Saw the original at the Varsity Theater on Guadalupe my freshman year.  I have a lot of trepidation about revisiting a great movie after so many years but that trailer does make me hopeful. Fingers crossed.

What are your qualifications?

Ah, well. I attended Juilliard, I'm a graduate of the Harvard business school. I travel quite extensively. I lived through the Black Plague and had a pretty good time during that.

Watched the first with my 12yo last night. It holds up and she’s a big Ortega/Stranger Things fan so she’s pumped for the sequel.

Yeah, if done right this could have some The Force Awakens/Top Gun Maverick-type appeal to just about everyone.

I saw an early screening last night. It did what it was supposed to do and be a fun movie. I enjoyed seeing this cast together. Winona Ryder is an actress that is just good at almost whatever she does. The movie was quick and to the point. As a child the original Beetlejuice was not a movie I watched more than once, but this one, for me at least, is something I would watch again. I am sure we will have a few people here gripe and moan about something in this movie, because, dumb reasons. Some of y’all are hard-wired to complain about things.

I would also add that there is a scene where some of your maga aunts and uncles are not going to be real happy. It was quick and there was no acknowledgment or dialogue, but when you saw him you knew the message that was being sent. I mentioned it to a friend last night on my way home and he laughed for a good bit and said “Yeah Keaton probably wanted that scene put in there.”

It's almost as if art is subjective, and different people will have different opinions. Weird.

Shocked, that Hollywood would so something like that.

It’s not the subjective part. It’s the complain for no reason and label a movie as terrible because they didn’t enjoy it. If I see a movie I do not connect with I will not consider it to be bad. I take the stance that even though I did not connect fully to it that it doesn’t mean the movie is not good. Others folks may love it and I think that’s cool.

No movie is made for every single person that sees it. There is a difference in looking at movies like that versus bringing unwarranted negativity towards a movie. This forum has a couple of posters that regularly do this and I just cannot fathom the wasting of energy in writing some of the things I have seen. I did not really connect as a child to the original Beetlejuice. I was young and I just remember thinking it was kinda gross because of the bugs. Now I laugh about that. I think, and this is just my opinion, but I think this is a movie that will probably bring back some good memories for folks who liked the first one. How they portrayed old man Deetz was great I thought, especially since there was a snowball’s chance in hell he would actually be in this movie because of, well, the actual actor being a felon.

And yet, no one has complained about this movie because no one has seen it. You're pre-emptively complaining about people complaining about a movie that no one's complained about.

Sort of related.... I can't recommend the Michael Keaton Smartless podcast episode enough. He does a pretty deep dive into the making of Beetlejuice, Mr. Mom, and Batman.

I was going to recommend the same.   Listened to it yesterday.   Now I have a list of Keaton movies to go back a watch.

It’ll probably turn some people off I think, but it was a quick scene. I am sure it’ll be discussed though in certain circles. Didn’t really add much to the movie.

Saw the movie today. No idea what scene you could possibly be referencing. Nothing remotely political in the movie, other than kind of poking fun at climate change activists

It was not an overtly political statement. It was a pretty quick scene. Keaton has made his thoughts about the former president pretty clear so putting two and two together the scene made sense as to why it got included in the movie.

Good question. Although I think they were already in love with Leno, hence the guest hosting when Johnny took off, plus he had a potentially longer runway than Cavett would have.

Look at Fallon now, for example. He’s got a long run ahead of him as well. Seems to be their preference for that type of show, and the other networks as well. Look how long Letterman went.

I think Dick would have been good though. Others could have too.

More of a original Beetlejuice wuestion, but why wasn’t Dick Cavett in consideration to succeed Carson on the Tonight How?

He was 56 in 1992, still looked great, was delightful, beloved/respected in the entertainment community, and had decades of talk show experience.

Troof on what thunderlounge said, but also, Cavett's ratings weren't ever that great when he was hosting his talk show opposite Carson, and my guess is a lot of the tv brass thought he was a little too much of an intellectual who wouldn't have broad audience appeal. Letterman's success had the talk shows veering back to more absurdist humor and fewer serious interviews, so a comedy background was going to be more highly valued than good interviewing skills.

Saw it yesterday. It was enjoyable. It wasn't as charming as the original. I think that's always going to be the case with a sequel so far removed from the original. Bob was great. The dream sequence was great. The Soul Train was enjoyable. It definitely felt like a Burton film. I enjoyed the way they dealt with Charles without having the actual original actor in the sequel. One thing I noticed is there's now this Finn Wolfhard male character in a lot of movies. Dark mop haired, pale skin loner who has a dark side. We swore we've seen this guy before but it was actually only his 2nd role other than a super bit part in House of the Dragon.

Eh. Kind of hard to believe that was the script they settled on after 35 years. Needed about twice as much actual Beetlejuice in the movie. That was two hours long and if you added up his screen time it was probably about 15 minutes.

it was about the same amount as the original movie.  this was actually something keaton and burton discussed; it was deliberate.

I heard it on the ticket but the google search was pretty quick.

Beetlejuice had just 17 minutes of screen time in the original.
