Bryson Rodgers.

I just looked up tOSU's 2023 season team stats & it looks like Bryson Rodgers didn't have a single reception + he was a '23 unanimous nationally unranked low 4-star recruit coming out high school in Florida.

He doesn't fit the profile for the type of player UT would go after in the portal. Especially when UT already has 3 '23 nationallly ranked unproven WRs on the roster they already like.

EDIT:

Looks like IT agrees with that Horns247 tweet:

Sark wanted him in the '23 class.

The fact Rodgers didn't play any as a true FR in a wide receiver room as talented as Ohio State isn't going to scare off a coach who trusts their evaluations.

My favorite parts of your posts are the grammar and spelling errors.

My least favorite? The grease stains.

VIP intel: New Transfer Portal prospect to watch for Texas

Hank South (Horns 247)

Spoiler

VIP intel: New Transfer Portal prospect to watch for Texas

Hank South (Horns 247)

Ohio State wide receiver Bryson Rodgers is reportedly set to enter the Transfer Portal, Horns247 has confirmed. A native of Zephyrhills (Fla.) Wiregrass Ranch, Rodgers signed with the Buckeyes as a part of the class of 2023. The 6-foot-2, 185-pounder ranked as the No. 49 wide receiver and No. 357 overall prospect in the country, per the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

Horns247 is told that Rodgers is a player the Longhorns staff could pursue once his name officially shows up in the Transfer Portal. UT offered Rodgers in May of 2022, just a couple of weeks after he pledged to the Buckeyes. We're told the interest would be mutual.

His first year in Columbus Rodgers appeared in one game against Michigan State on Nov. 11. He didn't accrue any stats.

247Sports' Andrew Ivins considered Rodgers one of the more unique prospects in all of 2023. The following is Ivins' evaluation coming from the high school level:

"Slight of frame, especially for a wide receiver prospect that isn’t exactly known for his long speed times, but plays with an exuberant amount of confidence, which allows him to create separation in traffic and then pickup chunks of yardage after the catch. Ability to accelerate in the snap of a finger is without a doubt a strength at this stage in his development while rubber band-like joints allow him to change directions with ease. Posted respectable numbers as a junior while catching passes from a Power Five signee in a shotgun-based spread attack (42 receptions for 645 yards and 17 touchdowns). Saw production dip a bit as a senior in one of the Sunshine State’s higher classifications, but that might have had more to do with the lack of talent around him. Must add some body armor over the next few years and befriend his strength coach while learning how to do the little things like block out on the perimeter, but has a chance to emerge as a bonafide playmaker on Saturdays given how he runs routes and competes. Likely to add value to a team’s quick passing game."

Texas signed one of the best wide receiver classes in the country in 2024 thus far, adding five-star Ryan Wingo, Houston transfer Matthew Golden, and four-stars Aaron Butler, Parker Livingstone, and Freddie Dubose.

Stay tuned to Horns247 for more.

Played 6 snaps this season. The 247 profile did say he’d need some major S&C work before being ready

I don’t mind using Ohio St as a minor league to get our guys ready.

Explain this one to me. He didn’t record a catch for fOSU in 2023.

I'm from Missouri on this guy, but this is the sort of stat that makes me curious about the NIL/portal market and how negotiation works there. The Texas roster has a number of players who haven't shown up in stats in a significant way that I think it would suck to lose, but how much bandwidth does Texas - or anyone else - have to look for them on other teams?

Looks like both of tOSU's '23 WRs with the last name Rogers are entering the portal:

First of all, what the fuck is going on at Ohio State? They are going to be 7-5 next year. Secondly, this guy was a bad ass recruit and everyone will offer him.

Arch Manning didn’t play but 10 snaps in garbage time. Why would we want to keep him on our roster again?

This. Ja'Tavion Sanders hardly played as a FR. Cook hardly played as a FR. The list continues.

If Sark thinks Rogers is talented a lack of production in 1 year is not going to change his mind (especially in a WR room as talented as Ohio State). Also, it sounds like Alabama wants Rogers based on their boards so we are far from the only school that sees potential here.

Ryan Watts played 122 defensive snaps at Ohio State.

With the portal becoming a bigger thing and NIL there will be a lot more younger players entering after just 1 or 2 years. See Alabama this year adding Bertrand (OL) and Overton (DL) who hardly played at aggy.

Only adding "productive" players from the portal is a bad approach because of the changing landscape.

My guess is Antwi or Grayes.

- I *think* they expect Egbuka back

- Tate played quite a bit

- They expect Innis to be ... innit in '24

- Couple of uber frosh

So they're still quite loaded ... but any of Egbuka/Tate/Innis or any issues with the frosh - all very unlikely - would cause a meltdown.

That's the problem with having an elite recruiter like Hartline. He stacks the wide receiver room which makes it difficult for younger players to get on the field.

Sounds like more of a solution than a problem.

Here's my take on transfer portal needs:

1. Don't need anything from the transfer portal:

  • QB
  • OL
  • RB
  • DE
  • K

2. Definite immediate need; should be looking for someone right now:

  • DT
  • TE
  • P

3. Reevaluate if a transfer is needed after spring ball:

  • LB
  • WR
  • S
  • CB

If they wanted a punter it feels like they would have moved on one by now. Sanborn was our first portal visitor last cycle iirc.

Having two scholarship punters doesn’t feel like the best allocation of resources. If you are going to take a HS specialist and put him on scholarship it needs to be someone who can play off the bat.

Yeah, I don't think we are taking a punter.

Sark said something during the signing day press conference along the lines of "Sanborn was a stopgap and they think Kern is the best HS punter in the country."

Not bad, some good roll there but he also doesn't get nearly maximum pullback before extension so there's still room for improvement in his foot velocity at impact.

Wait, is that too nerdy on a high school punt clip?

The BOLD section sounded a little Sandusky-esque.

Pretty sure this guy's brother is a starter for them.  Guessing he'll hit the road to?

He was overrated coming out in part because of his brother’s performance at Indiana. Otherwise, there is no explanation other than the services are absolute trash, which, I guess, works too.

Had been rumors about Ohio St. Guess not.

There’s some thought that Ohio State thought they had this guy coming in at a reasonable number. Then Matt Rhule fucked them with his quote about what QBs are getting. Then Miami and FSU showed up saying they could do that.

Guys like this don’t command much or anything in the portal.  Potential is great and all, but money to unproven players goes to HS recruits.

If you look at Ohio State more closely since Day took over, you’ll see that they’ve overrecruited key positions and basically ignored others on their roster. Their offensive line is headed towards dogshit.

Ohio State’s offense took a step back this year which isn’t surprising given they just lost their QB to the NFL draft and it turns out he is pretty fucking good. But look at how many starters and  key contributors just hit the portal. I get that they stacked the WR room and some attrition is to be expected but that offense might look like total dog shit next year.

Yep, seven of the eight top commits in tOSU's 24' class is skill players and DB's.
