Fake news by Davey. That photo was way before the ball hit Meyers.

Yep.  A RH batter will always be in violation of the rule by his standard.  It’s a dumb rule anyway.   They don’t have a lane for the other bases.  How many times have you seen a first baseman hit a runner going to second?  Happens all the time.

Well that was an eventful day at MMP. During BP a very young girl took a hard liner to the head standing right at the edge of the netting down left field line. We heard the smack standing in the Crawford boxes. EMTs, the Nationals trainers and even some of the National players went to help. Trevor Williams went and gave her a bat, but they ended up taking her to the hospital. Late in the game right below us an older lady took a foul ball to the mouth and was ushered out bleeding. Add in the 9th inning shenanigans and Stone Garrett tossing my wife (no pix) a ball and you’ve got a memorable Stros game.

I bet he wrote his number on the ball.

Now that the game's over, can we talk about this? This is a huge blow to us, even though the SP is doing well. Do we make a move given this news or roll with what we got?

I think a lot depends on urquidy, but we need an insurance arm. not sure it'll be anyone of quality though

Dave Martinez is a jackass

Correct. But he’s right in this instance. Jake is running outside the marked running lane, obstructing the catcher’s throwing lane. It doesn’t matter that he’s in the lane when the ball hit him. The exception is if the catcher doesn’t make a throw or his throw is way off target. As to Guadaloopy’s assertion that a RH batter is always going to be in violation, the running lane doesn’t begin until halfway down the line.

Disagree based on rule intepretation. Runner can be out of the lane and in the way if they are trying to touch 1st base, since it is in fair territory. By the time the play is being made Jake is doing that.

If it would have been half a second or more earlier I would say he should be out, but not in this scenario.

Right call was made

It’s a dumb rule.  Make a good throw and it’s a non-issue.   Or put in a safety bag so the runner can stay in foul territory the whole way down the line.

I do enjoy Martinez’ tantrums though.  Cry more.

Martinez can’t have it both ways. Nor can Surly posters who, no doubt, agreed with this call.

And screw you for making me listen to Joe Buck in the morning.

Wrong, many thought we got a lucky break on that call as well.

What I don't understand is how that play was reviewed but last night's wasn't.

I agree with Martinez about the inconsistent application of the rule, but disagree wholeheartedly with his bitchass comments that they lost the game because of the ump's defensible judgment call that Meyers didn't interfere. He may have been running out of the lane but he's in line with first base when the throw arrives and more importantly imo, the throw did not beat him to the bag.

I guess Martinez wants every catcher to just peg guys in the back as they're running to first base?

I heard that Martinez is a big fan of getting pegged.

Full disclosure I wasn't watching the game last night but was listening to the radio pbp while smoking some ribs and crushing a few Art Cars. My interpretation of the final play was shaped only by Ford (who thought it was interference but said it wasn't reviewable) and the clips of Meyers running down the line as the ball hits his helmet.

Having watched the final inning on MLBTV replay, I understand why Martinez was so pissed and kind of agree with @TonyTexas now. I had assumed the winning run had scored from third base and forgot this was a gidp play with the winning run scoring from second on the error. Could've very easily been called interference and it wouldn't have been an incorrect call, but a better throw doesn't allow the winning run to score.

I'll take it regardless.

Dumb rule.

MARK IT DOWN Y'ALL

Quote

“Sometimes when you sit on the bench and you’re a young player and you’re DHing, sometimes you drift. I think that he may be a little frustrated and once he gets back out there, I think he’ll pick up and he’ll be fine,” Dana Brown said.

“But your swing, it comes and it goes. Drew Gilbert will hit. Drew Gilbert will play in the big leagues. He’ll be a good player. You can mark it down. He is going to be a good player.”

They will roll with the current staff and probably use Ronel Blanco as a sixth starter to manage Hunter Brown's innings. Also expect to see one of Dubin or Arrighetti get called up as well. I don't think we have the prospects to make any big trade waves.

It’s a judgment call, 100%.   Just like any interference.    By the time the catcher was throwing the ball, he had a clear throwing lane to the 1B and Jake’s position had zero impact on his ability to make the play.   The ball tails towards Jake and hits him when he is even with the line right at the bag..  It’s just a bad throw, which resulted in an error like it should.
