What's that?

Music AI. Reference appeared in my feed somewhere, name made me curious. It's uhhhh very interesting. Uses tags to drive compositions. Looks like you can give it as much or as little and let it do the rest. I've just barely looked at it,but I have to say it does at least as well as the image AI as seen in the aggy-ai thread in football.

Users get to show their results, and the chicken dinner so far is a duo  called Chicksy Dicks, with a bluegrass version of Don't Think Twice.

I'm gonna fool with it some. Let me know what you think of it - well, if you think of it at all, anyway.

EDIT: oops... udio dot com

AI will be the death of us all.

I still like Chuck Berry's response to one of his friends losing a musical copyright violation/plagiarism trial - "He shoulda told 'em the truth - Yes, I stole it. But I didn't steal it from him, I stole it from the same guy he stole it from, fella named Bach."

Too lazy to look it up, but Randy Travis has a new song coming out that is totally AI generated since the guy literally has no voice anymore

Not sure what I think about this

Randy Travis Enlists AI On New Single 'Where That Came From'

Quote

Randy Travis shocked fans earlier this week when he announced his first song of brand-new material in over a decade, Where That Came From.

The song is out now, and Travis’s longtime producer, Kyle Lehning, revealed that the pair utilised AI technology to clone Travis’s voice over another singer’s vocals. As Rolling Stone reports, it’s currently unclear who the other singer is.

Lehning explained on CBS Sunday Morning alongside Travis’s wife, Mary, and Cris Lacy, the Warner Music Nashville Co-President, “It’s not about how it sounds; it’s about how it feels. Him being here and him being able to be, you know, a vital part of the decision-making process makes all the difference to me.”

One of the first commercial songs to utilise AI-cloned vocals, Lacy said, “There’s so much chatter about the negative sides of AI. We started with this concept of ‘What would AI look like for us?’ And the first thing that came to mind was we would give Randy Travis his voice back.”

Lacy continued, “Randy’s on the other side of the microphone; it’s still his vocal. There’s no reason he shouldn’t be able to make music. And to deprive him of that, if he still wants to do that, that’s unconscionable to me.”

As Rolling Stone notes, Travis’s use of AI raises questions about royalties and credits for the unnamed singer who provided the original vocals on Where That Came From.

In 2013, Randy Travis suffered a near-fatal stroke that resulted in his ability to sing and talk being severely impacted.

Announcing his new music on Instagram, Travis wrote in the caption, “It’s been a while since my last new recording, but I’m excited to share that this Friday, May 3, I will be releasing my first brand new studio recording in more than a decade, ‘Where That Came From’”.

He added, “You’ll hear much more about the special team of folks who came together to help make this magical moment in my career possible in the coming week.

“In the meantime, just know that when it comes to me singing songs for you, there’s always more where that came from. Thank you for singing along all these years.”

The conversation surrounding AI in music is complex and emotional. More than 200 artists recently signed an open letter against “efforts directly aimed at replacing the work of human artists with massive quantities of AI.”

Artists like Nick CaveJames Blunt and Jordan Merrick have argued against AI in music, while the likes of Billy JoelPeter Gabriel, IDLES, and the estate of Elvis Presley have already utilised it in their campaigns.

I went back to udio dot com and listened to at least the first coupla bars of a bunch of the songs. One of the features is that you can provide lyrics or let it write them for you. A significant portion of the "blues" songs that clearly let it lyricize begn with what is probably the all-timer in real life: "Woke up this mornin'..."

Gonna check if you can write part of the lyrics and let it fill in. I'm thinking "Another man done gone", "Big-leg woman"...

Having seen this, I'm guessing there's probably a program or five on the net that does blues lyrics, country lyrics and whatnot, but not music and doesn't even call itself an "AI".

Too much fun.

I have been playing with Synthesizer V, and its a pretty powerful AI vocals production tool.  I don't think I'd ever release anything with it, at least not without some leaps in quality, but its great for someone like myself who doesn't have a great singing voice to compose/arrange vocal melody and harmony, to pitch a song or produce a reference track for a vocalist to use to prepare for a recorded performance.  I basically play the vocal part on a keyboard, transfer the midi track to Synthesizer V, specify the lyrics/syllables for the different notes, and apply an AI voice.  The two videos below total about 7 minutes, but worth a watch if you want to compose/arrange vocal parts but don't really have the voice to do so.

Well that's never stopped me before...

But this is a pretty interesting tool to be used that way man.

Yeah, I have about a 0.5 octave range and am shitty within that range, so this helps a lot to write/compose/convey for and to real vocalists who have a range far outside my own.

@G650 did this in about 15 mins today.  Track was already recorded, just adding the melody for the two singers and specifying the lyrics as per those videos.  I think this winds up being like any emulated instrument played on a keyboard.  There's a serious Pareto principal going on, where you can get 80% of the way to a human vocal performance with very little effort, but getting that last 20% requires a lot more work and is probably ultimately futile.  You probably would have to massage what the AI is doing for every syllable.  Anyway, a useful tool for those who don't have a voice but are writing songs to be sung by others.

Edit:  Might could also be ok for release using for background harmonies and such that aren't going to get a lot of ear focus.

This is like me and drum programming. I eventually get flustered and start cussing and just go make some substandard beat on an actual kit to give a guide track to a real drummer.
