Interesting. I assume RT and staff will be evaluating him to see if he may be able to contribute in Austin

Really surprised Bates did not enter the transfer portal...

Emoni Bates entering NBA draft after pair of college seasons

Quote

Emoni Bates is entering the NBA draft, banking on teams being intrigued with his potential as a scorer after seeing flashes of his talent in two seasons of college basketball.

Bates made the announcement Monday on social media.

"What I been dreaming for my whole life," he posted on Instagram.

The 6-foot-10 wing averaged 19.2 points and 5.8 rebounds in 30 games at Eastern Michigan last season, making 40.5% of his shots overall and 33% of 3-point attempts.

"I'm excited for Emoni and his future," Eagles coach Stan Heath told The Associated Press. "He is a talented young player who works extremely hard and is passionate to be successful."

Bates is the No. 56 prospect in ESPN's draft rankings.

After graduating from high school in three years and being regarded as a basketball prodigy, Bates went to Memphis for one season and averaged 9.7 points in 18 games during an injury-shortened season. He transferred to play for Eastern Michigan in his hometown of Ypsilanti.

"I know he will continue to improve and mature as he continues the journey," Heath said. "There is no question his best basketball is ahead, and I support him on his decision."

Bates will spend the next couple of months working out for NBA teams and answering their questions about his life on and off the court.

In September, he was charged with two felonies -- carrying a concealed weapon and "altering ID marks" -- after a traffic stop and was suspended by Eastern Michigan as a student and basketball player. His attorney said the vehicle and the gun didn't belong to Bates.

Bates was sentenced in December to 18 months of probation after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor gun charge, a conviction that will be expunged from his record if he completes probation successfully. He was reinstated to the school and to the basketball team in October after prosecutors agreed to drop felony charges against him.

Bates bounced back as a basketball player and at times during his sophomore season showed some of the skills that made him the first sophomore high school basketball player to win the Gatorade national player of the year award and landed him on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

He scored 29 straight points for Eastern Michigan in the first half of a loss last season at Toledo, where he finished with career highs in points (43) and 3-pointers (9) after making 15 of 23 shots.

In 2019 as a high school freshman, the slender and skilled guard led Ypsilanti Lincoln to a state title and was named Michigan's Division 1 Player of the Year by The Associated Press. His sophomore season was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic, and he attended Ypsi Prep Academy as a junior, his final year of high school.

Bates initially committed to play for Tom Izzo at Michigan State. He later decommitted and signed with Memphis and coach Penny Hardaway.

He's fucked.  Go try to make a living in Europe.  What a total mess of the last few years.

ASU guard Austin Nunez committed to Beard. Not a surprise, he had a Texas offer at one time from Shaka but not sure Beard re-offered but he did evaluate him. From San Antonio

Yep.  It chews up coaches who won in other leagues.  Adapt or die.

Skeptical, but if true what a huge waste of money.

What gives out first, Dickinson’s attitude or Self’s heart?

Arterio Morris and Hunter Dickinson to Kansas

Frustrated Dragons Den GIF by CBC

I actually think Morris will do well in Lawrence and I hate seeing him go there, but I did lulz a little at the ESPN recap of their roster not mentioning him at all

With Dickinson in the fold, Kansas vaults into the preseason No. 1 and national championship conversations. The Jayhawks return Dajuan Harris, one of the nation's best point guards, and fellow starter K.J. Adams from last season's Big 12 championship team while adding a top-10 recruiting class and Towson transfer Nick Timberlake, one of the best shooters in the portal.

Kansas also remains in the mix for top-10 recruit Mackenzie Mgbako, who recently decommitted from Duke.

Just here to say that the Tansfer Portal player rankings are pretty trash, especially On3.  They are not nearly as accurate as the high school rankings.  It is amazing how many really solid players get missed altogether, and who they chose to put in the top-10.

A few examples from On3 for last year:

  • Keyontae Jonhson - K-State - Ranked #37 - Was previously 1st team SEC and had started 50+ games. Ended up 3rd Team All-American
  • Kendric Davis - Memphis - Ranked #94 - Was AAC PoY / 4-time All AAC. Ended up on final Wooden Award list averaging 22 ppg.
  • Tristen Newton - UConn - Unranked - NCAA All-Tourney Team, National Champion
  • Baylor Scheierman - Creighton - Unranked - Ended up on the NCAA All-Region team
  • Norchad Omier - Miami - Unranked - 3rd team All-ACC, key Final Four member
  • Tyree Appleby - Wake Forest - Unranked - Ended up 1st team All-ACC
  • Sir'Jabari Rice - Texas - Unranked - Big 12 6MoY, key Elite Eight member

Meanwhile, they had these gems in their top 5:

  • #2 Bryan Antoine - Senior from Villanova who had started zero games in 3 years and averaged 2.3 points in his best year.  Did nothing.
  • #3 Samuel Williamson - Senior from Louisville averaging 5.6 points, 3.7 rebounds and started only 6 games as a junior.  Did nothing.
  • #4 Khristial Lander - Junior from Indiana averaged 2.9 points and had never started.  Did nothing.

I could go on and on.

It shouldn't be that hard to rank these guys. If a player is a multi-year starter and is 1st team in their conference, ANY conference, odds are he is going to be a stud.  If a player is a Soph and was very highly recruited (like top-25) and wasn't getting a lot of minutes on a more experienced team, they are likely to be good (but not AS likely).  If a player makes an all-Freshman team in a major conference, they are likely to be very good.

Rice had started 74 games at NM STate and was 94-26 in games played and was 1st team All-WAC.  He should have been a top-50 transfer.

This year's rankings for On3 look much more reasonable however...

  • #1 - Hunter Dickenson - 3x 2nd team All-Big 10, 89 starts
  • #2 - Max Abmas - 2x Summit PoY, NCAA All-Region Team, 123 starts
  • #3 - Caleb Love - NCAA All-Region Team, 96 starts
  • #4 - Harrison Ingram - PAC 12 RoY, 62 starts.... but pretty meh last year, very low efficiency
  • #5 - Aaron Estrada - 1st team All-CAA, 77 starts
  • #6 - Grant Nelson - 1st team All Summit, All Defense, 56 starts
  • #7 - JJ Starling - ACC All-Freshman
  • #8 - Kel'el Ware - 4 starts at Oregon, meh Freshman year, former 5-star
  • #9 - Jameer Nelson - 1st team All-CAA, 97 starts
  • #10 - Taran Armstrong - 2nd team All-WAC, 58 starts

Love, Ingram and Ware shouldn't be anywhere near the top 10.

Love is a volume based scorer who doesn't play defense. Guy shot 37.8% from the field last year and under 30% from 3.

Texas has made contact with Rodman Jr. (WSU) and Sellers (Ball State). Rodman 6'6" (rebounds with the same understanding of his dad) was 38% BTA, Sellers was 42%. Terry continues to pursue guys that shoot the basketball.

Htownhorn has been Htownhorning hard lately. Rodman was 4th in his own team in defensive rebounding percentage, and he would’ve been 5th on our team this year in total rebound and defensive rebounding percentage and tied Brock Cunningham, who‘s also 6’6, so he isn’t even close to his dad when it comes to rebounding.
