According to the Guardian play by play, if Japan gets two more bookings and the scorelines remains the same - we will get lots for Japan/Senegal.

And two of the Senegalese bookings occurred during stoppage against Japan.

Can you translate this to American?

so literally, any yellow card makes a diff, any goal, either side, makes a diff.

right now japan is +2 on yellow cards LIVE, both teams booked once today.

if nothing changes, no bookings, japan moves on

Japan is now playing for the1 goal  loss.   They literally are putting their nuts on the table hoping Senegal dont score and chop them off

Well, at least gives some kind of incentive for England or Belgium to try to win their group to face Japan instead of Colombia. But the second round and overall prestige on that side of the bracket still appears to be much easier.

I thought the nips would win the group, so now my thinking about how england approach this afternoon has changed.  They will be happy to win today, beat the nips then go out in the quarters to Brazil.  That's a good England script with honor to show for the trip.  Now, if they lost to Belgium, then they get a no-jamez Colombia, a victory of whom sets them on the path to spanish/russiah-pummeled croatia.

For all those talking bullshit about England and Belgium wanting to end up second. Now they see that things take care of themselves. Play Japan if you end up first or play Colombia that has started to figure it out if you end up second. May be a decent game in the last 10 minutes if they are tied. I think they both stroll waiting to push on chances during the game and really go all out the last 10 minutes to get Japan.

Why wouldn’t the tiebreaker based on some kind of attacking statistic (shots on goal, shots attempted, corner kicks, passes in opponents half etc)? Way better than yellow cards or drawing lots.
