I can't believe that is Colin Farrell.  That's incredible.  Also, a Michael Kelly character should fit into Gotham City well.

Yeah that is wild.  He's certainly had a hell of a career considering he was close to throwing it all away with alcohol.  Good for him.

Love this take on the character and yeah CF is epic in the role. I hope it can live up to the quality of The Batman.

He looks like he has fewer facial scars, so maybe this all takes place before the last film.

It really is remarkable. And Farrell is crushing it. The way he was just looking at the kid while they were riding in the car…so creepy. He brings a ton of complexity to the character: sinister and calculating, but also kind of naive and simple. The mom angle is awesome. They built a lot of context into one episode. I haven’t looked forward to the next episode of anything this much in a long time.

That might be the best makeup job ever.  Doesn't look like him at all, not even a hint that it's him.

You can tell by looking at his eyes, of course. I kept thinking about the poor makeup artist who was having to remove that and re-apply it perfectly every single day of shooting.

I happened across the first episode last night and was quickly sucked in. I thought it was excellent. I've had The Batman recorded on my DVR for a long damn time and I just haven't knocked it out. I hear it's really good. Had no idea -- or forgot -- that Farrell was The Penguin in that. Will it be more fun to finish The Penguin before watching The Batman or does it not matter?

You should watch The Batman. This show picks up minutes after that movie ends, and it would be helpful to know what happened with some other characters.

Also it’s just a good movie.

Ah, so this is technically a sequel to The Batman? Thought based on reading this thread, this was The Penguin's origin story and he was fully realized in The Batman.

Correct. I started watching Penguin last night and thought, "Man, I ought to rewatch the Batman before this, since it's been awhile." In fact, I'll probably go back and watch it before episode #2 as a refresher. The Batman was excellent, btw. It's essentially a noir detective movie dropped into a superhero movie. They really continued the vibe with the Penguin, and I'm definitely digging it.

Re: Farrell, it's almost disconcerting to watch because I keep looking for him, and he ain't there.

He was just an underling in The Batman. This is his origin as the crime boss.

It's like Farrell is channeling Gandolfini. I'd never know it was him.

Pretty dang excellent. Gonna rewatch right now. Great character development. Really like the wit, smarts, and motivation of Oz. Heck one episode in and I'm pulling like hell for the bad guy. Digging the physco daughter too. Gonna be hard to wait week to week but hey I'm happy there is finally something good on worth watching. As everyone has said Colin Farrell nailing it and should clean up on awards

I’m enjoying the fact that they aren’t trying to portray him as some mastermind, which would be dramatically inert.  He’s ruthless but only one step ahead.  They did do a great job (having someone with Farrell’s charisma does a lot of the heavy lifting) of making the audience root for a villain.

Also, in for Cristin Milioti.  She’s always fantastic and this looks like a great role for her.

Also, one more thing--the make-up and prosthetics on Farrell are superb.  I don't think I've ever seen someone basically wearing a mask but able to emote and move their face as much as I'm seeing here.

I think this picks up basically right after The Batman ends.

Knocked out The Batman over three sessions around this weekend's football games. Had to watch the final 30 mins yesterday because I passed out immediately after relocating from the couch to my bed for the final scenes. (I'd consumed quite a bit and it was pretty late.)

Anyway, good flick. Love John Turturro in everything he does. Jeffrey Wright as Gordon, Zoe as Selina Kyle and Andy Serkis as Alfred were good choices too. I'm not a huge Pattinson fan but I think he did fine. Paul Dano as The Riddler was hit-and-miss. He's definitely a strange cat so that worked.

I'm definitely going to re-watch The Batman now with the new added layers.  I remember liking it.

Did they ever release a version of The Batman with the Batman/Joker scene in Arkham?

I turned it on last night to see if my wife could guess the actor playing the Penguin - she couldn't.  Ended up watching and enjoying the whole episode.  I need to go back and watch The Batman because I don't remember any of it.

Almost a ripoff of Tony Soprano.
