Beautiful fight.

I think Bivol got hard done a bit.  The 116-112 card was ridiculous.  Beterbiev landed most of his work on Bivol's gloves.  I was leaning more towards 115-113 Bivol or a draw.

Yea I thought it was strange scoring. Obviously I wasn’t paying as close attention as normal, I was watching the buttfucking happening in Dallas also. I thought Bivol was really good and wouldn’t have had issue with a draw. I hope we get another fight between them.

Right there with ya, man.  I had the game up on one screen and the fight up on my second screen.  Kept one eyeball glued to each.

The JABBR AI stats kind of played out exactly how I thought the fight went.  Beterbiev was busier, but missing and landing ineffective shots, while Bivol was landing the better, cleaner work.  I really think Bivol fucked himself by taking Round 11 off.  Beterbiev wasn't slowing down and Bivol's output dropped in the last three rounds and that's a bad look.  Was Beterbiev actually breaking Bivol down?  Nah.  But perception is reality.

And having that war criminal Khadyrov jumping in the ring, hugging Beterbiev, while it was clear Beterbiev's team got the scores early was just a terrible look.  This is a guy who has had fighters that fell out with him murdered.  Why the fuck is he anywhere near this fight?  I thought the Saudis were supposed to be sports washing their image.  This is the exact opposite of that.

So the Mike Tyson v Jake Paul fight is going to happen, next Friday, I guess.

And I think I have read that it is on Netflix, so if you have Netflix it is right there. No pay-per-view.

I don’t even know what to think will happen? Like Mikes not gonna die right? And Jakes not either? Seems like either could happen.

I think I read that the delay for this fight was because Tyson had a pretty serious ulcer. Hopefully he knocks Paul in the head.

Oops, upside your head, oops upside your head.

Whoa I just checked, didn't know Tyson was +200 for the fight

I guess being almost 60 years old, kind of hard to make you the favorite.

Yeah. Tyson was washed up 20 years ago. Assuming this isn't a fictional contest, the chances he can chase down a 27 year old for an extended period of time are slim to none.

Chase down is right, Jake is going to side step and shuffle all night.  I hope Mike can find a magic stamina bean to eat.

I've been so annoyed at the thought of a 60-year old man pretending to be in fighting shape for the past few months that I haven't even considered, what if Jake Paul lands a big right hand, the type that's knocked out more than a few men in their 30s. The type that stopped Mike Perry. This is a 60 year old man we're talking about. This is probably Top 5 dumbest choices Mike Tyson has ever made in his life. Took me a second to configure the rankings because there's some dumb shit in there that we know of.

My money is on it being as fixed as they can get away with though. Another disappointing hugfest like Tyson/Jones.

I have thoughts.

1) Jake Paul isn’t good. But (and I know this isn’t a popular take) he’s not terrible. He’s strong, thick, has enough natural athleticism, and he’s worked hard enough to acquire basic professional boxing skills on the level of a regional journeyman 40 years ago.  He has below average feet and above average speed and power. If he really brings it in the ring he’s the kind of guy who gave Buster Douglas trouble. He’s good enough to hang with a better boxer who doesn’t come in fully committed.

2) Mike Tyson was spectacular and wonderful to watch, but his success came from a unique combination. First, he was physically unusual- a powerlifting build and supernatural core strength and balance combined with middleweight speed and movement. Secondly,  at his brief peak he essentially treating boxing as a monastic vocation to the exclusion of everything. Third, he only had elite ring skills but was fighting in a style that was archaic and strange even in the mid-80’s. Other professionals couldn’t really spar anyone like him because nobody else did or trained to do what he did.  Buster Douglas beat him  by retreating to first principles for a bigger boxer: distance enforced by a long, hard jab, forcing the smaller man to burn energy to work around it and keep their guard up. At that point, Tyson had left the monastery and as we all know had lots of distractions. His stamina was never exceptional, and it failed him, and he got knocked out. And after that night the old Tyson never came back. He didn’t even really box in the same style anymore. He became much more conventional. The Tyson who went on to beat Tillman and Alex Stewart and maybe Razor Ruddock (twice) was a top level pro, and maybe he could have found himself for the originally scheduled Holyfield fight, but we all know what happened next and after that, the dragon was dead after that, even if the boxer who remained was still a dangerous draw.

3) This isn’t just a fight between a 27 year old and a 58 year old. And it’s also not a fight between a dancing bear and a crafty old champion. It’s a fight between a dangerous puncher coming into his physical prime and a guy who hasn’t really been the MIKE TYSON of our imagination since he the Bruno fight in 1989.

This ridiculous promotion is based on a certain suspension of disbelief. Not just that an old man can beat a young one (and maybe he can), but that there was a boxer named Mike Tyson who was a historically great champion, and that’s not the case. There was a boxing phenom named Mike Tyson who could have been like Rocky Marciano, but he had a spectacular rise and dramatic fall, and came back to eke out a living as a celebrity contender in a division far weaker than the one he dominated years earlier.

Strength and is the last thing to go and assuming the fight is on the level (a huge if) I’ll give Mike Tyson a puncher’s chance for old times sake and I hope he wins.  But none of the elements that made him what he was are with him anymore, and I just don’t see it.

Actually he won’t. That’s not his way, and his actual way is what’s going to get him over tonight.

There’s a reason that when you watch those impressive-looking videos of Tyson working out, there’s a lot you don’t see. You do see a guy looking very good for a few seconds at a time, but it’s always against a trainer wearing a belt pad and mitts. You don’t see him doing cardio and you don’t see him sparring. There’s a reason for that. There’s also a reason that you see vids of his team going nuts over him executing the most mundane moves like slipping out of a corner.

And I take no glee in saying that. I’m one of the biggest Mike Tyson fans there ever was. But I’m also a realist. For this fight to seem competitive will require an outrageous carrying effort by Jake. Otherwise this will end quickly.

Could Tyson catch Jake with a hard, square right hand that puts him down? Yes. If there’s one weakness about Jake Paul that you can say that makes him vulnerable to Mike Tyson, it’s that he’s very sloppy and that sloppiness could potentially leave him open. But as others have said, I’m not seeing it and that’s Mike’s sole path to a win: a first/second round shot heard ‘round the world.

That’s exactly right.
as much as people remember his ferocity, Tyson was and is a highly scientific student of boxing, and sees his game the way Tony Gwynn and Steve Nash saw theirs.  Jake Paul will show Tyson a lot of openings and he *will* see them. That said, I’m not sure how much good the vision does him because he probably isn’t fast enough to take advantage, and his age is going to limit his effectiveness pretty severely after the first 2-3 rounds.

So I haven't seriously followed boxing in quite some time, for lots of obvious reasons, but my gut instinct is there is no way this match isn't somewhat scripted.

Depends on what goes down. If it goes 5 rounds or more? Yeah. Likely a work, especially if Tyson ends up winning in that scenario. Over in the first two? Total shoot regardless of who wins.

That’s an interesting point. On the one hand, the value of Jake Paul as a promotional property goes ballistic if he beats Tyson. On the other hand Paul is the favorite right now at -200.

Agreed and that's what us fans are really banking on. Tyson getting that clean shot to the body, with that devastating upper cut that just knocks Paul the fuck out.

=I want to see this for many reasons, but also because I like seeing that "old-dad-strength" being on display against someone like Jake. I mean Jake was looking straight at him in the faceoff and never saw Tyson's slap coming. I feel like that was real and he's not ready for someone like Tyson, even at 58, which is why he's not fighting anyone with a significant rank.

Paul isn't terrible, though, and is getting good coaching. Have to recognize that he's somewhat legit.

But here's my take. There will be desire for this to last a few rounds with both boxers getting shots in to make it a good show. The good part is that I don't think Mike is capable of following a script. I know what he said about legacy, but that doesn't mean he's willing to let himself lose this match against someone he certainly doesn't feel will ever be on his level. Paul can also live through any of the possible outcomes. Win/Lose, he has multiple stories he can go with and continue to prosper off it. There is no losing scenario for Paul...unless Mike literally kills him. Mike comes away with the win here and they hug afterwards.

He is legit enough for a novelty fight in the worst division at the weakest point in the history of a dying sport.

btw- for those of you looking for a quick knockout by Tyson: they are wearing 14oz gloves, and the rounds are only 2 minutes.

These are celebrity boxing rules. I’d be surprised if anything more than feelings get hurt.

Tyson bites Paul's nose off and is disqualified.

Paul makes the mistake of bringing the gift pigeon he planned to give to Tyson in case he won, to show it off.

The pigeon escapes in the chaos.

We watch in shock as we see that Tyson also brought his pet falcon, which eats the pigeon.

And the rematch is set for October 2025 on Halloween. Paul wins in a KO round 2.

A year or so after that, Tyson and Paul become business partners on a line of avian related sports drinks called "Pigeon Punch!"

Rob McElhenney sues them.

To me, this is Mike Tyson's best fight. A knockout of the great Pinklon Thomas in 6. For the record, this fight was a great example of the smart money getting it wrong because ALL the real boxing guys, myself included thought that Pink was too big, too strong, and just too good a boxer for Tyson to cut down to size.

Do not skip to the 6th round. This is Tyson's masterpiece, and the areas where he struggles in this fight have a lot to do with why he never fought Tim Witherspoon and why his team ducked Holyfield until it was impossible not to.

Also Angelo Dundee's meltdown at the doctor after the 1st round is pretty great.

I'll never forget the summer of '88.  It was the only time I did some summer school to play a little catchup to get out in 4 years.  Got like 30 people to each kick in $5 for the Spinx/Tyson fight and a keg.  I got 2 beers before I sat down so I wouldn't have to get up for a bit.  Sat down, and I think I got one or 2 sips in and the fight was over.  I immediately yelled "no refunds!".  We got drunk anyway.

I was down at Elon in NC visiting the German when he was playing soccer there, I think Pitt was at Duke or something, or I went down just for soccer, and the Fury v Wilder #3 was also that weekend.

The soccer boys were getting ready for a party and I asked one of the roomies if we were getting the fight before starting the party. They were college kids, albeit at a pretty wealthy school, so I said I wanted to watch the fight so I paid the $80 for the PPV. We started with 20 guys in the apartment, and then all the gals came in too and we had a bout 50 people watching.

It was nice to have longer that the 91 seconds you guys got for Tyson v Spinks. I think, if I remember correctly, I went to the Civic Arena in Pittsburgh for the broadcast of that fight. That was a blast, something that you don't see much of anymore. I remember going to the local theater for Fury v Wilder #2.
