Sorry for bringing anything ketch related, it got RTed by some other Texas account I follow. Does anyone know the story behind Brent Venables torching his relationship at Mater Dei?

OU processed out the two Harrises in the last few days.   OU has a roster crunch and apparently weren't going to be able to sign all the players they had committed so Venables decided to process out a couple of Mater Dei kids.  Doesn't seem ideal.

How does this make sense? How do you have a roster crunch, in this day and age? You know guys are going to portal out.

And why would they process WRs? Aren’t they short on them? Isn’t Nic Anderson in the portal?

Sounds like to me someone wasn't worried about the numbers.......and should have been.

One of the funniest things I’ve observed in the last two weeks is the serious ineptitude of Venables.

They panicked and thought they might sign too many guys, so they trapdoored two recruits just ahead of signing day.

Now, per their own boards, they’ve already lost 5 guys to the portal that they didn’t have in their math.

Whoops.

Venables has been living off of the Bama victory fumes for the last couple of weeks…..reality has kicked in for him.

Arnold remarkably still has cache with the national podcaster regards. Ari, Andy, and Pete Nakos spent about a half hour defending him today. They couldn’t speak to a single aspect of Arnold’s game that they liked. Just kept repeating 5 star talent, bad OL, and MASH unit WR Room.

This is what not watching games looks like. Their suggested landing spots for Arnold: Georgia (yes really), Michigan, and USC.

From this list, who did they want to keep?

I’d say Hatchett for sure given what they had to spend in NIL to get him to leave UW.

Maybe Vickers too? He’s was a sophomore with some starts and he played a lot as freshman.

I believe Pettaway got passed by a walk on.

I think they want to keep Bauer Sharp, too. He was their #1 receiver this year. But it's not just "who do they want to keep?"  It's also "who can they get as replacements that would be better than the players they're losing?"  I have no idea if Joshua Bates is any good, but I do know that the player they might not be able to get a player as good as he is to replace him.

Hatchett, Walker, Anderson and Arnold were starters. They weren’t going to pay to keep Arnold but the other three hurt in some ways.

While their WR/TE situation sucked, they didn’t want Sharp to leave. There are shittier guys on the roster besides the starting TE and leading WR.

Vickers wasn’t some huge blow, but he played and guys behind him are still on the roster.

The only real loss on that list is maybe Hatchet, but he wasn’t healthy most of the gear so you really can’t tell. He blew his bicep out pretty early in the season. Anderson was great when he was healthy, but that wasn’t very often. True story, my son Tackled McCarty his senior year in the playoffs and blew his knee out. My son felt horrible, wasn't a dirty play or anything like that just football. He hasn’t been healthy since that day.

Arnold, Anderson, Sharp even though he can’t block my dead grandmother coming off the edge.

Just so we're clear, you guys are cool cool cool with losing Walker, a young starter at CB, and Vickers? Lots of faith in Jai Valai to really work and develop those other guys, I guess, huh?

I feel like we can replace theses stats pretty easy. He’s not a scrub by any means, and I prefer he not leave. But he’s not a total loss. IMG_4005.thumb.jpeg.365f7f9ed201b75bdc1ab8419ff9d730.jpeg

I’m definitely not losing sleep over a combined total of 19 tackles, 1 interception, and 6 pass breakups.

The reality is, your coaching staff thought he was better than the rest of your options. Maybe you guys kill it in the portal, I don't know, but that's a perilous path in terms of baseline dependency given that many other schools are in the same boat. If someone enters the portal who is a true stud, it's not like that bidding war won't be insane and you guys might not be armed to win it.

Well two less teams will be in the same boat we are when they take those two guys. Chess, not checkers!

Kani lost his job to Eli Bowen and I don’t see him getting it back. You have a point, but this doesn’t sting as much as you’d like it to.

Green from last year still stings like you’d like it to.

This is awesome. They discuss the portal and…

-how much they need offensive talent, and how difficult it is to get it interested in the 2025 Oklahoma Sooners. (They have no receivers)

-how much more difficult it is to retain offensive talent than they expected (budgeted for)

-they believe they have a $14M budget, and how that should be competitive

-how they hate where the sport is, and how they wish there was a salary cap.

I love this.

In the mid ‘70s, as Royal was complaining about OU and others buying players, against the rules, Switzer was mocking him. He would say, “Texas just has a bunch of lazy, old coaches that just don’t want to work at recruiting. He would do better if he worked instead of pointed fingers.”

To OU, now, I would say, “Maybe you guys should stop complaining about how the game is, now, and just work harder”.😂

Switzer sitting back in his lazy chair from the 70s complaining about where the sport has gone. Fucking moron.

It just gets better and better. Their coping involves a debate over how and when limits will be placed on NIL (the “why” is - something must be done about this! It must!)

Oklahoma is one of the most conservative states in these United States. These Okies are crying for college athletes to collectively bargain with the NCAA. They want a salary cap and revenue sharing.

A salary cap won't change a single fucking thing. There already is going to be one, in the form of 20 million from AD funds that go to play players across all sports, at the discretion of the AD, of course with Title IX considerations. I don't t think the OU AD can spare the 20 million from operations, but technically the cap is the cap.

Nothing fucking changes until they find a way to regulate private, 3rd party endorsements, and that's such an ass-kicking impossibility waiting to happen I don't think anyone even wants to bother trying to take it to the courts for another pride-obliterating bitch-slap. Removing 3rd party endorsement opportunities is basically overturning NIL. Good fucking luck. Want to try and regulate collectives...good fucking luck. But even if they did, we'll figure out another way around this fucking nonsense.

What I love about is, what they really desire is for rules to come in and regulate their competition, who will obey the rules, so that they can get bagmen out again buying recruits for a fourth of what they get in this NIL era.

Yup. The only want regulations because they're willing to skirt them.
