Going to be in OKC in a couple weeks, stopping for a day and a half w/ the family on our drive home from Texas. Itinerary is shaping up but I'd love to hear thoughts/suggestions from people more familiar than me. We've got two young kids and will be traveling with our dog, so that has an impact on things.

Day 1

- arrive in OKC mid/late afternoon

- Scissortail Park so the dog can stretch her legs, kids can play on the playground

- happy hour/early dinner at Social Capital

 - hopefully put the kids to bed and grab a few pints at Prairie

Day 2

- Either Factory Obscura, an immersive art experience that looks fun for the kids

- Or First Americans Museum, which finally opened last year and is supposed to be fantastic

 - lunch at Riviere Modern Banh Mi

- Skydance Brewery, a Native-owned craft brewery that's supposed to be pretty good

- dinner at Ludivine

Day 3

 - breakfast at ?

 - head home

Holy crap. I live in Oklahoma City and I haven't done any of that stuff (aside from the park). Let us know how it goes.

As an aside, have you read "Boomtown" by Sam Anderson? It's a sprawling history of Oklahoma City threaded around the James Harden / Thunder saga and it's absolutely incredible. Some of the best nonficition writing I've ever read and extremely engaging.

My inlaws live in NW OKC and we almost never go downtown. It's so far away it might as well be Frisco. OKC is way too big, everyone drives 45 minutes or more to get wherever they are going. I hate going there. The new stuff along Kilpatrick Turnpike is fine. Not my favorite, but at least Roughtail is up there now.

Neighborhood Jam is a great breakfast spot.  Waffle Champion is good and close to the others you have mentioned. Ludivine is great.  Gray Sweater is another option.  The chef there just got a James Beard nomination, I think.  The OKC Dodgers are in town and the ballpark is really nice and close.  Skydance is great. Prairie is great. Like the other guy said, Stone Cloud is great. Bombing Memorial is right there and incredible but not for the little kids.  Sidecar is a cool cocktail bar by Skydance and Prairie that makes good craft cocktails.  Jimmy B's on Broadway is in an old Mercedes dealership that has a great happy hour and cocktail/beer menu.  The First Americans Museum is really cool.

Boomtown is a great read.

Yeah, I mainly just go downtown for Thunder basketball and the Bricktown Comedy Club. They pull in pretty solid acts. Margaret Cho, Kevin Nealon, Dave Attell, etc. Great addition to that area.

The National Memorial by itself without the museum is very moving. If you’re downtown it should not be missed. The place is full of kids.

Sorry. Totally agree. Was thinking the museum. The National Memorial is stunning. They did a wonderful job on it.

@'stache I'm heading to Tulsa Thursday to pick up some patio furniture and play golf. I need a burger rec for the US 66, I-44 area. I'm pulling a trailer so I don't want to go downtown unless you insist. Playing Cherokee Hills after lunch.

Arnolds Hamburgers in West Tulsa would be my first choice. It's a slight detour onto I-244, easy to get back to I-44.

My 2nd/3rd choice would be Webers and Claudes. They are about a mile north of I-44 on Peoria. They are right across the street from each other and are both really good. Webers gets a slight nod if you like rootbeer.

4th choice would be Fat Guys Burger Bar's new location near 41st and Sheridan (not the downtown location). It's new and can't speak if its as good as downtown but it should have a lot of options like the original location.

Thanks. I'm sure we can make one of those work.

Goldie’s Patio Grill at 61st and Sheridan is not too far off your route.  Big parking lot with plenty of room for a trailer too.

Goldie’s is a small chain that’s been in Tulsa for years.  Unfortunately, several stores closed during pandemic but this one is still top notch.

These are all great choices. I have a nostalgic affinity for Webers, eating inside, a 1/2 pound chili burger, the homemade onion rings, and a couple big frosty mugs of their root beer. I would weigh 500 pounds if I lived next door. Really like Arnold’s too.

so i read through this thread and most of the posts are about bars and restaurants.  i've never had any desire whatsoever to step one foot in oklahoma but have recently heard about the bob dylan museum, the woody guthrie museum,  and leon russell's studio.  plus, antiques roadshow filmed a couple of episodes at the fillbrook, and it looks worthwhile.  might even squeeze in the gilcrease if i have time.  then there's the black wall street stuff and some route 66 kitsch.   i'm thinking 3 full days, but maybe 2 depending on vacation time.  the restaurant/bar tips are helpful, but anybody been to any of these places?  how much time do you think i'll need there?

Gilcrease is closed currently being entirely rebuilt. Go to Greenwood Rising though, it's pretty impressive what they've done with that new facility. Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie Center, Church Studio, and Philbrook are all great places. I'm not as obsessed with Route 66 as many around here, but if it's on your list, check out Buck Addams kitchy shop and our Space Cowboy muffler man. There's even an AirBNB right behind it. Also, my tastes are impeccable, so my bar and restaurant recommendations are above somewhere I'm sure.

Necrobump, will be in Tulsa/Bartlesville all next week working the ConocoPhillips/P66 United way golf tournament.

Is there anything decent in Bartlesville? Any new places in Tulsa that warrant a visit?

Haven’t been there since the summer of ‘95 when I started working for Williams just before the move to the Transco tower in Houston.

From a friend from Tulsa.  She has excellent taste:

"For Italian, prossimo.  Cajun I would say Nola's or Bourbon Street.  For steakhouse, bull in the alley, but my favorite is still mahogany's.  Some people like Prhyme steakhouse, The Hemingway is a new steakhouse downtown, and on top of the building they have a cool bar with a great view of Tulsa it's called Roof sixty-six Rooftop bar. For Mexican La Turtelia."

Good luck.

I'd say for Italian, Villa Ravenna. Nola's >>>> Bourbon Street. Agree with the rest.

Injun casino.  Two historic hotels - Hotel Phillips and Inn at Price Tower.  You can go give the Pioneer Woman some money in Pawhuska.

Sadly, the Price Tower is closed, the owners started selling off the historic furnishings.  Fucking vultures.

Frank and Lola's was pretty good when I went, and Murphy's Steak House is always a throwback to a past that doesn't exist anymore.  Get the Hot Hamburger, gravy over all, and the salad with house dressing.

Some good stuff above.  I’ve been so neck deep in high school kids activies the past year, we haven’t gotten downtown T-town that much.  Here’s some other places/notes:

  • Skip Cafe Ole - new owners and I’ve heard from multiple people that it has gone downhill at a high rate.  I haven’t been myself since change but I trust the people you’ve been since the change.
  • Isla’s Kitchen - downtown across the street from the ballpark on Archer is outstanding.  Best new place I’ve been in the last year - https://www.islaskitchenok.com
  • Fixin’s Soul Kitchen — also downtown on north Detroit is supposedly fantastic.  I haven’t made it there yet but I’ve heard nothing but great things - https://fixinssoulkitchen.com
  • La Tertulia is still outstanding.  I’ve had great meals on all my visits, service was a little poor once but food was still top notch - https://www.latertuliarestaurant.com
  • Heirloom Rustic Ales - best beers in town and probably most Austin-like place I’ve been in Tulsa - https://www.heirloomrusticales.com

I’ve got very little for Bartlesville aside from aforementioned Frank and Lola’s.  Close by downtown bar called Painted Horse was pretty cool - https://www.painted-horse.com

Don't know shit about Bartlesville. I haven't been but Barron's in downtown opened recently and got a rare 5 star review from the Tulsa World. Mexican I'd suggest TXMZ (Tacos Y Mezcal) at 18th and Boston or 918 Maples by the Church Studio (weird name but owned by very nice Mexican family). Maple Ridge Grocer and Bishop Quigleys are two new neighborhood joints also near 18th and Boston right by my kid's school. Hemingway's is indeed super fancy but Bull in the Alley is still the best steak in town, imo at that price point. Lofi is a new pizza joint, small and loud (spinning music is the theme), pizza is awesome and its the best old fashioned in town (same owners and recipe from Hodges Bend which sadly burned down last year). Bohemia Pizza downtown is a favorite. Always a fan of Nola's and my favorite is still their original Kilkenny's. That's all I really got, I don't eat out as much as I used to, and when I do I go to the same places. Elgin Park, Marshall, and Solera are my most frequent stops.

Sad to hear that about Cafe Ole.  Loved having dinner at Cafe Ole and then crossing the street to the bar on Utica with the big outdoor deck.  The name of that place escapes me.

P.S. - My friend in Tulsa informs me that the name of that bar was the Blue Rose.  Many good times were had there.  RIP

Thanks for all the recommendations, y’all.

Anybody know anyone in software procurement at ConocoPhillips and P66 that likes whiskey?

Since I’m on a roll.

Seriously, they raise $1mm a year for the United Way at a golf tournament at some muni goat track in Bartlesville, which is why I’m there all week as a supporting sponsor.

The rooftop bar in the building with Hemingway’s is Sidecar on Cherry Street, Roof 66 is downtown in the Indigo hotel.

I forgot to mention SOMA at the Brut Hotel at 18th and Boulder/Riverside, highly, highly recommend. Good food and drinks and the best rooftop in town with views of downtown and the Arkansas River, which now looks like an actual river and not a sand bed. The low water dams are finally in place and makes a massive difference in the views and overall feel of the city.

My cousin sent me a snap showing a bunch of the recent construction at the Gathering Space being complete.  Looked great.  That's one of my favorite parks anywhere.

If you're playing, don't hit it left on 4.  My dad likes to lay down in his backyard and pretend he got conked.

I don't know what the answer is for eating in OKC, but I do know that it isn't Barrios Fine Mexican Dishes. The rice was so undercooked that it was crunchy and the waiter and the manager training the waiter both had no idea what an agua fresca was when my wife asked if they had any. The First Americans Museum was cool though.

I honestly didn't even know Conoco Phillips still had people in Bartlesville. I doubt they'll have anyone there much longer to be honest.

When I used to fly to Tulsa weekly, about a quarter of the plane was Accenture staff going to Bartlesville for the week.  My impression was that they couldn't get the staff they needed in Bartlesville so they'd been outsourcing it to Accenture for years.  I guess they just kept some business there for political reasons.

I remember this headline from last year, I sort of assumed it was a broader layoff. I have done my damndest to stay as far away from the O&G industry in my lawyerin' work as possible, I just have no interest in that line of work.
