Apparently I will have to take great care not to use the number 88 in future correspondence. I always knew that Michael Irvin was not to be trusted.

88 is a common statistical sample size? In a 14-point list? With a 14-word headline starting with "We must secure..."?

OK bud

DHS sent agents to talk to him during an interview with CBS.

Complete coincidence, I’m sure.

I got the impression that the DHS agents weren't expecting their attempt at intimidation to be caught on camera.

You guys aren't even trying to deny the 14 words, just desperately searching for some reason to ignore the reality of our current police state's white supremacist nature.

Using 14 words in a headline isn't special.

Using 88 as a denominator is at least odd.

Dude. It's 14 words that just so happen to start just like the actual Nazi slogan. A single coincidence is one thing, a full reference to 1488 is quite another. Pull your head out of your ass.

Scary shit. If someone started an investigation into him without proof knowingly to intimidate, that is bad. It is what we feared with this moron in office.

Using 14 words that start with "we must secure" and choosing 88 as a random reference point for a statistical quote is one of three things:

1. An astronomically improbable coincidence
2. A sympathetic signal to white supremacists
3. Somebody trolling knowing that it's a signal to white supremacists

You can't brush this one off, bud.

Lots of things start with "We must secure".

88 is a normal statistical sample size to reference.

It's normal to use 14 points in an article.

The DHS and ICE are not chock full of white supremacists.

Everything is fine.

None of this means anything.

If a majority of Americans could be relied upon to understand the most basic, rudimentary statistics, they'd understand exactly what this development means.

Fortunately, our systemic dismantling of our public education system will ensure most Americans react exactly like @JBJ just did. If they even notice it at all.

They can brush anything off. Literally fucking anything.

A cop could be arrested raping a woman while screaming, "I love to rape women!" and the fucking boot lickers would say, "Uh, he phrased himself poorly."

True, but this is so mathematically concrete that the opening for equivocation is extremely narrow. There's no squirming out of this one with gymnastics *except* to argue that it was deliberate but not meant to be taken seriously -- which is itself so extremely absurd that there's really no way out.

I don’t buy into this yet, but it’s clear that many of the posters in this thread don’t really get the concept of 14/88.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fourteen_Words

If you haven't poisoned your brain by learning about these white supremacist communities then, yeah, the very concept of these people seem ridiculous, but they're everywhere. They are not millions-strong, but they are widespread and they seek to implement their worldview (as basically all people do). Generally they are incompetent, but they're there.

There is nothing ridiculous about thinking a DHS staffer is a white supremacist who wanted to wave his little white power flag in a quiet-ish way. I don't think this article means that the entirety of the DHS brass conducts secret klan rallies, but it is pretty clear that someone low down the totem pole is having some fascist fun.

The disturbing reality is, again, not the belief that ALL of the DHS is secret racist/fash, but that the actions and behaviors of DHS and ICE are such that outright racists and fascists feel that DHS and ICE are places they not only belong but want to advocate for/from.

The 14 Words:
We Must Secure The Existence Of Our People And A Future For White Children.

DHS Headline:
We Must Secure The Border And Build The Wall To Make America Safe Again

14 points

88 as statistical sample size

When I first read the tweet I was weary of saying it was anything other than coincidence. After reading the headline it certainly seems intentional

Cute, now demonstrate the statistical likelihood of these events coinciding.

WASHINGTON — At least 19 Immigration and Customs Enforcement investigators are seeking to dissolve the agency, concerned that the Trump administration’s crackdown on illegal migrants has limited their ability to pursue national security threats, child pornography and transnational crime.

In a letter sent last week to Kirstjen Nielsen, the homeland security secretary, the special agents proposed creating a stand-alone investigations unit and another agency to handle immigration detention and deportation. The request was sent as a growing number of Democrats and immigration-rights advocates have called for eliminating ICE.

Investigations “have been perceived as targeting undocumented aliens, instead of the transnational criminal organizations that facilitate cross border crimes impacting our communities and national security,” wrote the agents from Homeland Security Investigations, which is a branch of ICE. The Texas Observer first reported the letter.

The investigators said local law enforcement officials have questioned the independence of their agency, given the Trump administration’s aggressive policies against illegal immigration — including arresting undocumented workers for minor offenses, such as driving without a license.

That's not what anyone is saying. We're saying someone inside DHS wrote an article with very transparent nods to pro-Nazi symbolism that is commonly used on the internet by neo-Nazis and white supremacists. That is concerning to me and should be to you as well.

I’m more concerned how trumpers shot up that news office in annapolis today.  We heard that within an hour of the story breaking by our brilliant surly sensitivity masters.

The hysteria on this board is so fucking out of whack right now...but some of y’all believing this horseshit is even more bothersome.

What will you fall for tomorrow?

Yes....but, it’s just very interesting given the amount of time that had passed that they were there on the same day as CBS.

This 14/88 thing is so far out of my field of understanding it's hard to wrap my head around, but we owe it to ourselves to see if there's a plausible explanation.

So, for starters, I count 13, not 14 points. Someone help me out here.

And here's the awkward 88:

Quote

The increase in claims filed is not associated with an increase in meritorious claims. As of FY 17, the asylum grant rate for defensive applications in immigration court is approximately 30%. On average, out of 88 claims that pass the credible fear screening, fewer than 13 will ultimately result in a grant of asylum.

It's terribly worded, but are they claiming that 12% don't pass the credible fear screening and out of the remaining 88/100 people, less than 13 will receive asylum? If that's the claim, it could make sense in the context of a larger document. Perhaps these points were cut and paste out of a larger document where they make more sense?

The "We Must Secure"14-word headline is a bit eerie I'll admit. I wonder what's the typically DHS press release headline length? If this is a typical length, this being a secret Nazi message seems less likely to me.

If Nazis are secretly sending messages through DHS press releases, that's obviously a problem, but that's seriously nuts and there just might be a reasonable explanation for this.

It also reminds me a little bit of this http://lennonmurdertruth.com/ where it's claimed that Stephen King teamed up with Nixon and Reagan to murder John Lennon and they communicated through secret messages in Time Magazine.
