OU Recruiting 2025: Truck Balls and Broken Dreams

From OU's On3 site

According to SoonerScoop.com sources, there could be other staff departures coming soon. On both sides of the ball.

The name to watch on the defensive side of the ball is Jay Valai. Oklahoma’s cornerbacks coach since 2022, Valai could be a candidate elsewhere for a defensive coordinator position. On the offensive side of the ball, it should surprise no one if tight ends coach Joe Jon Finley and running backs coach DeMarco Murray moved on from Norman.

The two OU football alums could be looking for opportunities elsewhere. Finley could be a candidate for OC jobs at the Group of Five level. Or he could jump to another tight end job elsewhere. And according to sources, that would likely be a mutual departing.

As for Murray, he will likely get calls from the NFL when the NFL regular season concludes. A jump to the league would not be surprising. He has garnered interest from several organizations in recent years, including the Las Vegas Raiders. Many inside the program expected Murray to be back in 2025 with the Sooners. And that still could hold true, but it feels as though anything is on the table for Murray right now.

With all of these potential departures from the coaching staff, don’t be surprised if any new players jump in the portal. Linebacker Lewis Carter unexpectedly got in the portal on Sunday. OU staff members, such as Brandon Hall, Todd Bates and Miguel Chavis, have been trying to hold this ship together since Alley’s departure. And on offense, the charge has mostly been led by new offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle.

Alley’s departure, and the potential for other departures, raise serious questions about the stability inside the Switzer Center and the overall operations and structure of the program. Under Alley, the future was bright on the defensive side of the ball.

At the time of his hiring, it was thought Venables would be able to step away from his unofficial role as head coach/defensive coordinator. That he would let Alley take over the reins of the defense. In turn, Venables would be able to focus more on the details of being a head coach. But the failures of the offense and the hiring of Seth Littrell overshadowed everything in 2024.

Now, Venables has to stabilize the program. Which is beginning to look like a more difficult task than anyone previously thought.

LOL. The Raiders are about to can Pierce, but Murray is a candidate for their RB Coach position on an unknown staff? How the fuck does that work SoonerScoop?!

This has been theory aside from general cock gobbling.

Vegetables was one of if not the most famous sign stealer before Stalions , not a surprise his stickt would take a major step back not having his ace in his pocket

An interesting data point that sticks out like a sore thumb is the Alabama game. While it’s harder now with helmet communications it does make you wonder.

Seriously, how do Sooners continue to spin any of this in any kind of positive light? What we’re seeing is a roster exodus and staff shakeup of epic proportions.

Looch thinks the sooner spin is embarrassing

I can't think I've ever seen a walk out of these proportions. I guess the good thing is that the Sooners can promise immediate playing time to anybody who signs up.

This is all terrible news and if true I’ll have a big sad. But I really trust Venables to go out and hire the best replacements, real charismatic teachers of the game. I’m sure no one with a successful career trajectory would send Skeletor’s calls to VM.

Brent Venables is actually executing the Bob Stoops Program Plan, and not doing horrible at it, but the framework of college football has changed. OU always recruited players with potential and then put them in a crucible to turn them into elite players. That worked when there were high barriers to player movement.

Now, there aren’t barriers to movement, plus there are now large overt enticements to change teams. The Stoops Method doesn’t work. As Dan Lanning said, your most important recruits each year are your current roster.

It’s too late for Venables to adjust. The OU AD screwed up in giving him a real extension last year (instead of the fake extension where the term is lengthened but the buyout doesn’t go up), after sufficient evidence was already in that Venables couldn’t retain his roster.

Say what now?

Listen, if players don’t want to eat their own vomit as a means of showing they’re truly in it for the program, Coach Venables and Coach Schmidt didn’t need those motherfuckers anyway.

BOOMER!!!

I don’t know enough to comment, but this is from a Sooner post:

Lots of questions surrounding Oklahoma's NIL efforts and wanted to expose what's going on behind the scenes of OU's Collectives

July 1, 2021, NIL is Born
Since the day NIL was passed, OU has been behind every other Blue Blood program. After the birth of NIL, 3 collectives rose: 1Oklahoma, Crimson and Cream, and strengthening Oklahoma. At this time, universities could not vocally support a NIL collective as the university and collective had to be separate but many schools toed the line of compliance.

1Oklahoma was a nonprofit collective backed by Switzer that never took off due to a lack of university support and funding. Strengthening Oklahoma was created by Gabe Ikard and Dusty Dvoracek, solely for football and fell flat because they know nothing about sports marketing. Lastly, Crimson and Cream was driven by Conman Jason Belzer, with whom Joe C fell in love.

Belzer founded SANIL, a national NIL agency that created and managed collectives for mid-major and small D1 schools with their biggest school being OU. Belzer has no ties to OU and no vested interest in the university other than lining his pockets, which he did with your NIL contributions. Crimson and Cream was not even an LLC, rather the money was going to an unmarked account in Georgia that Belzer owned.

December 8, 2022, Crimson & Cream becomes official
Strengthening Oklahoma merged into Crimson and Cream and received full support from Joe C and the athletic department. They created a fan-driven, subscription-based model that fans could subscribe to monthly for stickers and behind-the-scenes content of athletes. Many collectives had proven this model ineffective, but it was a get-money-fast strategy and many fans bought into it.

Many fans did not know that 15% of every dollar would go straight to Belzer's pockets, netting him millions of dollars from your donations. Crimson and Cream had some local businessmen run the day-to-day operations as their 2nd jobs but these people had no previous sports marketing or NIL experience. There were many internal issues with Crimson and Cream ranging from lack of leadership, a conman running the collective, and players not getting paid what they were promised when they were promised. This model proved unsuccessful and Belzer left Crimson and Cream leaving them with a ****** model and little support.

June 24, 2024, Current Era of OU NIL
After Belzer ditched Crimson and Cream, OU then bought out 1Oklahoma and rebranded Crimson and Cream into the new 1Oklahoma Collective, hiring the Dubs Group, an all-female sports marketing agency in Norman, to run its day-to-day operations. The NIL work that the Dubs Group had done before being acquired is laughable especially given who was running it but OU needed someone quick and that’s who Joe C chose. That made Jeff Weber, former OU alum and father to Dubs Group founder the new CEO of 1Oklahoma.

Jeff has no previous experience in sports marketing, NIL, or quite frankly anything to have him at the helm of a blue-blood collective. Everyone I’ve talked to inside the athletic department can't stand the guy and know he’s leading a sinking ship. The mismanagement of NIL by the collectives at OU is no surprise when you know who’s running things. Why would you give to a collective when you don’t know who is running it? You shouldn’t. It’s your responsibility as a fan to ask the hard questions about who you’re giving money to, who is managing the deals and why can’t they get their **** together.

We are so far behind every other Power 4 school when it comes to a collective but at least the broads running it put out cute videos and goofy social posts! Don’t let Gabe Ikard or Captain 405 blow smoke up your @SSabout the state of OU NIL. This ultimately falls on Joe C for not being proactive at the beginning of NIL and OU refusing to step over the grey line of what's compliant or not to succeed in the new era of college football. Do your research before you give another dime to 1Oklahoma because with who’s in charge, OU NIL is not getting better anytime soon.

Say Murray leaves...would Texas have any interest in Tatum or does he suck too much? I have no idea on his ceiling.  If he can't get carries, then he can fuck off. See what he can do in case Baxter needs more time, and Blue is gone, add another RB like Tatum to go with Wisner until Gibson stops fumbling. If Gibson can get that under control and unseat Tatum, then bye.

I don’t know enough to comment, but this is from a Sooner post:

I will say, since the theme of the post is that Sooners shouldn’t contribute to their collective until big program changes are made, and they missed the chance to make such changes for another ten months, I support the message.

(Also, it sure isn’t a shock to hear about Switzer involved in a grift)

I just want to point out how difficult it is to build a sustainable successful nil organization. This story reiterates that. Please think about that the next time you are watching a Longhorn game, perusing recruiting lists, or attending a game. What the Texas NIL guys have accomplished this far is phenomenal. It’s very difficult to run a nil organization lean and in compliance. These guys have done it.
