What's so generous of CC to advocate for spot team bonuses for the visiting team?  As she's the main visiting team draw, isn't that entirely in her interest?  Not saying she doesn't deserve it, just that it's not some selfless act, unless I misunderstand how these spot bonuses would work.

Given the "Fuck you, I'm in this for me, even though we're all on welfare!" attitude of the WNBA in general, it's indicative of a different mindset by a leading player.

and she’s better than all but one or two of them.

LOL how the fuck would you know you don't watch the games.

The player in that clip you're trying to put on blast is 100% a better player than CC. Go look up her stats this past season because I'm guessing you aren't familiar. And I think the point she's trying to make is that white girls get more media coverage and sponsorship deals. Look at Cameron Brink or Ionescu who was getting State Farm ads when she still sucked. I don't think A'Ja worded it very well but I also don't really care what A'ja's political opinion is just like I assume that half the players in the NBA are dumbasses.

I like you but I'm gonna check you when you bring weak shit in these threads. Mainly because I think you'd dig the W if you let a lot of shit go.

"Privilege" is one of the most overused and misapplied words in today's lexicon, imo.

I also agree with this.

because all of her record breaking stats and exploits are all over espn, twitter, instagram, and this thread? because she’s a rookie who’s going to finish top 3-4 in MVP voting?

i don’t watch the league for the specific reason that essentially none of them are as good as caitlin clark. that’s how i know.

I think she's arguably a top 5 player. This season she is not a better player than A'Ja Wilson, Breanna Stewart or Alyssa Thomas. Full stop. Those ladies know how to win in the playoffs and CC doesn't. I bet some folks more knowledgeable about the league could make other arguments that would include more players like Napheesa Collier.

And that's with me thinking that a lot of "advanced" stats don't capture the WNBA very well. Clark wasn't in the top 20 in win shares. She was 16th in PER. Here are the final turnover numbers on the season:

Screenshot2024-10-01002356.png.e023b03833ca24e9a629c7ed80b46829.png

I mean that isn't optimal even if you are asked to do too much. Here's the total assists breakdown:

Screenshot2024-10-01002433.png.c7526bd53eb083b8f44bb692e11f6f17.png

Clark is a phenom and will win multiple MVPs and titles in her career barring someone Princess Diana-ing her. I mean I fucking adore her. Claiming her as a top 3 player already is just silly shit that you're better than.

I'd encourage you to set some shit aside and try and watch some of this stuff with an open mind. I'm really starting to dig it - some of these girls can seriously fucking ball. Just like CC.

If you can appreciate Rodman or Draymond Green you can appreciate this chick busting CC's ass in the first round with a dysfunctional jumpshot.

First game in the semis after this she went 17/10/9 with 3 swipes on 8/12 from the floor.

There are some KILLAS out here bro.

Is that Clark's fault? A lot of things go into being marketable, and you may not like some of them, but it is what it is. The more postive attention Clark brings to the sport, the more likely it is that more players, not just the white ones, become more marketable.

I see a lot of of black male athletes with huge sponsorship deals, so maybe it's not race?

Ja Morants jersey is more popular than Jokics. On that not remember that time embiid won the mvp over him?

Yup, it is not race, but that is convenient crutch as opposed to saying they bring no significant amount of fans to a brand.  Clark is bringing a significant amount of fans to the sport/sponsors (like Tiger, MJ etc), and also to her fellow WNBA players who had little to none before.  Much easier to blame outside forces than face the reality that you aren't marketable because not enough people care to watch you play basketball.

Sabrina ionescu is arguably hotter and white. Great player. Nobody cared when she entered the draft.  Elena Della Donne as well. Hot, white unique game.  Nobody cares

But imo some of the backlash against Caitlin has to do with race

i’m trying to remember the last time a famous athlete said something that was so universally poorly received. scrolling twitter yesterday like half of my feed was people (random fans, accounts with 1M+ followers, hoopers, female hoopers, everybody) just destroying aja wilson for this. as if a)she’s not a rich kid who lived a privileged life and who was born with nba genes, and as if b)the only reason white girls can hoop is because of some imaginary “privilege”.  people are crushing her. worst take since john rocker opined on the folks using the nyc subway system?  mot sure. either way, the more that the wnba players and their product get the attention they’ve been demanding, the more they turn people off. terrible sport full of shitty people. shame.

This says far more about your self-selected social media world than it does about anything having to do with the reality outside your own head.

Derka: "OH MY GOD A'JA WILSON IS GETTING UNIVERSALLY ROASTED!"
99.9% of America: "Who is A'ja Wilson?"

I'm sure the people you follow, who also hate women's basketball with the fury of a thousand suns, are mad at women's basketball. Just like they were yesterday and they will be tomorrow based on literally anything they can find to get fuel into the furnace. What a unique and compelling revelation. I bet FOX will be mad at Democrats and MSNBC will be mad at Republicans today and tomorrow, too.

There are interesting conversations to be had about how the inherently political nature of professional women's basketball as it's developed over the years intersects with this wider audience that Clark brings. An interesting one to me is how much those who use Clark as a weapon against woke-lib-minority politics actually like or agree with Caitlin herself as a person and whatever her views might be.

How many times will Clark herself speak out against toxic attacks on her fellow WNBA athletes before the same brigade of social-media-fed angry white dudes throw her aside?

I have a feeling she's extremely aware of how quickly love turns to hate and part of her rationale for keeping her head down as much as possible is to protect herself from that particular wedge of her "fan" pie.

where to begin?

1)i do not “self select” twitter’s algorithm

2)i don’t believe i claimed that a record number of americans were commenting on this clip, just that every single person who is commenting on it is universally destroying a’ja wilson for her racist and idiotic comments.

3)i don’t hate women’s basketball, i enjoy rooting against villains in sports, and i laugh at the product that is women’s basketball and the people who defend it and swear up and down that the product is actually awesome.

4)i don’t really follow anyone on twitter. i exclusively use the “for you” tab which shows me posts based on posts i’ve interacted with in the past,  not posts from anyone i follow

5)as i already said, when yesterday’s algorithm was flooding my timeline with commentary on this video, the commentary was coming from every direction, not some cabal of wnba hating cohorts. i’ve never even heard of 95% of the people making the posts. the majority of the accounts were black people who actually do follow and keep up with the wnba.

so i’m sorry to burst your social justice warrior bubble there. but the mere fact that you’re this upset over my comments shows you to not be the ally that you think you are. you would never get this upset over someone talking derisively about a male athlete who was exposing themselves as a racist idiot. i’m treating a’ja wilson the exact same way i would treat a male athlete who said something so blatantly ignorant, racist, and stupid. you on the other hand are actually in here stark raving mad and running to wilson’s defense/ YOU are the one here who is being regressive when it comes to women. hypocrisy, thy name is bad teammate.

this is the same chick who said “it boils my blood” when people won’t admit that they only like caitlin clark because she’s white.

a’ja wilson is an unabashed racist with a victim complex, and you’re in here white knighting her why? that’s right, because she’s a woman.

it is so rich, the abject irony exuding from you “pro women” social justice warriors. you’ll actually get upset that a racist pos gets called out for being a racist pos, literally for the sole reason that she’s a woman. what a champion for equality you are. 👏🏼

It's self-selected; you even understand the mechanism of it. Jesus Christ. You look at your self-selected social media stream and are so gratified and validated by your echo chamber that you decide it is representative of the world. You're the intellectual equivalent of an Angel Reese layup.

Athletes are, by and large, fairly stupid. They say and do dumb crap all the time and get roasted for it all the time. This isn't some kind of profound outlier. Rogers denied Sandy Hook. Irving has made a career of idiocy (I love him, though). Sprewell desperate to feed his family. Rodman went to North Korea.

You're an idiot.

But your stupidity is a separate issue from A'ja Wilson herself and what she's been saying. Happy to talk about that, too.

As mentioned earlier, athletes are fairly dumb. The WNBA has been a small, insular community for a long time with fairly homogenous politics, so the kind of whining, lazy, self-serving thinking we see from Wilson here makes sense to me as a dumb athlete's take on a complex issue as would develop in an echo chamber like the WNBA has been up until this point.

Racial privilege is a real thing and it has some terrible consequences, but not for A'ja Wilson and not in this world of professional sports. It is an important concept when it comes to who the cops will or will not shoot to death, but it's frivolous to bring it up when complaining about potentially having less access to high-paying advertising endorsements. It's shallow and vain and vacuous and stupid. Like athletes often are.
