i don’t. nobody does lol.

but in all seriousness, i, and many other sports fans who’ve never watched the wnba before now have had our interests piqued due to a)caitlin clark, and b)the overt, unapologetic, unfounded bullshit she’s had to put up with simply because her league mates are jealous.

this league has been *begging* for attention for years, and. ow they have it, and it turns out that a lot of new fans don’t like these people. people like angel reese, chennedy carter, diana turasi, and even the fever’s own hc, who’ve all gone out of their way to verbally, physically, or mentally fuck with cc just because she’s better than them.

just like with any other sport, people like to root against the villain, whether it’s john rocker, stockton and malone, or now, a whole shit ton of petty, jealous, catty, ungrateful “athletes” who’ve had everything handed to them, and yet who *still* flippantly demand more support, all while blaming others for their own failures, and going after the one person who’s bringing this attention to their league. i’m not going to feel bad about rooting against these women. they’ve earned it. i wouldn’t even be paying attention if they hadn’t gone so far out of their way to demand it.

I had no idea this season was going on until I came across this on the ESPN app.

Apparently they've actually sort of made it as a League now since they've found people who give enough of a shit about them to hate them on social media. Something they clearly aren't used to. They should get ahold of the NBA players to ask them how to handle it. Hilarious they actually think the league can do anything about social media trolls. Newsflash, Americans are at least 50 percent shit human beings.

Quote

Connecticut Sun forward Alyssa Thomas and Indiana Fever coach Christie Sides both called for the abusive comments toward WNBA players to stop during their respective postgame news conferences following Game 2 on Wednesday night.

Thomas went as far as to ask the league to step in to do something about the behavior.

"In my 11-year career, I've never experienced the racial comments from the Indiana Fever fan base. It's unacceptable, honestly," Thomas said. "There's no place for it. We've been professional throughout the whole entire thing, but I've never been called the things that I've been called on social media.

"Basketball is headed in a great direction, but we don't want fans that are going to degrade us and call us racial names. I mean, we already see what's happening in the world and what we have to deal with in that aspect. And we come to play basketball for our job and it's fun, but we don't want to go to work every day and have social media blown up over things like that. It's uncalled for. Something needs to be done, whether it's them checking their fans or this league checking, there's no time for it anymore."

Sides spoke to reporters first after the Fever's season-ending 87-81 loss to the Sun. She was asked what she believed was important to say to her team in the locker room after the defeat. The Fever overcame a 1-8 start to the season to earn the No. 6 seed in the playoffs.

"Just proud of the adversity these guys went through," Sides said. "The expectations that were insane for us to start this season, and what people thought we should be doing, and just the outside noise that these guys had to endure from Game 1 till now.

"It's a lot of hurtful, hateful speech out there that's happening, and it's unacceptable. When it gets personal to me, there's no reason for it. These guys have to listen and watch -- social media is their life. That's just what they do. And they have to read and see these things constantly, and just all the stories that are made up of what people see or think they see. It is just not acceptable when it gets personal."

In the wake of both of those impassioned statements, the WNBA released a statement on its social media.

"The WNBA is a competitive league with some of the most elite athletes in the world," it said. "While we welcome a growing fan base, the WNBA will not tolerate racist, derogatory, or threatening comments made about players, teams and anyone affiliated with the league. League security is actively monitoring threat-related activity and will work directly with teams and arenas to take appropriate measures, to include involving law enforcement as necessary."

No one in here is confused about the level of play.  No one is asserting that WNBA is "must watch" for everyone.  Some of us enjoy watching it sometimes, esp. when Clark is playing.

In the late 80s and early 90s, Conradt had her teams practice against a men's team composed of former HS Varsity players who were playing/winning the men's intramural leagues.  Yes, the men won most of the time and it is not surprising.  Asserting that a HS JV Boys team could beat a WNBA team is absurd.

I enjoy the missed layup highlights as much as the next guy, but don't comprehend the insistence of some to watch it, hate it, comment on it, argue with those who say "stop watching" and then watch more.  If it sucks, turn it off.

Perhaps a "WNBA is total garbage" thread would be more appropriate for some of you.

Yeah.  Female + celebrity + social media = a deluge of horrific comments. Taylor Swift gets a river of vitriol daily. Shouldn’t happen, but that’s not going to stop. Ever.
The price of fame.

A little facetious, but it can be useful too. Have some negative press and your agent will tell you to cherry pick a bad comment and post it. Rapidly move the narrative from you being the bad guy to you being a victim.

The league is just going through some growing pains.

I would be less defensive about it if there wasn't so much garbage NBA and men's college ball that regular viewers are subjected to. Shaqtin a fool exists for a reason. I implore anyone to go watch 82 games of a 17 win NBA team then watch that Fever/Sun game from last night. I don't watch nearly that many NBA games these days and I still wind up watching some TERRIBLE games.

As Briscoe would say, I just had a pifane about why I'm digging the W so much this season.

Angel Reese wanted the villain/heel role and now is crying about. Same flip flop she does complaining about sexualization but also feeding into it by posing for sexy pics. Fuck her. Most unlikable person in sports.

Also... I'm man enough to admit. I have a varied and interesting taste in women and am tall enough to make it work with most of these ladies. I became a fan of Marina Mabrey last night.

What a shocking, completely unexpected 180.

Yeah. Not great.

Overall I think she's cute. Kevin Durant follows her and he's worth half a billion dollars.

Bro what. I'm saying a girl being 6'0"-6'2" range isn't an automatic turnoff for me. Don't worry, I'm still too insecure to date a female taller than me.

Oh I see how I left it up to interpretation lol. I meant height wise. The rest is just fantasy.

My son and I saw, in person, 2-29 Detroit at 24-6 Boston, in Boston, on Dec 28.  It was 2 really shitty games packed into 1.

Detroit led 66-47 at half.  Boston tied it by the end of the 3rd Q and ultimately won in OT.

Depending on perspective that was either 2 really shitty games or 2 transcendent games all packed into 1.  It was entertaining, though :)

That's fun. Always nice when the in-person shit turns out more fun than the ticket promised to be.

I got to see Wemby play Jokic this spring in Austin and Denver kicked our fucking ass. It was still cool, though.

But they weren't taking set shots and being stuffed by the rim, I bet.

Wow

To add to the evidence that she is single handedly getting the entire league fucking paid...

If there's ever been a better example of Most Valuable Player, I'd like to see it. They could give her half the total league salary, and she would still be underpaid.

Could be. MJ was certainly up there. NBA fell off a cliff in '99 (lockout didn't help).

Tiger is on an extremely short list if not #1.

Serena.

Gretzky.

Maybe a couple fighters like Tyson or Ali.

Earnhardt was pretty mega famous and adored.

I cant think of a better example. Outside of Texas playing in the final four or something, I don't think I watched more than an hour of women's hoops in the last 5 years, and zero WNBA. Between her games at Iowa and Fever games, I probably watched 10 hours over the last year. Without CC, that total would have been 0.0.

yeah actually he’s the obvious answer. the very reason that the five best players in the nba are foreigners is because wise of what MJ (and david stern) did for basketball in 1992.

yeah that’s exactly my experience. i check on UT women’s scores every now and then, but i never watch women’s hoops…except for cc every now and then. she’s worth tuning in for.

i will say this- if the wnba ever makes a dollar it is because of caitlin clark. period.

There's decent evidence that the WNBA is in the green at this point.

The "operating at a loss/NBA subsidy" trope is based on outdated data.

I think Tiger is the obvious answer if we're being honest. He single-handedly made golf the biggest country club sport again and then some.

Also Bird/Magic but that wasn't just one person.
