True fans know you gotta prepare for the season by building up your all-day drinking ability ahead of time. I'm gonna work on mine this weekend.

Weekend? There are not enough weekends left.

You better hope that's not the case because we all know Bear Bryant can't beat St. Darrell anywhere near a football field!

If it's a burnt-orange sunset, ballgame over.

I've been to a few night games at alabama, those hillbillies are pretty wild at night.    It will be fun.

Was it Bama or lsu that was complaining there was no A/C in the visiting locker room?  Do they have indoor plumbing yet?

How was that not called a safety?

Too soon?

Redemption time.

I remember when that play happened my friends mother who is not a Texas fan by the way, but hates Alabama, jumped up and said “how is that not a safety?! Come on, that’s intentional grounding in the end zone! That is definitely a safety and Texas should be furious that it wasn’t called!”

Ok so it turns out bama actually does have multiple scholarship QBs right now. They’re still fucked.

Given Texas’ history of losing to craptastic backup QBs (here’s looking at you Neuhisel (sure name spelled wrong)) the lack of quality QB doesn’t make me feel better.

Texas still winning but I’ve seen too many game where other team’s starter gets knocked out and some no name fucktard comes in and looks like Tom Brady/Michael Vick & Drew Brees all in one.

Jesus God, 6 is so much better than 11 fuckin a.m. As a great coach once said, “There’ll be some snot knockin in the old okra patch that night.” Or something like that.

The shades of Royal and Bryant will be roaming around, causing field goals to hook and passes to be dropped. Weird shit will occur. Nobis and Namath will reenact the goal line play from ‘65 Orange Bowl. Many penalties will actually be called (Big 12 refs?). Or not.

Horns fans will shower Dallas Turner with Bevo manure. The Minister of Culture will get arrested before the game even starts.

2-7-1. Gotta work on it, Bama. Even it up at least before I croak.

Thanks OP for giving us something to visualize.

okra? its spelt and sed okry.

Tuscaloosa tailgating is pretty awesome I've gotta admit.  I've attended several games there and appreciate the collegiate atmosphere of it all.

If you try to drive in from Birmingham on game day, leave Birmingham around 5am.  That drive sucks on gameday.

Which three defenses could stop Texas in 2023?
Ian Boyd

Kool Aid McKinstry, Ja'Tavion Sanders (Photo
The Texas offense is going to look very different in 2023 from 2022. Last year Steve Sarkisian maximized size and power in the trenches with his “Big 12” package featuring offensive tackle Andrej Karic at tight end to help bolster the “power run and play-action passing” offense featuring Bijan Robinson. This coming year the Longhorns’ main weapons on offense will include inside receivers Jordan Whittington and Ja’Tavion Sanders (tight end), neither of whom truly benefit from a big, power run package on offense but will instead need a spread approach.

For opponents, Texas’ depth of talent at receiver combined with their return of all five starters on the offensive line (including future NFL draft picks Kelvin Banks and Christian Jones at tackle) and quarterback Quinn Ewers, the starting point on defense has to be stopping the pass.

Attempting to match up with all of Texas’ weapons is going to be near impossible for most teams, but teams who can either hold up in the box without overcommitting the defense OR can attack the Texas line with inside pressure might have a chance to stop the Longhorn offense before it can start. So which defenses on the schedule match that description?

These three stand out as good tests.

at Alabama
Playing on the road always makes a difference for an offense. Crowd noise can rattle an offensive unit and fire up defenders with the extra energy to keep up the pass rush or beat a few more blocks. Between that factor and the talent level alone we have to include Alabama.

The Tide are built to play 4-down fronts with 3-down personnel, utilizing three big D-linemen and then a stand-up Edge (Ewers’ old friend Dallas Turner) from a few different alignments. I imagine it’ll work reasonably well for them overall, but it’s a strength on strength play against Texas. Whereas much of the Big 12 will likely drop eight into coverage regularly, Alabama’s use of Turner on the edge will require them to cover up Texas’ secondary with traditional 7-man coverages while hoping he can best the Texas tackles or else they’ll need to blitz even more defenders.

Alabama is basically starting over in their defensive backfield save for at corner where Kool-Aid McKinstry returns opposite Terrion Arnold. They’ll likely have the most talented cover men Texas faces all year, but the challenge will be whether they can hold up inside with young safeties and linebackers against Whittington and Sanders.

If the Tide can’t hold up 1-on-1 with their cornerbacks against Xavier Worthy and AD Mitchell then this will be a very tough game for the Tide and the rest of Texas’ schedule will despair of handling this passing game with man coverage. If they can hold up in those matchups, we’ll find out how prepared Ewers and the spread game is to pick apart interior defenses.

at Baylor
Now technically at Iowa State or home against Texas Tech could prove to be tougher challenges than Texas’ early road trip to Waco. However, no one can beat the Dave Aranda Bears for generating a nasty blitz package which can really challenge a young interior O-line.

Last year Sark realized two things late in the game against Baylor which determined the outcome. The first realization was a very concerning one, the Texas O-line simply could not get a handle on Baylor’s pressure package. This really came home to roost when Ewers was sack-stripped and Baylor scooped and scored to make the game 27-24 in favor of the Bears. The second realization made the first less of an issue, Sark noticed Baylor’s secondary couldn’t hold up when the Longhorns got into 12 personnel and ran the ball straight at them. So Texas literally stopped passing the ball and just rode Bijan and Roschon Johnson to a comfortable 4th quarter win after three quarters of back and forth play.

The 2023 Bears are moving 7th year (yes) safety hybrid Bryson Jackson into their own “Star” position after getting little of the physicality and blitzing skill from Al Walcott in 2022 they got from Jalen Pitre in 2021. Matt Jones returns at linebacker as a veteran of this system with pass-rushing skill and will join up with Liberty transfer Mike Smith. Gabriel Hall, TJ Franklin, and Garmon Randolph round out a defensive front that’ll be heavy on play strength and experience. This is the last wave of Matt Rhule recruits left behind for Aranda.

Baylor’s issues are in the secondary, where Rhule’s additions have all moved on. They quietly had issues keeping offenses covered in 2021 behind all of their blitzing but Terrel Bernard and Pitre were such good blitzers it rarely mattered and the secondary included some NFL-caliber athletes playing coverage. In 2023 the Baylor secondary is a collection of question marks and their linebacker positions (including Star) all have iffy range and change of direction in space.

So it’s possible the Texas passing game will pick them apart. Still, handling Aranda’s pressure package is graduate-level coursework for a quarterback and offensive line and if Texas can’t pass that test they won’t be able to fully exploit Baylor’s weaknesses.

Kansas State
Kansas State checks four different boxes for offering a challenge to this Texas offense, but at least they don’t check box #5 by getting to face the Longhorns in Manhattan again.

First, they have a defense which is designed to be able to drop eight into coverage and avoid the problems of not being able to get enough help everywhere on the field it’ll be needed to cover everything up. It’s also a design which can confuse a quarterback and hide weak spots.

Secondly, they have a nose tackle rotation of Uso Seumalo (6-foot-3, 340 pounds) and Damian Ilaio who will allow them to widen out their defense to get athletes into space and handle spread stress.

Thirdly, they are good at blitzing and attacking interior linemen in the pass-rush. Mike linebacker Daniel Green will be a 6th-year senior and 5th-year starter in this scheme and has some blitzing chops. They’ll also routinely slide quick, powerful ends inside to attack guards on 3rd down.

Fourthly, Chris Klieman and his staff are terrific at playing matchup-ball. They will shade their best cover men and coverage help to wherever your best offensive players are, they’ll drop or blitz based on matchups up front, and they won’t just sit back in a few base defenses and try to out-execute you.

In the Big 12 title against TCU they ran a Dime package coverage against the Frogs on 3rd downs with a cornerback moving inside to erase tight end Jared Wiley in man coverage while everyone else zoned up the other TCU receivers. TCU went 2-15 on 3rd down without the easy security blanket at the chains.

The Wildcats are one of the smartest defenses in the Big 12, they routinely bring in transfers to maintain veteran knowhow on the back end, and their coaching staff honed their gameplanning skills during repeated playoff runs at North Dakota State. They do have athletic limitations though (the Will linebacker in coverage stands out) and just sent three players to the NFL draft from defense while graduating two other key defenders.

If Texas can handle the athleticism of Alabama, the creative blitzing of Baylor, and the overall flexibility of Kansas State there’s little else on the schedule to scare them in 2023

Isn't Bama's unique bbq white sauce on chicken?

Quote

“Pork is king in Southeastern barbecue — but not in Alabama. The state is best known for its smoked chicken with white sauce. Created by Bob Gibson in 1925, the tangy mix of mayo, vinegar and spices has become a regional icon, found at barbecue joints throughout the northern part of the state.”
