It will be weird to go on a cruise and not eat excessively, drink too much and smoke a pack a day while gambling.

It will be interesting to see if you are a better gambler without the booze and nicotine buzz.  Or do you just plan to avoid that whole scene?

Awesome work, keep it up.

Probably mostly avoid the whole scene.  Might gamble a little bit. Probably just whatever casino credit I have.

236.4. About to get on a cruise ship. I’ve never been on one of those when I didn’t gain 7-10 pounds. Will be interesting to see if I lose weight this time.
Other than RV, cruise ship is our thing. I’ve done lots of those trips and always had a great time. What’s more fun than eat in 5 times a day, smoking a pack of cigs, knocking down 16 drinks in a day and gambling until 3 in the morning?  Gluttony and alcohol and always lots of sex.
well, this is the one I’m worried about. Kids are coming with (3 of them and we are dong girls room and guys room so no sec probably), very limited space for food and doctors orders one drink on the trip and no cigarettes.  The mortgage market has pretty much destroyed my desire to gamble. So, here I am presented with something that was a huge part of my past life that I will not be able to participate in at all. Feels like it’s going to suck. Maybe not. We shall see.

Try to look at it this way, the eating, drinking, gambling, etc. are actually diversions to occupy long stretches of time used to travel large distances. What you see at these distances is the actual point of a cruise. Go to the ship's library and study about your destinations. You have the free time to do this since you dont "gotta go hit the tables". When you get to these destinations reinforce what you learned in the ship's library, go to the significant historical points rather than seeking out a bar or restaurant.  Study the ship. Take a tour of the engine room if that is offered. Take a tour of the bridge if offered.  Sit and watch the animals which are different from land animals. Watch a crew member and study his job. What does it take to operate a ship? Enjoy your steps with the fascinating view you will have as opposed to just "around the block". Smell the air. Use the stairs and go explore other areas of the ship. Check out the crew's quarters. Check out the posh upper floor. Walk slowly, you are "doing and activity" not just killing time.  Watch the crew when they dock the ship. At night go look at the stars which will be fantastic since you are away from most light pollution. You are in a different world. Study it. Enjoy it. Don't be in a rush. Slow down and really absorb your surroundings. Learn something. You have freed up much free time that in the past was used on the things you now avoid. Fill that new time with activities, don't let be a burden of temptation. Relax. You don't have to rush to the bar. Use the cruise for it's "real" purpose, not for the diversions offered.

You are one confident mofo to take a cruise while under your type of journey.  After this, won’t be no mountain high enough.

238.0 🙁

at lewst I’m down from my last official weigh in on Monday at what we that was/ but this is something like 10 days past my mark at 238.4. So, something like 1/2 a pound in 10 days. Not eating much and working a ton still. I know it will happen but the starts and stops are rough. I approach this scientifically as to what I’m eating and want it to be linear but it’s just not.
have to say I’ve been really busy with end of school stuff with kids, wife has been sick and it’s been hard… I was out last night walking with a flash light to get my steps in. Sunday I was on the road at 6:30 before church and it sucks to get up before daylight on a Sunday.
We are going on a cruise starting Saturday and I actually expect it to be easy on there, should have a chance to be pretty active. It will be weird to go on a cruise and not eat excessively, drink too much and smoke a pack a day while gambling.

Don’t let the slowdowns bug you.
When I did a 1,200 calorie/day diet in 1985-86 and lost 128 lbs (down to 175) in 9 months, there were at least a couple of plateaus along the way that lasted a week or two.

Father Time demanded that I quit drinking a few months ago and I’m in Europe for two weeks. Just don’t feel right not having wine or beer on a sidewalk cafe.

I just went to sea day brunch. Ordered the lobster Benedict for an extra $19.00. Got rid of the English muffin bottom and just ate the rest. It was delicious. Left 40% of it. Seemed so incredibly wasteful. Waiter was like was it ok?  Me: delicious. Then I had to explain the surgery to him so he wouldn’t be so sad.

One thing I think gets lost too often in America is the proof of threads and stories like this as to just how much, in general, Americans overeat versus how much fuel we actually need to sustain our bodies.

I am eating 5X a day though (most of the time). I know you are supposed to but it’s a PiTA. Some days I can only eat 3 times and end up with protein and mike in a blender 2X but yeah- when you can only eat about 250-300 calories at a time you gots to eat more often. But yeah- 2000 calories is both a lot and nothing depending upon what you are up to and mindset.
I couldn’t do this without surgery. I’d be in a constant state of feeling like I was starving to death.

Now you understand the struggle the rest of us fought.  You could have done without surgery.  You just didn't.

Now start giving props to the ones of us who did it the way you didn't.  Our struggle was harder than yours and that's fine.  Just admit that.

Why are you such a cunt? There’s just no reason for it. I know you’re proud of yourself for losing weight by why take your anger out on others?

I have him on ignore because he is such a massive cunt. If you wouldn’t mind not quoting him in this thread that would be awesome. He lost his 35 pounds and thinks it’s exactly the same as trying to lose150. Even though the numbers say it isn’t even close. Also, he thinks I’ve never made a serious effort or something before. Doesn’t realize I, like most fat people, have lost hundreds of pounds in my life. Just, like most fat people, have managed to gain those same hundreds plus an extra 10 or 20 back for all the reasons that @Sawbonzhas explained.

Also- he hates me because reasons and because I’m not the kind of guy super impressed with his boasting over being a coneseuir of high class whores or any of the other things that make him a garbage person. It’s a long thing that caused me to ignore him and I’m much happier since.

Bottom line- I’ve tried and tried and tried to make this work for me without surgery and I was like the 95% of morbidly obese people who couldn’t  lose weight fast enough to get to where they needed to be and couldn’t keep it off because my body felt, at all times, like it was in a constant state of starvation and because it hoarded fat and pounds because it thought our life depended on it.

Now, with my surgical intervention, which doesn’t count and makes me a pussy, I’m in the 50% of people who are going to lose 80% of their excess weight and have it stay off at the 5 year mark.

the surgery allowed me to work hard enough to make that happen in a way I could not ever have before. In that sense I’m extremely glad for it, even though in a lot of ways it’s a mixed bag that bums me out, and I 100% wish I didn’t have to have it. I suspect it will probably extend my life 20 years and make it more enjoyable on balance.

O, just finished the dumbest thing I’ve ever done on a boat. Started on floor 1 with one squat and 1 lunge and then walked the entire perimeter of the boat. Went up to floor two and did two squats and 2 lunges and walked the entire perimeter of boat. Went up to floor 3 and did 3 squats and 3 lunges and walked the perimeter of the boat. So on and so forth up to deck 11.
so- 66 squats, 66 lunges and 6520 steps. Right about 3.5 miles.
The boy did it with me running in a circle and jumping up and down the whole time. He likes doing stuff like that with me (he’s 10). That’s been sort of a fun thing about this.
he also pushes me.  I don’t want to shame myself too much in front of him.

Nope.  Been there, done that.  Dropped the weight 10 years ago.  It's all diet and exercise.  I look back and some of the pictures from that time period and I wish someone had told me I was fat.

These surgeries are even about diet.  They're cutting it in half.  Wulaw seems to be moving more now so that's good.  I really do hope it works for him.  But yeah, it's hard.  No shit.

These surgeries aren't without risk, either.  Guy I used to work with had one done and lost about 100lbs.  He openly admitted he ate way too much but I digress.  He's in the hospital right now because of a bowel obstruction, which is evidently common with these.  They had to fly him to a second hospital because his weight loss doctor had to be part of the surgery for some reason.  Said he's basically a patient for life.

We get it. You don’t approve. The fact of the matter is the guy knew there were risks, he chronicled them early in the thread. He felt this was the only way to get healthy. He did something about his issues. It’s working for him. What purpose do you serve showing up in his thread acting like a prick about it? You think you’re changing his mind? What exactly did you want to accomplish here? Because it sounded like you wanted him or someone else to tell you how much haaaaaaarder your journey to lose weight was…boo hoo. I lost 40 lbs in the last two years too, and I’m still fat. But it never occurred to me to show up on another guys thread and talk shit to him and make an ass out of myself.

My point in the post was that Wulaw seems to be realizing this is hard whereas he thought weight just fell off for everyone but him.

Yes, it's hard.  Not shit.  Congrats on your 40 that you lost.  That was hard, too.  It's also hard to keep it off.

I’m mostly in your camp on this, deal with it via diet and exercise. But if someone chooses a different path to fix an urgent need, no need to second guess them.  Do whatever works for your personal situation.

I've never bagged on his decision.  The problem I have with him is his insistence on how impossible it is for fat people to lose weight.  He's just simply wrong.  It's hard but not impossible.  He seems to be realizing now that this is a grind.  No shit.

I openly admit how hard it was for him.  He sure as motherfuck needs to admit how hard it was for "people like me."  If he weren't so sensitive about it, he'd realize people "like me" are here to help him.  We want him to succeed.

I hear you. Unfortunately he doesn’t as he apparently has you on ignore.

Listen I agree I’d never do that fucking surgery. I like working out and being the master of my domain re: my food intake. But people are different, so do whatever works to stop being fat. I’ve always assumed people that do the surgery want a kick start to get the heavy shit off quick then transition into a more exercise/diet friendly lifestyle. Who knows.

I haven’t gone over all the back and forth but your messaging was probably meant well but delivered poorly. Get in line with the rest of us assholes that do the same.

229.2.
I ate literally as much as I possibly could on the cruise to the point where a couple times I had to lay down for 15 or 20 minutes. It’s hard for me still  to do something like send back 7 OZ of perfectly cooked prime rib or send back 40% of my lobster Benedict- both of which I did- because I can’t eat any more. Ate as slowly as I could so I’d get that feedback. Had a couple nights where I drank mojitos with tap water instead of soda/club soda (wasn’t as good- but not terrible).
I might be a bit dehydrated so this might not be completely legit?
but on the other hand I worked hard on this deal. Didn’t take the elevators a single time (which wasn’t great being on the first floor). Had 573 exercise type level minutes the 7 days we were gone (that I know about). Was in the water a bunch so my steps are all messed up when I post them I am sure, but they happened every day but yesterday where I got off boat, took a nap, watched baseball and went back to sleep. But, I think I had 3 eggs and 3 pieces of bacon and that was it yesterday (we had no food at the house because of the travel.
will be interesting to see if I end up higher. I sort of don’t think it’s all bullshit though because my pants that were falling fine are now falling down.

My take away was 3 or 4 fold:

1). I would have preferred to do something else on vacation that doesn’t have so much eating, drinking, gambling and the like

2) we used to go and just not get off the boat- I now need to get off the boat in every port and do something

3) 7 days is now way too long.  When it was gluttonous/could enjoy the whole boat it was one thing, but when much of what they do no longer holds appeals all that much it’s something else  5 days would probably be just fine

4) damn, people drink a lot

5) wife still likes it so we will probably still go on one a year… but need to do that without kids so can also make it hang out and decompress time that would probably have improved it too

Ignore the very low step amounts- I didn't have it on at the water park, when swimming in the pools nor when scuba diving. Probably lost at least 20k steps. Note the heart rate/work rate for in the zone though- by far my highest ever.  Close to 75 minutes a day when factoring in some of that other stuff.

Considering where your wife is in the process (a couple of weeks behind you, I think?), was she able to enjoy the cruise?

Yep. She stayed on for another week. She did text me food and eating feel like a beatdown and she misses her shakes. She too is down 7 pounds. She doesn’t love food as much as I did/do so she doesn’t miss it like me. She loves drinking and has been doing that so she’s ok. It hasn’t had near the bad effect on her drinking as it was said to have. So she’s good.

Yeah, I get that.  We used to take cruises once a year for a few years.  I'd have to work out twice a day to not go stir-crazy.  Excursions definitely help, but like sitting on the beach, I can't just lie out all damn day drinking fruity drinks.  Bores me to no end.

228.0 today.  Obese still.  But, 0.4 pounds from now, when I weigh 227.6 pounds, I will no longer be obese but merely "overweight".  So, tomorrow I break below obesity for the first time in 18 years?  20 years?  22 years?  Something like that.  I used to live between 225-235 from the time I was 21-25 or so, but not sure which were which as far as those years went.  At any rate, it's been a long ass time.

Won't be celebrating with another 1/2 a piece of pizza, I know that.  Yikes- that sucked.  Bread is just awful. My wife forgot and had a 1/2 a piece of avocado toast and reported the same thing- I had hoped if I just ate 1/2 the bread layer and toppings I'd be ok, but nope.  My carbless tortillas if trimmed enough and I eat slowly enough to work to allow me to eat a fajita, but not an entire one. Maybe i need to find somewhere that does a cauliflower pizza crust and see if I like that taste.

It's frozen, but Costco has a cauli pizza that they sell that's pretty on par with a tombstone pizza, which I fucking loved in my youth and for while I still have a bit of nostalgia. I think MOD and Marco's have cauliflower crusts, but not sure. You could also just try a straight up crispy thin crust pizza.

I've got 4 more things I'm excited about happening on the scale on the way down:

222. 6 pounds away.  That marks 100 pounds from my fattest point this year.  That was my goal for the year on January 1. Looks like I will have this knocked out no later than EOM.  Always nice to check off a new years resolution 6 months early.

199.8  This will be the first time I'm at a weight that starts with a 1 since my sophomore year of college when I was 19 years old.  This will be awesome.  I would anticipate this happening by the beginni9ng of football season.  28.2 pounds away.  10 weeks? That would be August 18.  Anytime by September 1 and I'm pretty happy.

189.0  This will be the point in time that I am no longer overweight and am actually what the government deems a normal and healthy weight.  The last time I was there I was 18 years old, Christmas break of my freshman year at UT.  This should happen sometime around my 14th anniversary.  My wife married a fat teacher.  Now, she will be married to a normal sized dude hopefully making 3 or 5X that (depending upon markets). I wouldn't have done any of this if I didn't want to be healthy for her and the kids.  If it happens then I will have lost 100 pounds from 14 years ago. That's pretty cool.  How many people look much better than the day they got married 14 years later.

175.  This was my weight as a senior in high school. I felt fat then.  I sort of was for an athlete (if you consider golfer athlete) that was 17 years old.  If I hit that number again I promise I won't feel fat this time around.  Not sure that number will ever be seen again, but If it is call it 2/28/24, which would be anniversary of my surgery.  My sense is I have 1 year to get the weight off and the rest of my lifetime to keep it off. If I hit that 175 number at year 1 and then settled around at 190 for life I'd be pretty pleased with all that.

Congratulations to you, Wulaw. I'm a skinny man and I just checked my Fitbit and I've only walked 47,000 steps in the past week, so good on you.  I do have you beat in active zone minutes and resting heart rate, though. I sometimes wonder if my resting heart rate, which averages 57 bpm but gets down occasionally into the upper 40s, is an issue.

5 more days in and I'm up a full pound. The weather is miserable.  I haven't been hitting the road between that and being on a plane or in a car for about 5 of the last 9 days. Need to get to work inside as much as possible and get after it. So tantalizingly close last weekend and still not hitting the milestone is an irritation.

I hope I'm not down to a pound a week or something like that, have to get moving some more or probably will be, based upon losing weight and burning less calories just going through a normal day.

I'm pretty sure my caloric intake is still probably between 12-1500 calories. It's hard for me to do any more than that unless I drink them (milk with protein scoop-stuff like that).

  • 2 weeks later...

218.4. Feels like it's not exactly melting off of me and then I went and looked and I'm down 10 pounds in the last 30 days, so that's not bad at all. IF that pace continues then I will be in the 100's by opening day of football!

It's really not going well on the activity front- with it being hot as fuck out. I got moving a couple times over the last week at splashtown with the kids, and have splashed around in the pool but it's too damn hot out there to F with stuff outside.

I went and tried to look at gyms saturday but they were all closed (they have key fob type shit) in Huffman.  Who would have thought there's not a huge gym culture there. Will check out a couple places this week between my house and the office.  Goal is to join a gym and start lifting and doing cardio work when my kids get back to school on something like August 6th or 8th or somewhere in there.  Have a couple work trips and then a family vacation out to the river in July so not going to mess with it until that all wraps up and it's school time again.
