No, it is also that they won't allow 3rd party apps like those used by blind people to have a site read out loud to them. In the service dogs reddit group, they were saying it is discriminating against these 3rd party service type apps and the reddit app doesn't have the features to allow the blind to use it so it will effectively keep them out of the subreddits that are meant to pair service dogs with disabled people. It completely fucks them over.

Dyslexics and disabled folks that have issues using a keyboard too. Reddit doesn't give a fuck about the disabled.

I'm a functioning regarded person and the functioning part is arguable. I use reddit and don't know anything about third party apps. But I do know that reddit uses the shittiest video player that was ever made since the 2006 era. It's truly pathetic. Everyone seemed to figure that part out except for reddit. While the reddit execs are answering questions, I wish just one journalist would thump them on the bridge of the nose for that.

See, the videos play just fine on the third party apps.

Everyone complains about Reddit's video player, but I have no idea what they're talking about.

There are probably monkeys that don't know what I'm complaining about. I just use the site as it is and won't even download the app they constantly suggest. But am i really that much of a Luddite if i just expect sites to work without ground work on my behalf? That's a rhetorical question. I'm an old that's not even that old yet.

I mean, that's really the issue here, innit?

If the site worked properly, for the video player or for long-promised-never-delivered moderation tooling, nobody would give a shit.

Yeah, I don’t get much traction for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu here, so that is one of my main subreddits. It’s almost too active (redundancy and shitposts) though.

There has been zero reason to use the official app until now. 3rd party is easier / better in every way because of so many options.

3 posts from cfb vs 8 in RIF. I get 5 in what I use these days. 3 is so dumb. So is making it hard to flop between hot/new/top

Its so dumb.

For me, the one on the right is way more user friendly. Other than the accessibility for physically impaired users on 3rd party apps, which seems like a simple carve out could fix, the “protest”  seems like a waste of time.

Posted (edited)

The protest is over as Reddit threatened to remove any mods who don't remove the private designation quickly and establish their own mods for those subreddits.

In order for protest to work the protestors need to have leverage and cohesiveness. These mods don't have leverage because Reddit can just replace them and they don't have cohesiveness because so many of them are addicted to being little power hungry forum Nazis who can control their little subreddit flock that they won't dare truly risk losing the ability to work for reddit for free.

As far as the site itself it's where I learned from other musicians how to use an Audio Interface and my computer as a guitar amplifier. It's good for specific shit you have a hard time getting details on from YouTube videos.

Is there a way on the Reddit app to just see the top level responses to a post, and then click on one of them to see the detailed counter-responses?

It drives me insane to have to click on each and every top level response in order to hide the details.

You have the ability to work with whatever setup you want and edit it on third party apps. If you think the protest was dumb, you don't pay attention to much on the internet. Fuck Spez.

You could with some third party apps. You never will be able to in the official app. Ever.

It does seem like the protest amounted to not much. Shut a lot of reddit down for a few days, probably traffic is even still down a little bit, but I doubt many people leave for real.

I don't know which of the big picture subs it is but one of them switched to strictly pictures of John Oliver as a.... way to address reddit's threats while not really complying? I dunno.

slightly off topic, is there such thing as a decent guitar subreddit? I haven't gone looking very deeply but if there's one that isn't mostly... morons and absolute newbs, I haven't seen it.

Again, sure seems like you don't care or understand why Spez is fucking shit up for what they proclaim is less than 5 percent of their user base, why it matters to kill third party apps, why them fucking everything with the API or their general day to day business chances matters.

Basically: get ready for reddit to get worse across the board.

The American consumer is too stupid, weak and addicted to actually be a rational market actor.

Reddit should be done, instead people are too lazy to use viable alternatives or fork over money to keep what they like going.

I don't know that this is true. The economic complexity is significantly higher than ever, but the market drivers are still as simple as ever. Accountability is something that is totally lacking generally speaking about American culture.

We don't hold our children accountable, we don't hold our CEOs accountable, we don't hold our banks accountable, we don't hold our elected officials accountable, the list goes on and on. Accountability takes effort, thoughtfulness and drive. Something America seems to have lost in our successful quest to become fat dumb and happy.

Apparently at least one subreddit (r/interestingasfuck) is back, but practicing malicious compliance. Reddit can't/doesn't have ads on NSFW subreddits, so the mods changed it to NSFW and are not removing any sexual/porn posts as those are not against the policy of a NSFW sub.

It can be both. 3rd party apps are the ones pulling the plug. If they redesigned and made things more efficient they are a viable option. Apollo had too many future "paid" and "lifetime" subscriptions to be able to continue. That wasn't Reddit's fault that was Selig's fault thinking Reddit wouldn't start charging at some point.

I’m sure prospective IPO investors are thrilled to find that the site’s largest communities can be shut down or turned NSFW at the whims of unpaid, non-employed moderators. CEO really should have thought this one through a little harder.

again agree about what you're saying specifically about American culture, but also across cultures and history humans have never primarily made economic decisions by cold and rational calculations of expected utility

this is a bad take and a lazy one at that. he's giving up ~$250k to refund those back. the issue is that they didn't change it in a reasonable manner and that's backed up by all the large apps either closing and announcing it or not closing and not having any updates of any kind right now.

re: more efficient - lol. who defines efficiency? reddit? who wants to have fewer apps so they drive users to their app so they can serve ads and datamine those users? come on.

if you think it is reasonable to go from a free API for the entire life of the API (literally 15 years ago), to $2 million / month in 10 days for any business you need to join the rest of us in the real world. it's not reasonable and there is no reason for that transition to need to happen ASAP. i've seen multiple app creators say that 90 days would have been do-able/work-able but reddit wanted it to happen in 30 days. that's bonkers.

in january on a call with reddit, u/iamthatis (Christian Selig, Apollo creator) asked about API plans:

re: he doesn't want to price it appropriately. you can't "efficiency" you way to pay for power users based on who is going to convert to a monthly charge and how much those monthly users use. it isn't feasible.

image.png.376b36e25bc947c0bfc54989478c5a77.png

don't be lazy and believe what u/Spez tells you about this.

I can't believe he hasn't been ousted yet. Mind boggling. Dude should have just done the exact opposite in every situation, like Costanza. Can't believe he will ever be the CEO of a publicly traded company.

guy, i pay for reddit third party apps and would pay for them moving forward for the right to use them. just like twitter btw. you know how many twitter third party apps i have purchased over time on android/ios and paid for on a yearly basis (Tweetbot)?

don't make assumptions. i would continue to pay for it on a monthly basis if there was a way to do so. but no third party app has said "yeah, we are doing monthly pricing" because no third party app can have you pay through an app store for an amount that changes every single month based on how much you use it. the entire reason they are pushing the pricing on to the 3rd party apps vs the end users is because they want to funnel users to the first party app and kill the third party apps in the first place.

Maybe.  But Reddit is making revenue off those toy-players.  Force enough of them off the platform, and Reddit shoots itself in the foot.  Is that what will ultimately happen?  Beats me.  I hardly understand any of this.  I just get the big-picture, I sure as shit can't look into a crystal ball and see what will happen next re consumer behavior.
