lulz at smoltz talking about early in his career and not knowing what to do with a ball that may have had a blemish on it and throwing them all away. Pitching in Houston against a guy known for that.

And declining to answer when benetti asked him if he remembered when that was so he could look it up on baseball reference

Umpire in the Venezuela v Nicaragua game is fucking horrible.

Guess who?

Also, time is an asshole. Nicaragua has a plan to throw off Miggy's timing with high fastballs. And he can't quite catch up to them. And they're all under 95.

I should have known it was that asshole.  I was kind of glancing at the game so couldn’t really tell who it was but the performance is indisputably Hernandez.

DR mercy rules Israel in a 10-0 one hitter shutout.  Venezuela is on to the next round, DR vs Puerto Rico tomorrow night for the other spot from the pool of death.  Tomorrow going to be fucking insane at loanDepot with two all-star teams and a World Series Game 7 atmosphere.

So, how does the Mexico/Canada game affect the US team?

It's complicated, but if USA wins they're in. With a loss there would be a 3-way tie with the loser of Canada/Mexico and Colombia. So if the USA loses to Colombia and Canada beats Mexico then I think the USA is eliminated because of an 0-2 record against Mexico and Colombia. In fact, Colombia wins that on the head-to-head tiebreaker because they beat Mexico.

So if the USA wins they're in. If they lose then they need Mexico to have beaten Canada or Colombia advances. At least the way I read the tiebreakers:

https://www.mlb.com/world-baseball-classic/2023-bracket-standings

Pool Play and Tie-Breaking Procedures:

First Round: In the First Round, the teams in each pool shall be ranked according to the percentages of games won in the First Round. The two teams with the highest such percentages in each pool shall advance to the Quarterfinal Round. If at the end of pool play in Round One of the Tournament, teams within a pool are tied with an identical winning percentage, the tie shall be broken in the following order of priority:

  • The team that won the games between the teams tied shall be given the higher position. If three or more teams are tied and one of those teams won its games against all other teams it is tied with, then it will be placed in the higher spot. Similarly, if one of those tied teams lost its games against all other teams it is tied with, then it will be placed in the lowest spot.
  • The tied teams shall be ranked in the standings according to the lowest quotient of fewest runs allowed divided by the number of defensive outs recorded in the games in that round between the teams tied.
  • The tied teams shall be ranked in the standings according to the lowest quotient of fewest earned runs allowed divided by the number of defensive outs recorded in the games in that round between the teams tied.
  • The tied teams shall be ranked in the standings according to the highest batting average in games in that round between the teams tied.
  • Standings shall be determined by the drawing of lots, conducted by WBCI.

Someone can check my math, but based on those rules it appears we must win or we go home even if Mexico wins - so the result of this game doesn't matter.

If Mexico beats Canada (and it appears they will) then the second tiebreaker would apply if we lose to Colombia which is the fewest number of runs divided by defensive outs. This is where us run-ruling Canada actually hurts us as even a 1-0 loss would result in a lower number for Colombia. Entering the game we actually have a lower number but it's so close that Colombia would be above us even if they win by only one run.

They couldn't make this more complicated. I read it as defensive runs allowed per out only against the three tied teams. right now US is at 1 run for 18 outs. (.056) Columbia is at 5 runs for 27 outs .185. Canada can't make up either in run differential. so they're out

It looks like if in a 9 inning game. Columbia would have to win by 3 runs....

Columbia 5 runs given up in 54 outs (18 innings) 9.26%

US 4 runs given up in 45 outs (15) innings 8.89%

but fuck if that math is remotely correct.

ah yeah that's correct on a re-read.

so we can advance with a loss but it can't be by more than 2 runs.

why couldn't they just do run differential and keep it simple?

Because if you mercy rule someone in seven innings that should count more than mercy ruling someone in eight or nine.

If there was no mercy rule than they probably would go with simple run differential.

Watching DR vs PR and was curious about MLB  representation among Latin American countries.

DR - 171

Venezuela - 106

Cuba - 33

Puerto Rico - 28

Mexico - 24

DR didn’t really surprise but Venezuela and Puerto Rico did

Astounded by the lack of Surly’s interest in this game. All star rosters that won’t care as much about a game until October in a double elimination game. Have the Astros and their supporters beaten the give-a-shit out of rest of y’all?

I've been watching. But it's probably a little hard to keep up with games being so early and so late to really get into it for some people
