Not really that complicated.  Only a POS beats up women.

In the most stirring case, in 1968, Brown's then 22-year-old girlfriend, Eva Bohn-Chin, was found on the ground outside his home. Police said at the time that Brown had thrown her off the balcony. Charges, which included assault with intent to murder, were eventually dropped after she said she slipped.

The list goes on:

In 1965, Brown was charged with assault and battery after an 18-year-old woman alleged he forced her to have sex. He was acquitted by a jury.

In 1969, Brown was charged with assaulting a man over a traffic incident. He was acquitted.

In 1971, he was charged with battering two women. Both women chose not to testify.

In 1978, he spent a day in jail after beating a golfing partner.

In 1985, charges of rape, sexual battery, and assault against Brown were dropped after the 33-year-old woman who made the claims gave inconsistent testimony.

In 1986, Brown went to jail for allegedly beating his 21-year-old fiancée. A few days later, she informed authorities that she didn't want to press charges.

And in 1999, Brown was convicted after working out his frustrations on his 25-year-old wife's car. She previously claimed he was violent and abusive, but later testified that that was not true.

Brown has never denied his penchant violence. Among other quips, he's said and written this, which comes from his book and relates to the alleged assault on Eva Bohn-Chin: “I have also slapped other women. And I never should have, and I never should have slapped Eva, no matter how crazy we were at the time. I don’t think any man should slap a woman. In a perfect world, I don’t think any man should slap anyone. . . . I don’t start fights, but sometimes I don’t walk away from them. It hasn’t happened in a long time, but it’s happened, and I regret those times. I should have been more in control of myself, stronger, more adult.”

Later, during a jailhouse interview with Sports Illustrated in 2002, Brown responded to questions about his history of violence and said: "I can definitely get angry, and I have taken that anger out inappropriately in the past. But I have done so with both men and women. So do I have a problem with women? No."

Thank you.

Complicated guy. Obviously amazing athlete, important civil rights figure, did a lot of great work with youth and gangs, also probably beat up some women. But yes, maybe the greatest football player to ever live, relative to his era.

Very nice eulogy. I would drop relative to his era. As a very young child, he was one of the first football players whose name I knew. Dallas must have been playing Cleveland. My father was rapt. "Jim Brown always gets up slow and walks slowly to the huddle...What a run!...That man is hard to bring down."

It all sticks with me. His plays are the first that impressed me enough to remember. After that, it was the Meredith bomb to Hayes.

I believe Brown said that Earl Campbell, who also rose slowly after being tackled, was the first back he'd seen whom he felt was comparable to himself. It wasn't vanity on Brown's part. To those with even a vague memory of him playing, it was the most generous of praise.

I haven't read the thread, so forgive me if I repeat something. Brown was an outstanding lacrosse player as well as footballer. I wish film remained of that.

So much good stuff about Brown. Then there is the one discredit which deserves to be named. Respect.

Thank you.

should rose be in cooperstown?

should simpson be kicked out of canton?

should albert sidney johnston's grave be removed from the state cemetery now that his statue was removed from the south mall?  despite his US Army career in Mexico and Utah?

and if so, should every slaveholder that signed the Texas Declaration of Independence be disinterred from every State or Federal plot in the state, all counties, roads,, and schools, renamed such that their name is stricken from every book and tablet, stricken from all pylons and obelisks, stricken from every monument of Texas?

our society allows veneration of corrupted individuals and profit in the name of evil

it doesn't make it right, but it's the truth and we have only ourselves to look at in the mirror

Should Brown be in the Hall of Fame? Absolutely. Should repeated assaults of women be overlooked? No.

Should Rose be in the Hall of Fame? Absolutely. Was he an even bigger asshole and degenerate gambler than he was portrayed in the media? Yes. One of my golfing buddies was friends with Rose's bookie. The guy was sick.

Should the other stuff be CR? Absolutely.

No. It was a crime against the sport.

Sure. But I am fine with whatever the Pro Football Hall of Fame decides since it was zero bearing on my life.

Most definitely. Don't take up arms against your country.

Do not give them any type of honor, but make sure everyone knows what happened. This is not a hard question. Do not profit off of the coerced labor of others.

Just never honor a man of achievement; he has flaws.
