Walker Railey

I love true crime. I was reading Texas Monthly at my parents house and they had a true crime story about the Fall of Walker Railey. It was tremendous. I can’t imagine Dallas and Lake Highlands during the crime, suicide attempt, exile, trial, etc. It had to have dominated the news and gossip circles.

I heard Reverend Walker preach in Brownwood in 1985 at a regional UMC convocation.  He was spectacular. I was devastated when this story broke.  Feet of clay etc…,

I'm starting to think some of these religious fellers are full of shit.

It’s not just the religious fellers.  Of course, their downfall will be more intriguing and more harshly judged.

Pride and ego cause lots of trouble.

When I was a kid, we lived five doors down from Lucy Pappilon, who was Railey’s mistress.

And yeah—there was some neighborhood gossip about that.

Her kid was in my class.  Also a horn.  And now I know where you grew up. Lol.

So did he basically kill the wife? Or did he have someone do the it? His suicide attempt the week after means he almost certainly had something to do with it. Just bizarre he got hammered for 20 million in the civil trial and innocent in the criminal. I know there’s different burdens of proof.

DNA/handwriting analysis apparently showed it was him that wrote threatening notes to their house before the attack.  they arrested him and he was found not guilty.  He probably paid someone to do it so he could show up and do the whole "OMG Call the police" thing.

I'd never heard about him until this thread, but did some googling and found an old interview with him.  I think George Costanza was channeling this guy when he told Jerry, "just remember, it's not a lie...if you believe it."

Nice find! What a creepy dude. Not the Methodist Billy Graham he was protracted to be.

He definitely did it.  He left a message on the answering machine asking her to go out to the garage because he thought he left the garage door open.  In that message, he said he was calling from his "mo-bile phone" at the Perkins Library at SMU.  In fact, the cell signal was triangulated and he was a half-block from his house.  So obviously he was lying in wait for his wife to come out to the garage to strangle her.

or he opened the garage door for the guy he paid to do it and then "showed up".  the fact that she didn't die makes me think it was someone hired who wanted to get the hell out and didn't make sure she was dead.

Did they really triangulate the cell signals back then to that precise a location?

Yeah--I think it was a pretty big reveal that the cell companies could do that.  I mean, that's now pretty common knowledge.  But it wasn't in the late 1980s.

The shithole I lived in has long since been torn down, though.

I was there.  Fucking everyone was there, bro.  You, me, Matt Stafford, Lucy Pappilon, the A-Chi-Os and the DGs.  It was the fucking place to be.

I lived across the street from the DG house.  My roommate liked to hook his bigass speakers up to the TV, put them on the balcony pointed at the DG house, and start blasting a porn video.

He had motive (girlfriend, and a divorce would have stopped the upward trajectory of his ministerial career), opportunity (his alibi was shit) and there was a ton of circumstantial evidence (his bullshit attempts to portray himself as a target of violent racists).

The criminal trial- it’s wrong to say he was found “innocent”. He was found “not guilty”. Different things.

Did he do it? Yeah, he did it. His toddler son might have seen it.

He is alive and (I just found out) has a Twitter where he does a lot of virtue signaling.
