Texas Basketball 2023-24

Yeah, I believe Baylor was Terry's first college job out of the high school ranks. He was the head coach for some small town high school in Texas and then took them to state. I dont remember where exactly. Richard Johnson Jr (Tre's Dad) only played at Baylor for 1 or 2 years though, so I'm not sure how big his father's alma mater aspect may play in Tre's recruitment.

Texas basketball continues busy month on recruiting trail

Hank South

Texas basketball recruiting has been active over the last month. The Longhorns staff landed five-star combo guard Cam Scott in August and have started welcoming official visitors on campus the last two weekends, with more to come.

Here’s a look at the main prospects of note at the moment.

Tre Johnson, 5-star SG, Brandon (Mo.) Link Academy (originally from Lake Highlands)

Johnson officially visited Austin for the second time the weekend before last, spending quality time with Rodney Terry, the coaching staff, Dillon Mitchell and even some of the football team. The Longhorns are part of Johnson’s top six, the 247Sports Crystal Ball currently trending towards Baylor. He has more official visits upcoming to Alabama and Waco.

Curtis Givens III, 4-star PG, Monteverde (Fla.) Monteverde Academy

One of Texas’ two official visitors this past weekend, Givens is considering a handful of programs like the Longhorns, Georgia Tech, Indiana, and LSU, among others. Sources tell Horns247 the visit was a success and there’s positive vibes in regards to UT’s chances at the moment. This weekend Givens will be in Bloomington where the Hoosiers will try to work their magic.

Josiah Moseley, 3-star PF, Round Rock (Texas) Stony Point

Joining Givens this past weekend on the Forty Acres was Moseley, and just like his fellow official visitor, there’s optimism that Texas is trending in the right direction here with a strong showing throughout the local standout’s stay. Texas has proximity and familiarity in its favor, up against Georgia Tech, Illinois, Villanova, and USC.

Asa Newell, 5-star PF, Monteverde (Fla.) Monteverde Academy

The football star power will be in Tuscaloosa this weekend, but the basketball star power will be home, as the five-star forward makes his highly anticipated official visit to Austin. Texas is taking on Auburn, Georgia, Gonzaga, and Indiana, among others for the 6-foot-9, 205-pounder.

Liam McNeeley, 5-star SF, Monteverde (Fla.) Monteverde Academy

Monteverde Mania as another top target resides at the Florida powerhouse. McNeeley will return to Austin for a second official visit later this month, with programs like Indiana and Kansas presenting the chief competition.

Robert Miller, 4-star PF, Pasadena (Texas) Pasadena Memorial

The in-state forward will officially visit Texas at the end of September. He’s considering Alabama, LSU, Colorado and the Longhorns. A decision is likely to come after the OV slate, with the Longhorns getting the last crack at it.

Nicolas Codie, 4-star PF, Carrollton (Texas) Newman Smith

Codie trimmed his list to seven in late July, with the Longhorns making the cut. "They made it known that I am their priority,” he told 247Sports’ Brandon Jenkins. “Coach Rodney Terry always sends me texts. We are always texting back and forth. We have a really good relationship. They went pretty far last year. It is a really good program and they send people to the draft. Dillon Mitchell will probably go to the draft next year and they will need someone to fill his role. I feel I would be a good fit for them because I fit their scheme. It is a big thing to have an offer from there and who would not want to go there?” Codie is expected on campus in Austin for the Wyoming game weekend on an official visit. Others in play include TCU, Virginia Tech, LSU, Houston, Miami, and Auburn.

Aiden Sherrell, 4-star C, Napa (Calif.) Prolific Prep

Sherrell pushed back his commitment date last month with Texas becoming more involved. Alabama was considered the favorite prior to the delay. He doesn’t plan to visit Austin this fall, at least not at the moment. He says he feels he knows everything he needs to know about Texas via his communication with the staff. No new commitment timetable is known.

Cooper Flagg, 5-star PF, Monteverde (Fla.) Monteverde Academy

The No. 1 player in the country recently reclassified to 2024. As things look now, it doesn’t appear Flagg will end up in Austin when all is said and done, but the Longhorns have been and will continue to recruit him. Duke is trending on the 247Sports Crystal Ball.

Few points away from the Final Four hardly qualifies as Dark Horse.  Don't get me wrong, I was sweating our roster overhaul between transfers, eligibility/graduation, and the Draft.  But Terry & staff rebuilt brilliantly.  We're certainly flush with new faces, but plenty of talent and enough returning firepower...I wouldn't call us a Dark Horse.  I mean, I don't see this as a Final Four team as soundly as I did last season, we've got some unknowns.  But yeah, "Dark Horse" is like, "Despite their 2nd round elimination and losing four players to the draft, look for the Longhorns to make some noise in a vulnerably weak league this season and go deep into the Big Dance."

You're right, he just dipped into the copywriters database for 4 cliche category names and one happened to be "Dark Horse" so he put that one "last."  And that's fine, we've got a lot of work to do with our new guy cohesion and a tough league again, but we're not exactly "sneaking up" on anybody.  Especially since we have 5-6 games in the regular/conf. tourney season with his short list of teams.  I think somebody may be onto the fact that we play basketball here at UT-Austin.

Well, the real season doesn't start until November 19th when we go to MSG for that two day event. If we need Disu before that then we have much bigger issues.

Texas only plays 1 tough opponent the first month of the season.

Incarnate Word

Delaware State

Rice

Louisville (neutral court)

UCONN or Indiana (neutral court)

Wyoming

Texas State

If Texas can't go 6-1 during that stretch without Disu, they have much bigger problems. Not saying Disu will miss that many games of course.

While UCONN has some serious size, Marquette isn't that brute inside.  And that's assuming UCONN beats IU.  But yeah, all in all, we're not facing too many brutal inside-out opponents before Big XII season.  I know it's early to pontificate, but 11-2 in non-conf. is the baseline expectation.  That's not pie-in-the-sky Aggie logic of "Oh, we'll get revenge on this team and tough it out versus this team."  No, it's on the road losses to UCONN and/or Marquette are acceptable, if not expected.  Those are fantastic teams this season.  And one's got a big size advantage over us.  And maybe we steal one, certainly not out of the question given our better shooting roster this year.  But this is not a "win one we shouldn't, lose one we shouldn't."  There isn't a team on our non-conf. slate, and that includes Louisville and LSU, that should be within 15 points of us.  Period.  Full stop.  11-2 bare minimum.  Anything less is abject failure given this slate.  12-1 is certainly a possibility.  Disu is a big question mark in the difference between 10-3 and 12-1, but not the whole picture.  11-2 Longhorns, 11-2.  And then the fun begins.

I don’t remember Beard taking a lot of heat on that from UT fans at the time.

Nope. You're right. Everyone ignored it at the time.

I'm just saying that in retrospect we know that it was an abuser going easy on a fellow abuser

I think he got some heat but nobody wanted to fire him. Hell some wanted to keep him after the fiancée incident.

Yep. Derka and some others were all chirping at the start of the offseason that losing Morris was a sign that RT sucked and last year was a fluke

Instead we will have the players who replaced him on the court as opposed to in the courtroom

As THE BIGGEST FAN EVER OF TEXAS BASKETBALL AND SOMEONE WHO LOVES RT I can see the writing on the wall. Too bad you guys are suckers falling for RTs nice guy act (did I mention that I love RT?!?!?!?)

Please let sleeping dogs lie.  Dude hasn't posted in here in months, and you are doing all you can to pull him out of his slumber.  If you need more schadenfreude in your life maybe spend more time on the aggie screenshot thread in the recruiting forum.  There's no need to constantly antagonize one of our own, especially when he hasn't been actively doing anything to deserve it.

Also, while I love positive R.T. news as much as anyone, he has coached zero games since being hired as the head coach.  Maybe let's let him coach some actual games with his team before celebrating his tenure here.  Don't spike the ball before you get across the goal line.

The guy has been gone from the board for a few months and you still talk about him.

Move on with your life, no one fucking cares what you think about him.

We tend to be on the same side of this argument, and you are making my point for me.  No need to crow about R.T. yet, same as there is no need to treat him as a presumed failure.  I'm cautiously optimistic, but that's how I roll about most things.
