Likely story is he saw a high end escort and was walking back.  She’ll never come forward for obvious reasons.

Because escorts never come?

I believe our species had a decent run, but it's time to hand the reins over to another one.

Jack Sparrow and his crew are in town.

I've heard stories that their gang doesn't leave survivors.

But then, where would the stories come from?

I'm kinda starting to obsess on this case.

So rich dude leaves the Bay Area because San Francisco, where he doesn't even live, is deteriorating with crime - but he comes back, books a room downtown, and feels safe enough to wander the streets alone at 2:30am, half a mile away from his 5 star hotel?

Nobody's come forward to say they were at a late meeting/dinner/drinks with him? There are no bars or restaurants to speak of down there. The Giants stadium is not far, but they were out of town.

Maybe he had insomnia and went for a walk, but not along the beautiful waterfront across the street from his hotel?

The streets in that area are quiet at night. It's a well-heeled, safe neighborhood of recently built high rises where the residents park undergound and street parking is plentiful after 6pm. I live in a much higher traffic, older neighborhood and have never felt unsafe - even at 2:30am.

It could be a random act w a stranger he encountered. He was stabbed twice in the chest and his phone and wallet were on him after he was found

There's gotta be video of him leaving his hotel prior, and I'm sure more from other buildings in that area.

Something is off here, I think. Curious to see how this unfolds.

Stayed in a hotel a few blocks away from the crime scene on Main but closer to the financial district about 6 years ago. Wasn’t inundated with homeless and druggies but was more quiet and eerie after 9pm.

The late Johnny Bush (composer of "Whiskey River" and a one-time star in his own right) told this story to a bunch of us in Houston, where grew up near the refineries:
After his parents got divorced Johnny went to live with his grandmother, a snuff-dipping lady who favored bathrobes (stained with snuff juice) and rocking chairs. She gave young Johnny a strict midnight curfew when he was a teen, because as she put it "Ain't nothin' but legs and hospitals open in Kashmere Gardens after midnight."
One night Johnny busted that curfew and thought he could sneak back in around one AM. Nope -- granny was in that rocking chair with a dip in waiting for him.
"You know I told you to be in by midnight," she told him. "Where in the world did you get to."
"Well, it wasn't no hospital," Bush replied.

In HS my rule was one week grounded for every hour past curfew I came home. Never really tested it until I did. Curfew was midnight. Was out til 3 with a gal in the reclined front seat of my car. Walked in and pops was sitting on the fireplace hearth drinking a cup of coffee. Scared the shit out of me.

Pops: “Well, that’s 3 hours so three weeks. Was it worth it?”

Me: “Yep”

That was all that was ever said.

I came home after curfew once, making sure to be as quiet as possible as to not wake the dogs.

"Success!"

Then turned the corner into the hallway to my dad with a gun.

"The dogs didn't bark when I heard the door open, so I thought something was really fucked up."

I made sure to make plenty of noise when I came home late, after that.

I mean, can't they just write the losses off? Isn't that what insurance is for?

You don't even know what a write-off is, do you?

Why don't you explain it to me like I'm a dumbass who missed a simple joke?

Just another silly Seinfeld reference.  Wasn't personal, just a pavlovian response whenever I see the term "write-off" in print:

Let me preface this by saying I love SF.  Come for the views.  Stay for the tranq!

Also that shuttered Whole Foods was a block from our hotel.

Had a cab driver in SF about 10 years ago who was very curious about where we were from. Admitted that he always liked to ask people about that because he was thinking about getting out even though he had lived there his entire life. Didn’t like where things were heading.

Almost 40 years ago, my wife and I went out with my sister and her friend who was from a prominent SF family, prominent enough that she was given police protection when the SLA kidnapped Patty Hearst. She was not liking where the city was heading, and things weren’t even that bad in the mid-80s. She was just old enough to notice the changes that started in the late 60s.

I know you can always find people who say who lament about the way things are going in their city/state/country, but I still wonder if either of them are still there.

I assume he got mugged but didn’t have any actual cash and tried to pay them with the Cash app but the mugger only had Venmo so he stabbed him.

Interest rates up, stock market's down, you only get mugged if you go downtown.

Yeah, that's a stretch even for NoCal.

Also, I googled "Unhosed Neighbors" and a bunch of really interesting genre of pornhub came up.

Neighbors experiencing being unhoused.

On high-end escort theory— isn’t the point of a high end escort enjoy discreet liaisons while avoiding late-night constitutionals with unhoused neighbors?

I took that upper-division course at UT,  but 'tanked the final'.  Which is also a thing with them.

Gotta leave her place and go back to your hotel at some point.

No, I’m not laughing at the homelessness. I chuckle at the need to find more sensitive phrases for everything.  Unplanned donation in lieu of “theft” is still leader in clubhouse.

Oh you should laugh. Btw I’d say “drug workers” is my new favorite.

This was Austin during the height of the camping free for all. Still is but but it's mostly moved to the bushes and woods.
