Look, we need to abandon the politics of the past for the politics of the future.

What does that mean?

The past is the past, OK? The future is the future.

Well, we have to end apartheid for one. And slow down the nuclear arms race, stop terrorism and world hunger. We have to provide food and shelter for the homeless, and oppose racial discrimination and promote civil rights, while also promoting equal rights for women. We have to encourage a return to traditional moral values. Most importantly, we have to promote general social concern and less materialism in young people.

America needs to come together to address the politics of the past with the dream of the future for our children.

Democratic Unity. Gotta love it. Looks like an endorsement photo sometime soon. Great job Biden and Klobuchar. Now stick it to the Rat and the Billionaire trying to buy the nomination. Then let Bernie and Liz unify as the 1 and 2 on the ticket.

when trump supporters hear how trump sold them out like Col. KurtZ in Apocalypse Now - heads will roll. He refilled the swamp with more heinous cretins. Details to follow.

Just to clarify - I liked him better in relation to himself not anyone else.

Facts.

Joe is always better as the underdog. Rough around the edges but understood the everyday man. I don’t think that is dead in his heart. Power and wealth corrupt most. It’s human and so is Joe.

Great article:

Quote

If these trends continue through New Hampshire and beyond, Dems will have one front-runner whose economic platform could turn off the well-to-do suburban voters they need to turn out to win swing states like Michigan and Wisconsin … and another whose unfamiliarity and history of tense relations with activists might turn off the black voters they need to turn out to win swing states like Michigan and Wisconsin. This is an ironic state of affairs for a party whose voters have said in every single one of the 400,000 polls taken in the past year that their top priority in the primary is finding a candidate who can beat Donald Trump in November.

Calling my shot, mark it down, "Michael Bloomberg seems like he sucks," but he's gonna be the nominee. This whole thing going on right now is a sideshow. The real billionaires want one of their own in the office and that is the way it is going to be.

I'm not trying to sell y'all on Bloomberg, I am just gonna tell y'all he's gonna be the guy.

If he is up to keeping his campaign promises, if he is truly willing to play "class traitor" to his fellow billionaires and get on with the task of reversing the slide towards a Brazil-like America like he claims he is, it might not be such a bad thing in the short term.

Long term it's terrible. The White House will have been bought like a set of rims at a flea market.

And I am predicting that is exactly what is going to happen.

I really don't see the democratic party getting behind an insurgent billionaire with tenuous affiliation to the party/platform the way Rs did for Trump*. There's a pretty sincerely help skepticism and resentment for the ultra wealthy in a good portion of the Democratic base that doesn't exist on the Republican side.

*lol jk Trump isn't a billionaire

The White House has been bought and paid for many times already. The difference is this time will  be the first case of a candidate using his own money to do it.

This whole "Bloomberg is buying the election," you realize he still has to get actual votes, right?

There so many people that don’t pay attention. They know him from his billion tv ads and will just assume he’s the best choice. People are not smart.

Bloomberg is going to have an advantage of just being the new person on the stage. After a while you get tired of hearing candidates repeat the same thing over and over.

His big advantage (not saying this is right) is that he comes across as not too old and senile (Biden), not a woman (Warren/Klobuchar), not a socialist (Bernie) and not gay (Buttigieg).  If people can get past the Jew thing (they won't) he could beat Trump.  Sadly, I think they all lose to Trump.  The Democrats just had to find a moderate that could win some of the states like MI, WI, PA, FL, AZ, NC.  I can't believe their stable of politicians throughout the country doesn't have someone that is a male, mid 50's somewhat charismatic and moderate.  I personally have no problem with any of the current Dem candidates being President and I will vote for whomever they put forth but too much of this country will have problems with a women President or a gay President or a Jewish President.  I know Obama won two terms but I think the racism in this country has been amped up to the point that it would be tough for a candidate that is black/Hispanic/Asian/middle eastern to win nationally in this climate.  They could have just nominated Tom Hanks and he would win in a landslide is my guess.  I hope I am wrong.

This is quite literally the argument used to support Hillary.

Let's make sure to learn nothing.

We get it.  You love Bernie and all you do is knock every other candidate.  I hate to break it to you but many people in this country do not believe in a socialist model of government.  Hillary didn't campaign in the upper Midwest and took it for granted and that (plus a strong Russian disinformation campaign) cost her the election.  It's like your a paid Russian troll who is trying to push that Bernie is the best choice just so he is the Dem nominee and gets destroyed by Trump in the general election.

I kept telling them to text me, but no, the DNC is full of voicemail ramblers who go on about the weather for 2 whole minutes, then blurt out the important info in the last three seconds. I ain't got time to go back and listen to all that.

Sorry, America. (You'll be fine.)

I've made no bones that I'm a Warren supporter, but will go with a nominee. IMO, some very valid points all of you are making, however:

Bloomberg and his ads. I agree w/ @Biff Tannen. Older folks who dislike Trump's behavior see Bloomberg as 'a nice man,' really kind of like an older Tom Hanks mentioned later. Not in looks, but wears a nice suit, talks a nice game, and has a confident way about him. That sells really well on television. But for folks actually paying attention, the image screams, HE"S BUYING THE ELECTION and thus is a turn off and a vote that will perhaps stay at home.

Bernie, Bernie, Bernie. For better or worse, the 'socialist' mantra affects people in my demographic. White, female, suburban, etc etc. I know the differences between communism, socialism, capitalism, etc and political and economic systems, but the GOP knows most Americans don't know anything beyond CAPITALISM GOOD, EVERYTHING ELSE BAD. The only inroads I have been able to make when the topic comes up w/respect to Sanders or Warren is to turn it around on the person with whom I'm speaking, "what does socialism mean to you?" It has some effect, but probably not enough to overcome the years of propaganda and basic distrust. It's why I prefer Warren, I think she has a little more appeal in that regard. But, she seems to do better in one on one formats with her potential constituents than in a larger platform and that is a huge problem and one I'm not sure she can overcome. Plus, no matter what I think of what she actually does and says, many voters think she is too white and too shrill and too female. She still gets my vote. I vote for Sanders if he gets the overall nod, but my guess is there won't be very many people in this similar suburban demographic who will try and overcome the wall of Trump propaganda and fear that is going to rain down on Sanders and they will stay home or vote Trump.

I did think Klobuchar repped herself well last night. She's getting used to the spotlight. I miss Cory Booker, though. He really got the short end of the stick with the debates.

All of this.  I really don't get Klobuchar.  She is the least inspiring candidate left, including Joe.  She's nice and all, but I feel like she doesn't have nearly the fight that is needed to not only run the country, but stand up to the criminal enterprise that is the R party.

Cory Booker was a solid candidate but got swept aside unfortunately.

At this point with the US economy on solid ground and uninspiring group of Democrats, it appears that a Trump re-election is pretty much a done deal.

Hopefully Michelle Obama can run in 2024 and re-unite this divided party

Listening to her words, she strikes me as super smart. But, going off my gut hunch which is dangerous, she gives the impression of midwestern sensibility when we need a little more mean cut-from-the-team cheerleader vibe. Perhaps she could just as easily slit their throats and turn around bearing a hot dish for supper, but that's not quite the effect she's having.

I'm thinking more like old people like boomer parents who have come to dislike Trump but might vote for him again simply because they don't want a gay fella being president.
I'm not saying that will happen, it's just something that crosses my mind when I hear people like my parents talk about Pete being gay.

People who think like that aren’t going to vote for a democrat when push comes to shove.

Can vote for Bernie, he’s a “socialist”.

Can’t vote for Warren, she’s a woman.

Can’t vote for Joe, he’s “corrupt like Obama”.

Can’t vote for Yang, he’s “oriental”.

Seriously, I do NOT like Pete but this handwringing that “moderate olds” might not vote for him because of his sexuality is bullshit because anyone who that would be an issue for is NEVER VOTING FOR A DEMOCRAT NO MATTER WHAT THEY SAY IN PUBLIC.

Democrats weird need to try and be all things to all people - even shitty people - needs to stop.

Stop trying to convert the unconvertable. Stop trying to persuade the unpersuadeable.

We aren’t going to win by bending over backwards for these mythical moderate boomers.

We win by turning non-voters into voters.

Fuck the “moderates who are sick of Trump”. If they haven’t already quit the Republican Party in disgust then guess what? THEY ARE NOT REALLY MODERATES AND THEY AREN’T REALLY SICK OF TRUMP.

And there’s like, 5,000 of those mythical people anyway so they aren’t worth the bother.

There the same type of people as posters who drive by post here and say “Oh you Democrats aren’t going to nominate who I like so you’re forcing me to vote for Trump again”!

Those people are lying. There’s no one Democrats can nominate to convert them - they just say that to justify their support of a fascist shithead.

Trump won whites 58 to 37.
Trump won white women 52 to 43. (white women showed up more than white men by 2-3%)
Trump won voters 45 or older.
Trump won voters who make $50k or more.

If these things describe you, you aren't the fucking demographic we need to be focused on because your demographic is going to vote for Trump again. Fuck your idiotic anecdotal evidence about your your fellow 45+ white suburbanite professional totally regrets voting for Trump, it doesn't mean shit.

What you're doing isn't rational forecasting or punditry, what you're doing is trying to pretend that you aren't in the group you actually are.

There is no margin here. A hard blitz to capture terrified white suburbanites will get us maybe 2 or 3 god damned points. Donald Trump was known as a disgusting sexual assault sex creep and a joke for decades and what was the response from white women? A 4-point drop from Romney.

Trump's approval right now among whites? 51% approve, 49% disapprove. Add 4+ points to approve for when they are actually voting in a booth.

NO SERIOUSLY WE WILL DO IT THIS TIME!!!

There is no Barack Obama in this race unfortunately that will bring rust belt and suburban whites over to the Democrats side.

Suburban voters in 2018 turned on the GOP. If the anyone but Hillary vote worked for Trump the anyone but Trump vote can work for Dems.

He won by 70,000 votes in a couple of states that historically go Dem.

Here’s 538 analysis on 2020 based on statewide results in 2018:

States shaded in light blue were won by Democrats, but by fewer than 5 percentage points. So it’s noteworthy which states are not in light blue but are solid blue instead. Democrats won the popular vote in Michigan by 7 percentage points, in Wisconsin by 8 points, in Pennsylvania by 10 points, and in Minnesota by 11 points. In other parts of the country, they won Nevada and Colorado by 6 points each, New Hampshire by 12, Virginia by 15 and New Mexico by 19.

I agree those states that historically vote Dem are winnable - but not by a 1) a self proclaimed socialist, 2) a gay mayor of a Podunk town, or 3) the field of clowns (Biden/Warren/Klob).

Why don't these things make you angry?

Mid-term elections and presidential elections are different animals. They will come home because their class interests are more important to them than anything else. That wasn't under threat in 2018.
