Caitlin Clark …. Seriously

I’m reminded of (and am old enough, aging myself here) when Tiger Woods was a young pup and took the golf world by storm. All these middle class Schlubs swarmed the local muni’s making hard to play courses even more unplayable with their ignorance of golf culture and standards and ushered in a new era for golf, led by Nike and mainstreaming and accessibility, etc.

You have hordes of new wnba “fans” or people who could potentially be fans if you convert their short term attention and interest in Caitlin Clark and a lot of these newly interested eyeballs don’t have the WNBA fandom and history that the OG’s like Pancho has. Like with golf, you have to give the new fans and eyeballs grace and tolerance if you want the sport to grow into something that can sustain itself and actually thrive. And that means there will be some changes people don’t like— the people who have followed and cared about WNBA in its older state of being.

And like with golf, the hype will wear off, the wheat separates from the chaff and hopefully the sport takes on a new generation of real fans who become passionate and create a new energy and culture around the sport and it creates hobbyists who tune in for all star games and big events, growing the brand, the stature and prestige (and money), lifting all boats.

No body checking, but Tiger probably faced some of the same shit that CC does.

League better stop this shit before Clark gets injured... fans will stop watching if Caitlin gets hurt on a bullshit play.

Can't believe this lame ass shit... Caitlin is the "golden goose" for the WNBA.  🙄

You are really bothered by this. Lol

Yes. Yes, it has. The Indiana game was everywhere at sports bars etc.

League min is $67k (the exact same as the MLS). Average salary is $120k with quite a few clearing $200k. Rookies like CC and Brink are swimming in it - as are marketable players doing big social media numbers or TV spots like Plum and Candace Parker.

And it isn't a year-round job. They can make money doing whatever they want in the offseason.

All that to say - basically all of them are doing better than the average teacher while working an easier job.

Being a professional athlete is not an easier job than being a teacher and I don't think either are "easy"

She was talking about the first one "did you see when JJ knocked me down?" and it's not even close to the same type of play. Running up the court, cutting a player off twice, and getting a shoulder check for your trouble (which seems like was the exact type of reaction she was looking for) is different than standing without the ball and just taking a hip check out of nowhere. But she knows that

Here's what we know... they were "exploring" chartered flights for 2 years.  2 Years!  Either they have the world's worst financial analysts, or "exploring" was the equivalent of my mom saying "we'll see" when I asked for something expensive.  I did an analysis for chartering jets to fly Chinese gamblers to a casino in the Caribbean and it took me maybe 2 months.

Then, Caitlin gets drafted on April 15th and her team... not the WNBA, her team, decided to charter flights for security reasons on May 1st.  Eight days later, the WNBA announced that all teams would get charter flights by May 21st.

But I'm sure that was all just a big coincidence.

So the Fever announce they are doing chartered flights and that means Clark herself told and forced the league to get chartered flights for all teams?

I'm not emotional and I've said if she ends up sucking, I'm gone.  Somebody else is over here screaming and cursing about CC though.  Triggered as they say.

Who is screaming and cursing about Clark in this thread? She’s been getting nothing but props in this thread especially from her savior fanbois

ESPN - americas foremost sporting media network - has never featured WNBA as much as it has in the Clark era.

has the writer perhaps considered that sports is a form of entertainment where value is pegged to level of interest more than level of productivity.  is it wrong that lamelo ball jerseys outsell nikola jokic's?

ESPN featured 25 WNBA games across ABC, ESPN, and ESPN2 in 2023

This year in 2024? 25.

Some brilliance to all of the catty actions, bitterness, jealousy and physicality could be to go after the Real HW and Kardashian audiences. Follow the leader.

Always thought they should be all over those two shows for sponsorships and cross advertising.

The WWE style could really work for the WNBA.

Huh? Please point to where I said Caitlin "told and forced" the league to get chartered flights.

She is the reason they got chartered flights, but not because she pulled some diva shit and demanded it.

Not sure why you're denying that.  Seems an odd hill to die on.

The WNBA sucks as an entertainment product and she's the only reason we're talking about it this much.  That said, I doubt many of us will watch more than a couple minutes of the WNBA with or without her.  I tried, but it's just hot garbage.

The only major women's sports that offer similar entertainment value to the men's version are tennis, and maybe soccer.

Lots of people started watching golf because of Tiger.  Others began watching soccer because of Messi.  Hockey had Gretzky that increased viewership.

WNBA has their shot to gain more fans and grow...

Increased WNBA exposure is because of Caitlin Clark, not Angel Reese | Dan Patrick Show

Love DP.   I’ll disagree about Connor mcdavid pulling people in.  I sti don’t care about hockey

also every talking head acknowledges a racial component, including Chris canty and Nick Wright

The coaches and GMs need to share the following aphorism: A rising tide will lift all boats.

Clark is the primary catalyst to the rising tide (increased interest, attendance, and $$).

Her peers need to recognize this and take the high road.  Rather than say, "it's not just her; what about me?"  Just say, "I am excited about the increased interest in the WNBA.  This rookie class is definitely a part of it, and it will allow more people to see just how exciting our league is."  Or something like that.

People like to watch superstars who are interesting. Clark is certainly that.  Over time, perhaps others in the league will become more interesting.  And the tide will rise further.

i’m definitely not complaining. just pointing out that a lot of stuff that these women do undermines their whole, “take our sport seriously!” thing.

probably good for eyeballs/attention. not great for being taken serious as athletes.

This is a stupid take. Have you ever seen women's tennis?

They're definitely taken seriously as athletes and they go hard for the sex appeal angle.

They're taken seriously as athletes, because they put out a great product on the courts.  Women's tennis if competitive and fun to watch.

Women's basketball, much less so.

With good reason, play the "who'd you rather" game with women's tennis vs women's basketball and let us know how it goes.

Here's a sample... few of the top women's tennis players...

lol, you just said that i gave a stupid take only to follow that up by reinforcing my allegedly stupid take. 1)people already take women’s tennis seriously and have done so for decades, and 2)whenever i come across women’s tennis on espn i come across the women, you know, playing tennis. women’s basketball isn’t getting that same coverage, now is it? any other dumbass, off-the-mark takes you’d like to share? or was that it?

I dated a college tennis player. Hot on the surface but one of her boobs was way smaller and more muscular than the other.  I nicknamed her biggie smallz

I'm seeing a very similar level of attractiveness. Which of those tennis players are supposed to be super hot?

Not sure if you are joking, but if not, you and I clearly have different opinions on attractiveness.

I'd easily go 6 out of 8 of the tennis players (not keen on the 2 on the far left), but only 1, maybe 2, of the WNBA girls... and they've been professionally airbrushed for the cover.  The tennis chicks haven't.  Anyway, I was trying to find a group photo of professional tennis players and professional basketball players.

Maybe dresses vs bikinis are unfair...try this instead

Below are a few samples
