This is the answer to the conspiracy about Ben above.

Couple this and the ending of the last Episode...

Frank don't miss.

Frank was in the plot, he knew what the ultimate plan was with Helen.  It was all a loyalty test for the Byrdes from Navarro.

Ben is alive, some hobo was killed.

With Navarro struggling with the drug war, why not get out?  If your goal all along was just to save your family, they have every opportunity to quit now.  What other leverage does Navarro have on them?  Everyone Marty cares about lives with him.

I like the show, but they got a little too far from the original premise.  The angle that Wendy is "Heisenberging" this deal is a bit much.

Finished last night. Fun, stupid ride. Everything surrounding Ben was stupid and pointless and regarded. Ruth falling in love with him and turning into his ride or die after 2 fuck sessions is regarded. Wyatt sleeping with the ugliest 70 year old in Missouri is regarded. Linney's face is regarded.

I'll be watching Season 4.

Pretty much this.... Enjoyed more than season 2

Well first of all, Marty has a shit ton of money that doesn't belong to him.  And also he knows all about the cartel.  I'm pretty sure he can't tell Navarro, "Hey, we quit. Deuces!"

So I'll ask the stupid question - why was Helen killed? I do not think she betrayed Navarro, and sure she was trying to outmaneuver the Byrde's, but she was wrong - only in Ozark does a Mary Sue appear constantly to solve an impossible problem. Now, if she showed him the FBI letter, I get it - that was crossing the line, but I thought she had it with her. Guessing Eddie does you a ton of email and faxes but maybe.

I get that Navarro didn't go to HBS, but Helen had been a pretty loyal, long tenured soldier ... think the smarter play was to chasten her and keep her around.

She was fucking with the Byrdes, which forced Navarro to make a choice between her or them.  Since Marty has shown he's needed to move money and also brought the feds down on the rival cartel, she lost.

Or the Byrdes are the main characters and she's not.

One of those two options.

am i missing something, or are these folks who are being tailed by the FBI on a daily basis, and are working directly with a drug kingpin in Mexico seem to have no qualms about openly discussing their crimes on their regular cell phones on the reg?

or ruth, a relatively on-the-radar character from the fbi's perspective just doing daily drives to different spots to pick up shitloads of dirty cash being dropped off by known mob members (including an informant) to bring back to the casino every day with no concerns that the authorities might have her tailed?  i mean, if the bipolar dipshit and a kid can follow her, i'm pretty sure it can be done.

so fucking dumb.  everything about it.

Yeah this.  Not just shot, but shot his dick clean off.

I mean, I get that their family dynamics might be a bit different than what I'm used to, but in the macho world of the mob, be it Sicily, NY or KC, the only acceptable response to someone shooting your son's dick off is full scale scorched earth war.

but it is so consistent with the whole episode 7 theme of:

"you don't mess with people's kids.  you especially don't mess with powerful people's kids."

i mean, national manhunt and a sister giving her brother up to be murdered because he told a woman's kid she worked for a cartel.  meanwhile, shoot the head of the kc mob's son's dick off?  "i have a business proposal for you."

Navarro saw her as someone wanting to shake up things via a power play which sowed some doubts about her being loyal to him down the road.  Especially if the Feds or some thing  out of the blue started to influence Helen and thus cause discord between Helen and her client.

small correction. She's not a Langmore, at least not until there is a wedding.

I think it might have been that Navarro had to choose between Marty or Helen and when it came down to it, Marty’s unique knowledge to unfreeze the money in Panama showed Navarro that Marty was more important because he must have money to fight back.

Because Navarro has the hots for Wendy. That’s going to be the ridiculous premise.

Just binged seasons 1-3 over the past week or so, and I agree with lots of the things that have already been mentioned.

I enjoy the show, but I would have enjoyed watching and critiquing/discussing it/occasionally kicking the shit out of it on a weekly basis rather than bingeing - either all at once or on a season by season basis. But I have a feeling that the show is best served by a binge-y format because it's such a thrill ride that it doesn't encourage the viewer to think too deeply about anything.

One observation (hesitate to call it a "complaint" - it doesn't really bother me as much as I would normally expect it to) is that you almost don't have to remember very much backstory with this show as one might assume. The "insurmountable problem of the week" format generally doesn't have all that much overlap with prior problems, and nothing seems to be interconnected to the extent of more carefully written shows (Sopranos, Breaking Bad, etc.). Sure, it helps to have the backstory in mind, but it almost isn't necessary - especially with all the plot holes that have already been highlighted in this thread. In that sense, I think the bingeable, one season at a time format is almost a requirement.

The characters themselves are very well written in many ways, the plots are exciting and fast-paced enough to dazzle the viewer into not bothering to pick nits, but like Gandorf said earlier, the overall story arc (the "stakes" he mentioned) is totally undefined and amorphous.

I would compare the main characters and overall theme to Breaking Bad, the setting and secondary characters to Justified, and the writing to post-books GoT. To be clear, not quite that level of frustration and aggravation, but just in terms of the aimlessness and uncoordination. It's like PF Chang's or Cheesecake Factory - if you didn't know any better, and if you had never been there before, you might not realize that it's just the same junk food as every other overpriced casual restaurant. But it's best enjoyed sparingly, and if you want to keep enjoying it, you shouldn't look too hard for the wizard behind the curtain.

Not that I'm blazing new trails here or anything, but Ben is one of the Top Five Worst TV Characters in my opinion. Coincidentally (or not?) I'd put him right up there with the very same character (Shithead Mentally Ill Brother of Main Character Introduced to Sow Dischord) played by Jeremy Sisto in Six Feet Under.

On the other hand, I really hope that there's a Ruth Langmore spinoff when this is over.

interesting to hear you say this, because you just buzzed thru 3 seasons (instead of waiting a year in between).  obviously, this is the way many of us feel, but nice to hear you agree.  to me, this is the perfect show to get excited about, binge over a weekend, then completely forget everything that happened a year later when the next season comes out.  rinse, repeat.  i don't want to forget stuff that happened in shows, but this show benefits from it, like you said.  better that you forget tiny details, as to not dwell on them later.

Lulz at the rotten tomatoes ratings by season below.  It's like the critics are watching a different show than me.  They love them some Laura Linney.  She's not good and her character is absolutely terrible.  Plus the plot holes.  I only watch because my wife enjoys this show.

Season 1: ok, but some pretty giant plot holes.

Season 2: WTF is this shit? Dreadful.

Season 3: WTF? How did this get even more terrible? Wendy sucks. Last 15 seconds of S3:E10 were good - that's about it.

When Helen talked to Navarro about her leading or watching over the Byrdes and he just gave her that look.  As in "Don't ever fucking tell me how to run my business."

I knew she was a goner.  Plus the father of the daughter is not involved so that gives the child somewhere to land.

I don't believe the brother is dead either and he may be the link between Navarro and the Redneck women.

Funny you say this, i watched the first season of Six Feet Under a few weeks ago and had the same thoughts as i watched season 3 of Ozark. Just a fucking stupid, pointless character that is only there to ruin shit in the most aggravating way possible.

The character was indeed a beating, I didn't hate him it just got old fast. That said he deserves a fucking emmy nom for that performance just unreal. Shout out to all the Banshee fans because he was great in that as well.

We need to get Marty posting on the stupid shit wives do thread.  Mitchcumsteen has ruled the roost for long enough.

The last half of the season I said to my wife if only if she would have listened to her husband..............

One thing that hasn't been mentioned is I am looking forward to how their son reacts when they get home now that he really knows the truth. Could be a decent story line if done correctly. As I said earlier in this thread the show is what it is. They are so far past believable they can't really go back now. It is what it is. I choose to look past the obvious plot holes and just enjoy the ride and great acting.

Saw her on a talk show promoting Dirty John and the host (I think it was Seth Meyers) was freaked out when she just slid in and out of Ruth's character. It was freaky how good she was at it.

FIrst couple of episodes didn't really interest me a great deal, but that happens with any series. Things got really good as it went along though. Some of the Uncle Ben stuff was probably not necessary, but overall the character was a pretty raw one emotionally. I was not really that familiar with Tom Pelphrey before this, but I am going to check him out to see what else he has done. Laura Linney's character has had one helluva progression in three seasons. I also generally just like this show because Jason Bateman is one of my favorite actors. Looking forward to season four.

New to the series. Probably done with it.

Ben was awful. Painful that half of the season revolves around his entirely predictable un-predictable actions. Lame plot device, his only purpose was to mess things up to add plot and give Wendy more emotion.

Theres plenty to work with using Helen, Snells, Cosgrove, FBI, Cartel. Didn’t need to pull in a mentally unstable person just to shake things up.
