Pretty much.

It was a much bigger deal that the top ten religious denominations in the US, including Southern Baptists, openly and very publicly came out against the policy, and most used Scripture to denounce it.

Very true.

Does anyone really think conservatives will understand the reference to Thomas More and Richard Rich? No because that would require literacy.

Not sure if Will intended this but today is More's feast day by the way.

None of that matters, either.

Tribal politics are more important than religion and anything else.

For some of the olds, this might have some resonance. My dad has been a Republican as long as I can remember, and he used to revere everything George Will said. If he came on the boob-tube back in the 80s, my dad would shush anyone in the room. He's unfortunately been brainwashed by Fox News, so I'm not sure how he'll react nowadays or even if he'll know. It all depends on whether Hannity covers it.

You don’t have to convince Cletus.  You just have to convince old school Republicans who voted “against Hillary” but who are disgusted with Trump.

I think George Will liked the republican party when it was all about country clubs and manners and class and tact.  Now its filled with people he doesn't like or respect.  He likes being famous so he's moved to hang out with those folks.  Hell, he was on bill Maher last week.

This is 100% why it doesn't matter. There is no one who is on the fence now about Trump who is reachable by George Will.

My older brother used to revere George Will back in the 80's. But then he just followed along with the Republicans' shift to the right and by the time Dubya was in office George Will might as well have been a socialist as far as he was concerned. No chance this would reach him.

I don’t think anyone is “disgusted” with Trump. Some people don’t like him but he’s doing a pretty good job as POTUS, settling the NK question and all.

Not sure if serious.

I am disgusted by dickhead Dolan and have nothing but contempt for his treasonous ass. asset never before has any person occupied the oval office had anything but the country's best interests at heart. Until now, that record stood, even if the plans didn't culminate into anything meaningful, the men holding office still did what they believed best for the country. This assclown has only his own interests mind and doesn't give a single fuck of they ever intersect with the interests of the country.

He did?

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/06/22/us/politics/north-korea-national-emergency-trump-nuclear.html

Quote

The gulf between President Trump’s rhetoric and a thorny geopolitical reality widened a bit further on Friday, when the White House said it would extend a decade-old executive order declaring a national emergency over the nuclear threat from North Korea.

The announcement came days after Mr. Trump declared to the world that “everybody can now feel much safer” after his meeting with the North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un: “There is no longer a Nuclear Threat from North Korea,” Mr. Trump said on Twitter.

Apparently, there still is.

“The existence and risk of proliferation of weapons-usable fissile material on the Korean Peninsula and the actions and policies of the government of North Korea continue to pose an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security, foreign policy and economy of the United States,” read the notice, delivered through the press secretary on Friday.

The national emergency regarding North Korea has been in place since 2008, spanning three presidencies. Now it is a measure that will effectively help keep in place what Mr. Trump has referred to as “maximum pressure” on North Korea and Mr. Kim, who has said he will take steps to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula but has not begun to dismantle his arsenal of nuclear weapons. Analysts who study the country say it would be premature to declare that progress on denuclearization until that happens.

I’m as R as they come. Trump has created a lot of wealth for me. I’m disgusted with him.

Trump hasn’t created shit.

His policies have. Do you have a 401k?  What has happened to your income taxes?  Do you own a significant amount of stock in a company that is up 40% since his election, partially attributable to him?

My 401k hasn’t done any better this year than it has historically.  My income taxes will drop by a lot, but I’m not bought off that cheap.  Nor am I under any illusion that a tax reduction created any wealth that isn’t offset by the increased national debt and risk of inflation.

And more importantly, Trump never gives anything that he does not intend to take away.  The man is a sociopath.  He’s the Jimmy Burke of politicians.  Yeah, you’ll get your share...  Don’t fall for the scam.

Kinda this.  I like George Will because he's an old school Republican and if they still existed, I might be one.

However, to your point, a lot of what is going on now is class conflict and not so much policy conflict.  I dare you to mention Trump support in a room where upscale whites mingle.  I might be palatable in part of Texas or the South in general but it sure as shit isn't in the rest of the country.  Trump is the embodiment of working class white cultural aggrievement and people like George Will don't like it that the commoners have now overrun the country club.

Obama managed a recovery despite his efforts to thwart it.  Regardless, I thrived during Obama years, but my taxes were higher.

Trump came in with a business friendly reputation and the markets instantly reacted after a confusing election night.  We issued a bunch of growth stock just subsequent to the election, knowing we were about to enter this environment, and put it to work.  We have been rewarded.  And my taxes were noticeably lower this year.

But I suspect we are about to enter a recession, and there's not much he will be able to do to avoid it.  I hate his comments about OPEC, because he doesn't know what the hell he's talking about.  Regardless of the good he apparently had a hand in, I detest everything about him, and won't vote again in '20 if he's GOP nominee.

You may disagree with me, but they're actually congruous statements.  I'm of the mind that if an economy is in decline or recovering in its normal course, there's not much a President can do about it, even if he/she is totally aligned with the Fed Chairman, particularly in both scenarios where QE has been maxed out.

Yeah, it's a good thing he didn't start a trade war and pump a bunch of money we didn't need into the economy and started inflation.

Not sure what Obama did to actively thwart the growth of the economy.  He stabilized the free fall we were in and the saved the banks and GM.  Saving the banks on the auto industry by themselves were huge.  Had they collapsed, THAT would have been ruinous.

Wrong. His approval rating among Republicans is 90%. Fox News and Breitbart are busy deifying him daily. It's North Korea level shit and his followers reflect that religious adherence.

You do realize how much money we pumped into the economy during his 8 years, don’t you?  I agree about the banks, but that was done by Bush and Paulsen. He saw it through, though, and would have done what Bush did (any sane POTUS on either side would have).

I have no opinion on the auto industry’s saving except that Michigan is dead.

I disagree with those poll numbers. Not you necessarily. I don’t know any person who likes anything about Trump, and 90%+ of the people I associate with are Republicans.

Anecdotal, sure, but he’s universally panned in the national media. Admittedly, my Fox News watching days are over.

In our social circles, it's mostly olds. Travel to a rural area and it's mostly everyone. I was recently in rural Western Pennsylvania for a few days. Most of them adore Trump and it's all ages.

I hope you're right. I've seen plenty of anecdotal support for it. I've got a diehard Fox watching, Hannity listening, Breitbart reading Trumpkin in my family. It's kind of amazing and horrifying to watch. Every time we've tried to discuss, they respond with only emotion. It's impossible to discuss, so we mostly don't.

I've also seen lots of anecdotal support for Trump in rural upstate NY and rural Western PA recently.

I've seen a lot of Fox/Breitbart and heard a fair bit of Hannity as a result of my family member. They are spitting fear based lies and brainwashing with Trump ego/accomplishment fluffing 24/7. It's laughably obvious. It's also apparently very effective.

While I totally agree with George Will’s sentiment, who exactly is that going to persuade?  Is there anyone left in the GOP base that satisfies the conditions of A) being capable of understanding the essay of an intellectual conservative and B) not a fucking sociopath?
