I'm here.  I just don't care.  Because all roads lead to a bad outcome.

Let Trump get away with every single crime, and do nothing about it?  Recipe for extinguishing the rule of law, and creating the "utopia" that MAGAs actually want: a country in which no laws apply to them, and all laws apply to their "enemies" (defined as anyone who hasn't guzzled the MAGA koolaid).

Prosecute Trump?  Energize and enrage his base, who will now turnout to vote in high and enthusiastic numbers, guaranteeing him the GQP nomination (but let's be honest, he had that locked up the second he announced), and giving him a decent shot at winning the office of POTUS again (2024 will be all about turnout, and an energized/engaged GQP base could be a difference-maker).

There is no winning for us.  Only different flavors of losing.

The only way this stops is when he dies.  That's it.  Until he dies, we are in an unending spiral of hellishness, driven by the biggest cult of stupidity the modern era has ever seen.  We are stupiding ourselves to death, and we show ZERO signs of slowing down, much less stopping.

The bad news: it doesn't stop when he dies.

The good news: Trumpism is actually fairly unpopular among the general public, is seriously damaging the GOP's brand with moderate Americans, and the Republican party has learned all of the wrong reasons from Trump's win in 2016. The public generally is finally figuring out that the GOP isn't the respectable businessman party (which a lot of people who don't pay attention actually thought Trump was in 2016), it's a collection of freaks and grifters. Their anti-trans shit has fallen completely flat in election after election, and they don't really have any other message to go to that might appeal to moderate Americans.

It's taken longer than it should have, because the fucking Democrats refuse to go "hey everyone, look at what freaks and creeps these people are!" But I'm actually more optimistic about things politically speaking than I have been in a long time. Texas might be completely fucked though. As the freaks come to realize they can't rule the whole country, they're going to consolidate here and in Florida.

Agree with most of this, but I don't think it stops when he dies.  In a lot of ways, Trump was in the right place at the right time to insert himself as a head on the Hydra that Fox News built over 2.5 decades.  And when Trump is gone, there will be another Hydra head, maybe with the same last name and maybe not.  But the Hydra itself is here to stay, I'm afraid.

Man, you know I like and appreciate you…your legal opinions are valued, I appreciate your efforts at realistic neutrality and you absolutely helped me at a time when I was really struggling…hell I’ve said I want you with me at parties so I can pull a Billy from Moneyball where I point at you and snap my fingers like he did to Pete so I can get an instant rational take.

However this part here I feel like you’re wasting your brain cells.  There’s 40% of this country that will deny, attack and spew self-righteous outrage at any attempt to portray this ‘man’ as anything but sent from god himself to reign as a holy warrior.

Regardless of priority I feel it’s necessary to prosecute his crimes as the case is ready.  Tiptoeing around for fear of upsetting his base is how we got Jan 6.  Even if both his impeachments were failures, we need them on the historical record.

I'm not saying that fear that the nation will burn is a valid reason not to prosecute.  It COULD BE a consideration.  But it's not happening, so take that off the table and we can stop speculating about that.

I genuinely appreciate the response and how it's phrased, but you are way off target on what I'd hoped would be the thrust of my post.

I'm not fretting or losing any sleep over what I can't control. My opinion is not founded in seeing Maga hats or listening listening to 24-hour news. I do go around not seeing much Maga stuff. I wish that was a reliable basis for determining what terrorists and violent insurrectionists will do.

You suggest I take steps to avoid hearing about or contact with Trumpists. I try to remain emotionally detached in forming opinions; I have no desire to detach myself from news about the tidal forces at work on the republic.

Again, thanks for responding. This response is not meant to be pointed.

I recognized that my missing your earlier point was likely.  Thank your being accepting of my ramblings and my generally well-intended, good advice, its overall inapplicability to you notwithstanding.

It was a much much bigger scandal on Fox that time Barack and Michelle went out on a date, than Trump having affairs with porn stars and Playboy models. I am really fucking sick of whatever gaslighting nightmare we've all been in.

Can we put together a fund to get a plaque for Brisket on the ledge.    Nothing fancy.   Something like the ones in DKR honoring the UT alums who died during WWI.

Yes, that approach to life is really working out for us, isn't it?
I seek plenty of distractions in my life for escape or pleasure. I wouldn't be happier emersing myself in that and ignoring the constant input of diverse things that come at us in reality. Wonderful. Demoralizing. Juggernaut-esque.
Paying attention to the functions and fate of the republic are the basic requirement of citizenship for the life of the republic.

Ok, well, have fun then.

If they leave the battleground rust belt states to consolidate in Texas and Florida, it probably helps Democrats in the electoral college. Maybe that's best for the country long term. Sucks to have to live around them, but my kids have 2 years of school left and I can relocate.

Since my earlier post led up to this, I want to clarify that I wasn't suggesting complete detachment from news and events or otherwise ignoring the functions and the fate of the republic.  In my real life, I'm a small cog in a branch of government and do my small part/level best in pushing the American experiment in the intended, positive direction.  And I never miss an opportunity to cast an informed vote.  My post really was directed more at not being too focused on the thoughts or actions of TFG's minions as that relates to his prosecution for these and other crimes that may be charged.  If they fuck around, my hope is they will find out.  They had cover on 1/6.  I don't think that same level of cover exists.  And the many successful 1/6 prosecutions I believe bodes well for a fair and impartial jury to decide Trump's fate in a similar fashion.

Buchanan went down on everything but the South.

He also holds a very curious position (besides top) in U.S. History.  He was the last Democrat to get elected to replace another living Democrat for POTUS.  Since 1857, no Democrat has ever been elected to replace another Democrat who left office alive.  Please tell your party to get its shit together in 2024 and either keep Biden in office or arrive at a viable alternative.  Were it me, I'd vote for somebody who doesn't mind offering up a final solution to the Trump question.  But then, I clean for a living.

That may be true, but given the party flip (R->D, D->R) around the Great Depression, I'm not sure it means all that much.

I am just way behind on my dumbass history.  I just learned this week that April is Confederate History month with 7 states still celebrating it, and I honestly thought Missouri was part of the Confederacy.  But according to that map, it's not.  It's not that I'm stupid (I am dumb though), it's that I just don't care Bob.
