is the 240's. I'm around that right now and trying to get back down to around 220.

Side note: in my early 20's I got off testosterone therapy and my levels returned to normal. Always been a chicken/egg mystery to me: with the weight gain/lowT/weight loss/normal T and what caused what.

Then why weight everyday or even weekly.  If you are doing what the doctor ordered and there is nothing else you can do - the weight will come off in the way it's designed to.  The scale can screw with your mental state when you see a plateau or slight gain.  Focus on how you feel and how your clothes fit as feedback instead of the scale.  @BearSchlongpost above is good advice.

Keep up the good job.  We're all pulling for you!

Thanks man. That's just how I'm wired- I have to know all the time unless knowing will screw something up.  In this case it's unscrewupable in the way I usually/used to do it. I know it's good advice.

270.2 today.   Not what I would have wanted to see last Thursday when I'd hit my previous low on this journey, but at least it's another week down and another low.

268.6. Breakthru!  Pretty happy about that.
it’s funny- my jeans are completely done and I have nothing that fits.
my decent shorts as well are done, nothing that fits.
so, today for example I’m going to take my son tonKarate and then go see John Wick 4 with him.
I get to choose between wearing slacks or wearing gym shorts.

Went to Walmart today and bought a pair of size 38 khaki shorts. Was it uncomfortable to get them on?
yes- that was the point as they will probably only be good for another month or 6 weeks tops. But felt good to not be in 40’s for first time in a decade. I think I should shop at Goodwill now that I think about it.

Had you bought size 38 cargo shorts, I bet they would have been much more comfortable.

268.2. A little progress from yesterday. Meal prepping for last week of soft food today after church today.
After this week I get turned over to real food and I can also get back to 1) exercise with body weight on stomach type stuff (sit ups, push ups) 2) golf and bowling 3) swimming or bath (I never take a bath but could now if I wanted to). I’m more or less released to be a real person other than alcohol. Dr says 3 months on that and even then very minor drinking and very occasionally. Don’t think I will ever really drink again beyond a couple times a year maybe, but that’s the only thing I think I’m restricted on still that I will eventually get back.

Made crab cakes today after church and my treadmill time (first of two On treadmill on the day. Pretty good. Cost 12 to make the. Arch of 5- each cake is 1 serving size. 22G of protein, 5g carbs and 147 calories. Will make the protein part of 4 meals for me. Grocery bill was like $50. That’s a bit helpful too.

267.8. Last couple days is rolling about how I’d expect it to go- 4/10’s of a pound a day. You do the math and you are like oh- that’s 3 pounds a week (more or less- that’s 67 pounds more in about 6 months from now- that’s going to take me down to 200 in about 8 months from starting my liquid diet. That’s seems like a reasonable amount of time to lose 100 pounds operating with a caloric diet of 2500-3500 pounds a day- depending upon if we are comparing to beginning of the journey or the end of the journey.

Steady improvement every day is awesome. My wife says almost everyone on her Facebook group complains of the 3rd or 4th week just stalling out the same way I did. Which is really weird.

weirdest part still though is I can’t drink water without getting sick. But if I put my Gatorade zero flavoring in there I can drink a 16.9 bottle in 15 minutes.

Someone in my wife’s Facebook group for Bariatrics died last night. He got the sleeve, his staples ruptured, his guts and the content of them spilled out into his body and he died.

The mortality rate on this thing is higher than Covid. We shut down the entire country to try to avoid that, while I took on a voluntary  procedure that brought about bigger risks. I knew that was the case, but it’s jarring to see it happen.  The danger always exists but it’s most acute during the first 30 days. I hit that milestone Thursday of this week.

looking forward to that.

I wonder if the deceased deviated from the plan? I’ve got a good friend who ended up in ICU for 6 weeks after the surgery as well.

It’s what I wondered too. His wife said he didn’t when she was amounting it to the group but who knows the truth. As her attorney (and I can’t imagine she doesn’t sue) I would advise her to say that for sure.
Did your friend deviate from the plan do you know? I’ve followed the plan to a T bc I can do anything for a week (what I can’t do is keep it up for a year without help which is what it takes non surgical- I’ve learned that about myself. I am, however, shocked at how few people follow the plan. She said that they are almost all self admitted cheaters.

And yeah I know it’s mot

all linear- but it’s working in a linear fashion at this  moment in time which makes me happy. 266.6.

The entirety of my drop off in miles, calories and steps from last week to this week was putting up a 3,000 step day on Friday.  I got super busy at work, didn't move, and then it rained and I had kid stuff and didn't get close. Previously my "bad days" when I didn't make my 10k steps were like 6 or 7- this was way worse than that.  I still got all my exercize in and my time with increased heartrate went up.  I'm working harder and doing some body weight stuff now that I'm more or less at my 30 days where they said I can go without restrictions.

If anyone has a 30 minute body weight routine for the week for me I'm all ears. Dr. said 30 minutes of walking/power walking/jogging plus 30 minutes of body weight strength training.  Then- in 3 months if I want I can lift real weights.

When your doc gives you the all clear I would highly recommend a good exercise bike.  Don't skimp, go for either a Peloton or NordicTrak whichever looks to be the best fit for you.  I went NordicTrak because I'm not into studio workouts at all and they have a good selection of scenic workouts where you follow the trainer.  I am also a big fan of the automatic incline feature that Peloton doesn't (or at least didn't) have.

There's a burpee thread around here somewhere, sir.

Does your house have stairs? Because you can crush your legs and heart rate simply by going up and down stairs 10-20 times. I used to have a 3 story townhome. Going up 10 times, and down walking backwards 10 times would get the heart rate going, and I was in good shape.

Air squats, push ups, leg lifts, sit ups. Do 10 of each, then 9 of each, 8 of each, etc. Time yourself. That's a good start. You might have to scale them differently depending on where you are. As in you might not be ready to do 50+ push ups right now.

No way I'm ready to do 50 man push ups right now. Maybe girl push ups.  I'd be surprised if I could get more than 5 push ups in at a time.  So do you do these together or all on different days or some combinations together and some not, or all of these every day?

If you have to do girl push-ups then do then from your knees. No one gives a shit.

Id do the cycle, period. It takes as long as it takes, that’s why I suggested timing it. Your body is going to struggle to recover some muscles, so you might be sore for 3 days after. If it takes 30 min, you’re fine for the week, if it’s 15, do it twice to meet the doc requirements. Do it in 5, do it every day.

you can adjust as you improve and your body responds accordingly. But it’s a good place to start and get a baseline. I would probably only pick one if leg lifts and sit-ups though, that’s the same muscle group.

268.6. Breakthru!  Pretty happy about that.
it’s funny- my jeans are completely done and I have nothing that fits.
my decent shorts as well are done, nothing that fits.
so, today for example I’m going to take my son tonKarate and then go see John Wick 4 with him.
I get to choose between wearing slacks or wearing gym shorts.

you broke thru the stall...congrats!  pretty soon we will be able to carve you up with a fork

It’s obvious you’re getting to some level of dietary ketosis. Have you noticed a metallic flavor in your saliva, or has your spouse made any comments about your breath?

I remember when I lost my weight I’d be laying in bed just admiring my hips. I know that’s oversharing but when the love handles melt away you notice things.

Not to make this a keto thread, but if you do ever feel blah you may want to consider adding some electrolytes. Once you get past the “OMG potassium” taste it’s not a bad idea to add some fake salt/nu salt to that Gatorade zero mix and maybe some magnesium maleate supplements. Washed down with pickle juice, of course.

Christ, man, anything with a 3 handle in jeans is ok!

I hate pickle juice. I thought Gatorade zero had electorlytes no?  No mention of my breath or metallic flavor in my saliva but she says I have a body odor that's akin to how the kids smell when they get sick and dehydrated.  I don't know how you can be dehydrated drinking 100+ OZ of Gatorade zero a day but here we are...

They don't fit. I can get them buttoned. There is a difference :)

But yeah, was pretty happy about that.

Hydration is not just water.  Those gatorade mixers do not have enough electrolytes to make a difference.  Bear is describing a keto drink that folks make combining sodium, potassium, and magnesium to help them get through the "keto flu."

Please talk to your physician.

267.0. Up from yesterday. I figured that was going to happen since I had gone down 1.5 pounds yesterday from the day before- always happens like that. Hope we don’t hang out here for another 8 days like last time though.
I took all my food for a week to the office yesterday (eat all my meals there except first breakfast- 5 meals a day).
this is my last week of soft food and almost all this stuff has protein powder scooped into it.

Per serving:

chickpea hummus - 150 calories 5g protein

deviled eggs- 270 cal and 12 g (serving size 3 1/2’s)

tuna- 140 cal- 20g

cottage cheese- 90 Cal- 13 G

refeied beans- 110 Cal, 9G

Spinach dip- 180 Cal- 7G

chicken salad- 140 cal- 17

mashed cauliflower- 70 cal, 7g

shredded chicken - 170 cal- 20g

that’s it- that’s all I’m eating (plus an over easy egg every morning) for the next 6 days (already eating that for Monday and Tuesday)  it all fits in a Kroger bag and the portion size on everything is about 1/2 a cup.

266.4. Just barely, but another low.
also- I can’t walk today. So, that’s going to be fun trying to get my 10k steps in. Or do my body weight shit. What do I have as I remember- 3 weeks of feeling this way after strength training?  2?  I don’t really remember bc I try to block that stuff out. Seems like more than a week and less than a month when you wake up wondering if your body parts are going to work.

Another 266.4.

Dizzyness persists. Wife ordered me electorlyte tablets and dietician said try that first, no need for concern right now.  Dizzyness with leg fatigue and soreness after starting strength training is a mofo.  My legs already want to collapse then dizzyness hits and it's hold on. I have to get up and stand in place by where I got up from for 10 or 15 seconds to make sure the world doesn't start spinning.  This thing is just the gift that keeps on giving.

Last night after we got naked wife said she could definitely tell a huge diffrence. I was like- is it much worse for you now that I've lost weight? Shockingly enough she said it wasn't much worse.  Who would have thought?  Weird.

Yeah- it seems like not a big deal googling it and all sorts of people have it after the surgery. My wife says I smell dehydrated all the time somI’m sure that’s it.
I’ve got electrolyte tablets on the way.
talked to my dietician she said more sugar perhaps but try the other stuff first and keep tabs we touch base in a month unless I’m passing out or something.

I'm not trying to diagnose, but if that's what it is the main thing is to be conscious of it, know you are going to be dizzy when you stand up and prepare for it. Slow and easy.

Yep. But like a dummy I keep forgetting about that because there’s a 5 second pause. It’s really a weird feeling.

266.4. Still sitting on that low but not breaking beneath. It’s not a linear journey every day.

3 more days until I can eat regular food not mashed or blender or thru the food processor.

Are you getting your A1C and blood sugar tested?

I’d be wary as fuck of any nutritionist that advised me to add sugar, but that’s because I’m virtually tinfoil hat conspiracy theorist level skeptical of the industry based on conversations my cardiologist and I have had regarding the AMA and the USDA.

I probably misunderstood her because I wasn’t really listening she was like- it could be because you’ve cut sugar out of your diet, blah blah blah. There was no takeaway for action item for me so I stopped really paying attention.

did strength training body weight stuff with the boy (10 yo) today. I was dying and he was laughing and having the time of his life. Fucker is strong. He knocked out 20 perfect mens push ups like it was nothing.

I had that dizziness thing when at maximum fitness form.  My doc told me not to worry about it (!).  I did hit the floor, once.  It passed, I’m sure yours will, too.

That seems to be the consensus. I’ve hit the floor 3 times in a month.  All controlled falls. Seems like something that ought to be a big deal but I guess not.

Okay, I know I'm starting to be a nag...but yes it is a big deal. If you fall and break a bone your exercise plans go to hell in the proverbial handbasket. There goes your diet plan for months while your bone heals. Nag. Nag. Nag.

I talked to my doc and my dietician and neither are concerned. I do need to be careful about standing still when I stand up. It’s literally only in the first 10 or 15 seconds.
