EXCLUSIVE
Texas spring practice takeaways: Tuesday

Isaiah Neyor (Will Gallagher/Inside Texas)
Austin, Texas – There was another media viewing window Tuesday morning for the Texas Longhorns spring practice.

Inside Texas was on hand for the viewing session for the fourth spring practice, and brings some takeaways from the twenty minutes practice window.

Hello Isaiah Neyor
Isaiah Neyor was running routes on air Tuesday morning. The 6-foot-3, 216-pounder was wearing big brace on his knee, as expected. He had the opportunity to test the knee on a corner route in which he stuck the foot in the ground and cut. Not much you can take from two or three routes on air, other than he right where he needs to be in terms of being on pace to be fully healthy for the 2023 season.

Maalik Murphy back in action
Redshirt freshman quarterback Maalik Murphy was back on the field, and more than watching frrom behind drills. Murphy took second team reps ahead of Arch Manning in drills, which included routes on air. Murphy displayed an overhauled arm action. He is much more compact than coming out of high school. He was late on a slant route, in which Steve Sarkisian let him know about it. Sarkisian said, “Get the ball out Maalik.” That’s to be expected when you have been watching, instead of taking live reps.

We shall see where the on field performance at the position goes, but it’s safe to say Texas hasn’t three quarterbacks take consecutive reps with this level arm talent in a long time, if ever.

Quinn Ewers and Manning continue to look smooth and accurate in drills. Ewers threw precise corner routes in our viewing window.

The offensive line
Here was the position rotation during drill work.

Left tackle:
Kelvin Banks
Payton Kirkland
Andre Cojoe

Left guard:
Hayden Conner
Neto Umeozulu
Max Merril

Center:
Jake Majors
Sawyer Goram-Welch
Max Merril

Right guard:
DJ Campbell
Malik Agbo
Connor Stroh

Right tackle:|
Christian Jones
Cameron Williams
Jaydon Chatman

*We did not see Cameron Williams take a rep at guard during the viewing window.

*Offensive line coach Kyle Flood was working technique very hard in tackle-guard combo drills this morning. Hat and hand placement were expected to be on point. Not surprising, Kelvin Banks received plenty of praise. Cameron Williams can still become more consistent in that regard. The learning curve for the freshman vs. experienced players truly shows up in the combo drills.

Notes
DeAndre Moore is a smooth route runner with arms extended plucking hands. Route running on air is very impressive with Moore. There is zero waster motion getting in and out of a cut. He’s running second team behind Jordan Whittington in the slot.

Johntay Cook II continues to get the second team reps behind Xavier Worthy at field receiver. Cook is quicker than fellow freshman Moore. But Moore is as smooth as any player on the field.

Jonathon Brooks took first team running back reps. He was followed by Jaydon Blue and Cedric Baxter Jr. Baxter looks smooth in drills. Light on the feet with some pop when he sticks his foot in the ground. No different than at Edgewater High. That is a theme with the early enrollees on offense.

Savion Red is fifth team in drills, but he has as quick of feet as any back. And he again received praise from Tashard Choice in drills

I could dig a Banks - Neto - Majors - Campbell - Jones starting 5

AS far as arm strength, I would think the Simms/Mock/Young trio was close at least.

Not even close. Ewers and Maalik have absolute cannons.  That said the best passing QB in modern Longhorn history was Colt and he had a sling shot for an arm. Arm strength is on of the more overrated things in football

Donovan Forbes had a fucking cannon but zero accuracy…

i mean, that's the thing... talking about arm "talent" here, not just strength. These guys have cannons that are also accurate.

It's just crazy.

We've gone from "Oh no, who do we replace David Ash with" to this.

Nice problem to have...

How many Polish David Ashes does it take to throw a football?

Take it for what it’s worth, but Juan Daviswas working behind walk-on Patrick Bayouthwhen the tight ends were going through drills with Jeff Banks. It could be something, it could be nothing, but it should reinforce the importance of Ja’Tavion Sanders to the offense as a whole. He might be the most indispensable member of the offense, including the quarterbacks.

Where is Gunnar Helm?

They have two returning starters at OT. I view this as more of a way to get the potential best five on the field. Williams is probably a backup tackle if either Banks or Jones gets hurt.

edit: yep, as I now see others have said as well.

it's amazing.

for the two years Kyle Flood has been at Texas his best 5 have included Jake Majors at center. for 25 straight games out of 25 games that the team played. Majors actually has started the last 27 games Texas has played going back to his freshman year.

people love to wishcast that he is some shit weak link who isn't good, has never been good and will never be good. but the guy paid $1.7 million with a long history of being a very good OL coach sure thinks he is good enough.

In general I’m with you but “weak link,” “is what he is,” and “best option at the position” aren’t necessarily mutually exclusive.

He wasn’t the weakest link last year though, even if he had some rough performances.

He is mediocre at best vs the run, so I get the frustration. Flood at least wanted to push him, evidenced by the move of Angilau to center last fall camp.  I just think people underestimate the demands at center. I would rank the OL positions LT #1 (just because it is so hard ot find a true LT) and center #2, in terms of importance. I know a retiered NFL guy that says center. You cant just slap a guy in there, its not like guard. He has to be intelligent and quick on his feet. Plus there is that whole snapping and blocking thing. (on a side note, that report on Cam seems questionable according to the reporting from IT).

Who else was he going to put there his first year here? Last year until Angilau got hurt he was working at the center position. Majors isn't that good but he has experience and that goes quite a ways for that position. He can 100% be upgraded from a skill and physical standpoint.

They trotted Angilou out there before at Center and did not get the results they were hoping for.. Hand tried it, Flood tried it.. Majors is the best we have currently and the most experienced.  If you want to help him get better push in the run game.. the OGs need an upgrade/improvement

This Angilau writeup by an Oregon guy is worth reading. It touches on a lot of other parts of the offense (scheme, coaching).

https://www.addictedtoquack.com/2023/3/22/23649443/quacking-the-roster-ol-transfer-junior-angilau

"But I think Flood had a lot of work to do in reversing poor development done for the previous three years by his predecessor, Herb Hand – within the film reviewer community there’s a list floating around of position coaches whom we can’t believe keep getting work, and his name is at the top."

It's beyond me how Ian Boyd gets paid to write about football when there's content like this out there for free

Maybe Ohio St, during Mensa’s last year.

2021 tOSU

Starter

C.J. Stroud

Class in 2021: RS Freshman
Measurables: 6-feet, 3-inches, 205-pounds
Hometown: Rancho Cucamonga, California

Backup

Kyle McCord

Class in 2021: Freshman
Measurables: 6-feet, 3-inches, 215-pounds
Hometown: Mt. Laurel, New Jersey

Where things stand

Stroud has been the projected starter since the season concluded last year. It’s even more locked in since Ryan Day named him the starter recently. And while there has not been a backup officially named, it sure feels and looks like Kyle McCord has taken on that role, with Jack Miller close behind. The question remains — when will five-star Quinn Ewers enter the fray?
