His annual mag of very tiny type has dropped, and he is pretty high on Texas. #2 surprise team, #10 in his Preseason Top 40 rankings (where he believes the teams will finish). He has aggy at #27, by the way. Boycott incoming. Phil tends to be fairly high on Texas, recently with disastrous results,  but I thought that was an interesting pick for this season.

I always try and catch him when he's on the radio here in Houston with Charlie Pallilo. I'd agree that he usually has Texas pretty high on his initial rankings and he's usually not very high on the aggys. In my book that gets him a beer if I ever come across him at a bar.

I get every damn one of the preseason magazines because I am a degenerate. Every year, I end up questioning why I buy anything other than Phil’s magazine. Love his content.

I question that, too.

He’s an imbecile that has a following for whatever reason. His mag is shit, but people buy it. He used to be one of those “Tip line” dudes who’d give you tonight’s big winner against the spread.

I was thinking 10 is crazy high, but 9-3 and a bowl win would do it. If Ehlinger keeps his head in the fourth quarter we might have done that last year.

Compared to the other pre-season magazines, which in the pre-internet days were an annual tradition, Phil Steele gets a lot more right about the teams than Lindy's, Athlon's, Street and Smith, etc. And he puts a premium on recruiting, unlike the others. So for a magazine, he is better than most, if you can handle the tiny text and abbreviations. His stuff is definitely more geared towards the gambling side than the others.

Tell me about how Surlyhorns can’t think of better thread titles.

This shit is piss-poor.

Think before you title a thread ppl.

“Tell me about X” is getting fucking old.

Better title:

“Steele this magazine”

Or something with a @runthebone flavor like:

”Phil Steele is his porn name”

Or hell, if you can’t think of anything:

”Phil Steele magazine drops”

 “Phil Steele magazine out”

I've purchased it (and Dave Campbell's) every year.  As far as mags go, I don't see how anyone can complain about the content.

I do question a couple of things from this year's addition.  Minor stuff but odd all the same.

He had Midget Murray as the 2nd best QB in the Big 12.

He has Texas' recruiting class as #5.  I'm under the impression that he uses a composite of several sites for recruiting rankings; however, I didn't see Texas ranked below 3 in any service.

I can't be the only one who fills in the scores each week for every team right?

Probably. Next year's issue will have them all filled in for you along with closing point spreads. I refer to old issues of Steele all the time because each issue includes the last five years of schedules and lines (along with a whole lot of other worthwhile info). Four issues: 2018, 2013, 2008, and 2003. I've got 20 years of historical data on every team at my fingertips.

Maybe he factored in Liucci’s rankings.

I was always impressed by his ability to tab ISU's turnaround from 2003 to 2004.

I used to grab the magazine annually, and am about 95% sure it was responsible for me getting a hemorrhoid in 2010.  I haven't gotten it in a few years, but I guess that's just more a product of convenience than lack of interest.

It could also be a product of a high fiber diet.

Are you eating the magazine?   The fuck is wrong with you?

My diet in 2010 was beer, chicken wings, and pizza.

Which I guess is probably just as much of a culprit.

Even if you ignore all of his predictions and patting himself on the back and all of the stuff geared towards gamblers... It's still a great magazine to have just for all of the data it puts in front of you.

and maybe when we have the ball and the lead and the opponent is out of timeouts and there is about 2:00 left in the game we could, I don't know, maybe NOT THROW THE FUCKING BALL....

Yeah...even if we are really good this year this team needs to get its head straight about how to win games. Previous experience suggests that we are going to give away a few we should have won next season.

Maybe, but you hope that with the extra year in Herman's program the players have developed mentally as well as physically and can avoid some of those "give-away" games.  That's my hope at least.

the situation I'm referring to was not caused by the players...it was an alleged adult making a very nice salary. We would have been better off taking a knee 3 times and having Dickson pin them at their 6" line with under a minute to go than what that dipshit dialed up

I've learned to ignore recruiting rankings (you can thank the last decade of Texas football for that) but his gambling info is top notch. 7-1 betting on Texas to start the season with a triple play on Texas +9 against OU.

Like when the Sear's Christmas catalog came out and you could look at all the toys.

Growing up in Houston, it was the "Best Products" Christmas (errr...Holiday) catalog.

9-3 and bowl win is exactly what I see.  If we win the right games and convincingly in bowl, I could see #10.  That’s ballsy of Steele but the dude is the best out there.

I miss those days of anticipating the release of the college football magazines. That's when you knew the season was close. Athlon, Lindys and Steele. Athlon was much easier on the eyes but their content was pretty bare and generic. Steele was good but it was information overload and way too many abbreviations you had to figure out. But it got easier over time.

But with the internet the way it is now, I don't really have much use for them any longer.

Them or any of the rest of the print media. You listening, Kunt Bowels?

What are the odds of a non scholarship athlete being a diamond in the rough that helps transform any school currently on the list..?

Out of the non-power conference schools, I would think Boise State at #14 is a bit too high, and having Arkansas State ranked at #25 is a good look for the SBC...
