Ok, but your last sentence doesn’t make sense. So exactly who that’s a democrat is more than 7 plus over trump and therefore over Biden?  Random unnamed dems don’t get elected president. Actual candidates with warts and all do.

Politico did not bother to put anyone else in their survey. But anyone answering the poll about a random Democrat would have somebody in mind such as Sanders or Warren.

Harris writes that some parents should be prosecuted for chronically truant children; that prostitution should remain criminalized; that teachers and principals want police presence around schools; that law enforcement should not ignore low-level drug users — all ideas that chafe against the progressive belief that a heavy law enforcement presence does more harm than good in vulnerable communities.

While conservatives need to move beyond a punishing focus on longer sentences, liberals, Harris writes, should “[get] past biases against law enforcement.”

McRaven for President?  I'm good with that.  Imagine Trump and McRaven in a debate.  "Mr. President, with all due respect, while you were scheming to muzzle porn stars and other assorted hoes, I was busy ferreting out Osama Bin Laden."

In a scathing op-ed penned last week, retired Navy SEAL Adm. William McRaven called President Donald Trump a divisive leader who has "embarrassed" the United States and challenged the president to revoke his security clearance.

His pointed commentary, which is unusual for a retired military leader, gathered over 8,700 comments on the Washington Post alone and vaulted McRaven into the limelight as a 2020 political contender.

To get back on track:

Biden/Sanders FTMFW.

Their combined age would be 153 years old at election. I thought the dems were trying to get younger and less white. Those two are pretty much the oldest and most white people in politics (if you consider joe to be a politician still).

Have there been any polls that are rust belt specific regarding trump or are we just waiting to see how midterms play out to judge how he does in 2020?

Doing bigly bad. If he's at 30% re-elect in these states, he's probably just as bad in Pennsylvania.

Thanks for looking that up.

I guess the next question would be, how power hungry are the players on the left?  They should just get together and have 2 people run instead of 12.  It is obvious the DNC wants to control their primary process so why leave it up to chance?  Draft Liz or Kamila and then toss in someone that isn't ever going to win and just let the right choice be made.  Then campaign like hell in 4-6 states and win.  If those numbers are right then Trump doesn't stand a chance at re-election.  Its not like he's going to pick up New York or CA.  His only path is the same one he took in 2016.

Or go the repub route and run everyone in the party, be disappointed with the outcome, fight your own process and nominee, have that person win election anyway, dick around in congress for the next two years because the old guard doesn't want to play with the new guard until you lose it while only really getting a couple of things done.

Welcome to Hell.  Also known as American politics for the next 4 years. Bank on that.  Errbody is going to run now every 4 years, because hey, Trump won, so can I - only need ~30% in a crowded field.

The 2020 democrat field looks to be overloaded, like 20 people wanting to be president.  The candidates doing the most work in media right now will probably be the front runners simply because of name recognition.  I don’t see a dark horse outsider having any appeal in the 2020 cycle.

People want integrity, wisdom, candor, and most of all normalcy.  The candidate that can sell those things combined with good ideas that address the issues most concerning to voters will be the winner.

Or, you know....it'll be Hillary.  Based on a platform of "it's her turn!".....and not much else.

Betting against the Dems fucking up a golden opportunity is a STUPID bet.

Y’all have really got to let Hillary go.  It’s not her fault Americans are uneducated zombies incapable of seeing the dangers of a Trump presidency.

I mean, she literally warned everyone what would happen if Trump became president.

All true.

Also, she was a shitty, unlikable and untrustworthy candidate with no coherent message or reason to vote for her other than "holy shit, Trump's fucking horribad!"*  How 'bout the Dems try to improve on that JUST a little bit this time?  And how many of us think they won't screw it up?  Exactly.

* Which was a compelling argument, to be sure.

She campaigned poorly in hindsight, no doubt, and played it too safe, appealing to the middle.

She wasn’t flashy or inspiring like Obama and I really can’t blame her for that because so few can compete on Obama’s level of campaigning.

In short, the democrats were spoiled rotten with Obama.

I sometimes wonder how 2016 would have gone down if Trump ran as a democrat against Hillary and Bernie in the primary.

I’m not so sure Hillary wouldn’t have been undermined again, like in 2008.

Ok since we just cannot keep from cluttering up the Midterm election thread with talk of this I am going to bump this thing.

For someone who hasn't visited New Hampshire in over a year, Joe Biden’s popularity is strong and steady," David Paleologos, Suffolk University Political Research Center's Boston director said. "What is perhaps surprising is that Bernie Sanders—who secured 60 percent of the New Hampshire Democratic primary vote in 2016—is retaining less than half of that support two years later."

Newsweek, 5-2-2018

I might put the work into trying to explain the disconnect between Bernie and anyone that isn't lily white, yeah that's probably not going to happen. Anyway it's real and he has not done one thing to build any bridges. Worse yet, his supporters are doing a great job of alienating people rather than trying to get them on board.

It don't work that way. He's going to lose in NH. He won't get any traction in the south. He's DOA.

Now keep that shit over here. Wild ass speculation is fine two years out, but try to keep the Midterm thread about that.

I like Ms. Harris. Booker not as much.

I agree with the sentiment of the Warren / Teddy plan quoted up above with the exception that the Left wants bigger government now. I think we want bolder government but that doesnt mean bigger. I don't think the left wants socialism either. The Left wants more of a social democracy than anything else. Social democracy is essentially what we have now in terms of our social programs that support our democracy and capitalistic economy. The Left would like to re-focus the social programs on the people instead of the largest corporations.

why not?

Democrats need somebody who is going to get out segments of the public who aren't voting in high numbers.  Unless Beto gets out a shit-ton of Hispanics and young people, I don't know that he fits that bill.

And let's not act like Bill Clinton was some kind of amazing candidate in '92 - he had a little bit of help from the incumbent, and from the Dallas Dwarf.

Beto has the “it” factor.  Call it youthful charisma or inspiring likability but it’s the same thing Obama had.  That equates to significantly more political capital than policy or platforms.

Trump has the dark version of “it”. “He’s one of us, he’s a goodfella.  He’s says the things we think but are too afraid to say.”

Bill Clinton had “it” too.  He could walk into a donut shop and make anyone in the place his new best friend within 10 minutes.

While extremely well educated, experienced, and politically savvy, Hillary did not have “it” and this is was her biggest challenge that she could never overcome.

1000X this.  REALLY good post.

I remember back in the Clinton era, talking to several adult women who really didn't care for Bill politically.  But at some time/event or another, they met the man, and I'll be goddamned, they all said "look, I don't like him, and am not particularly attracted to him....but within about 30 seconds of talking to him, I'da given him my panties."  Some people just have an otherworldly charm.  And Hugo's list covers some of them, and the type of charm that they had.

I had a buddy like that in college, too.  Pretty ordinary-looking guy, nothing special.  He could walk into any room, we could pick out a girl - the hottest girl in the place, most often - and tell him to go get her.  He wouldn't just get a number.  He'd end up either taking her home or having sex with her in the bathroom or his car out in the parking lot.  Whatever "it" is, he had it.  And so do some of these political types.

Does anyone really think Beto is even going to beat Cruz?  I know he is polling decent but he is still behind and you know the repubs are going to show up at midterms.  I can't see him failing in 2018 and making some run in 2020.

Him failing in 2018 is the only way he makes some sort of run in 2020, IMO.  Most realize he makes a much better national candidate than Texas candidate.

I would just see that as a black mark.  He did take down one incumbent so maybe he can do it with Cruz.  I just don't see him getting enough publicity by losing to cruz.  He'd be the guy on stage with Warren, Biden, Booker who doesn't get asked a single question during the debate.

I don’t have any problem with his policy ideas that I know of but he comes off as too much of a try-hard sometimes and there’s something slightly disingenuous about it.

I see him as more of a strong and influential follower than an inspiring leader.

I thought he would be prez someday when he and Christie were kicking ass together in NJ.  Then he got into the senate and decided to play politics rather than drive sound policy like he is very capable of doing.  Its like he enjoys the show much more than he does the actual job that needs to be done.  It is very off putting to me.  Then again, maybe this is just what politics has become and the politico who has even an ounce of charisma will always be the one to win.

This.  Also, and not sure how much it matters in a national campaign, but he (or at least his staff) is really responsive to constituents.  I'm not necessarily crazy about all his policy positions, but he gets the basics right about representing the people.

The funny thing is that some people think the Dem candidate actually matters. There is no way Trump is not getting re-elected unless he dies first. I’d just about bet my house on it. Charectar assasinations have emboldened those that voted him the first time. I think people are oblivious to how fucking idiotic it is to underestimate the man. He is a master manipulator with a growing base of loyal followers that feel like they have no voice. Making the media the enemy was an ingenious move on his part, especially since they letter in hyperbole and clickbait. PC culture unleashed the fury and wrath of middle America that won’t be tamed for a generation. When boys are no longer boys, and whites are painted as aggressive oppressors, there’s going to be serious blowback. Parading a liberal candidate out there is a fruitless exercise. He is a “I don’t give a shit what others think” idol for patriotic citizens tired of bending over in a subservient manner to the rest of the world when we play the part of savior. Our idiocracy has reached its peak and 2 years is not nearly enough time to put the toothpaste back in the tube.

A failed impeachment will seal the deal.

You think trump is gonna win Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania again? Based on what? Or what Hillary states is trump gonna take in your opinion?

Or are you just talking out of your ass?
