If that Byrde Van of happy little songs leads to that family returning to Ozzie and Harriet in Chicago I’ll puke. They all need to die, slowly. Maybe Wendy can survive a bit as a quadriplegic after seeing her kids strangle by the road.

Ruth has to be the winner at the end.

2 eps in and it’s evident there was a carbon monoxide leak in the writers room.

I have a bad feeling this show will end with song and dance hootenanny on the stage of the shitty casino boat.

I just want a fucking dirty nuke to go off at their house taking everyone with them.

Odd Killer Mike cameo.  Did that scene have any deeper meaning that I missed?  Or were the showrunners just RTJ fans who found out he also liked the show and were like, "Mike, we want to get you on the show.  No, we don't have any storylines in mind to add you to this late in the final season.  Don't worry, we'll shoehorn you into a random scene."

"....Yes, of course you'll be playing yourself."

Finished it.  I probably didn't do myself any favors by waiting years in-between watching seasons 1 and 2 before starting up 3 and 4 just a month or two before this last half was dropped, but the show did not hold me or grab me in any way. I really am surprised I ended up finishing it.

I don't want to say it's terrible because I probably forgot a ton of stuff from the earlier seasons but I just didn't give a shit about any of these characters.  Nobody was a sympathetic character. I kind of liked Ruth but didn't like the ending they gave her.

My thoughts

Spoiler

Ruth was great and the only reason this show didn’t get cancelled after season 2 or 3. Her character was amazing in every way. One of the great characters in TV history.  Her death was great too. Are we going to do this shit or what

I was rooting for the entire Byrde family to get killed off pretty since season 2. They were all unlikeable pieces of shit. The cartel, FBI, and their interactions with Byrdes were dumb as fuck after season 1 or 2. Charlotte was pointless. Jonah deserved a bullet. And there is no fucking way he went from mad at mommy to killer in one season. Laughable.

I do think it’s shot beautifully. The colors, the framing and camera moves. It’s well done. The scene with Ben in the car with Nelson, the “streetlights” that would streak across Ben’s face as he’s looking out the window were really well done.

But the writing in season 3 and 4 really blew.

i stopped watching some time in S2. what happened in the finale?

Well, let's see. First the earth cooled. And then the dinosaurs came, but they got too big and fat, so they all died and they turned into oil. And then the Arabs came and they bought Mercedes Benzes. And Prince Charles started wearing all of Lady Di's clothes. I couldn't believe it.

You missed the real ending after the credits. After the Fake conclusion where the Byrdes are immolated by the Mother of Dragons and her brood. We never find out what happens to Kim. Marty wakes up and it’s all been a dream. They’re in Chicago, although Wendy is still sucking cock all over town. None of it happened. I’ve seen that before.

Spoiler

I was cool with the ending. Some viewers want a happy ending for their favorites and a horrible death for the ones they hate but I welcome changing it up.

I know they had only a few episodes to wrap up the story so they had to get their fast but the following was eye-rolling

  • How in the world did Ruth find a barn full of heroin, on a farm that recently had 2 murders (Darlene and Wyatt.) Maybe it was a large farm but come on.
  • The leader (Javi) of the top Mexican drug cartel is just walking about Chicago by himself, zero security?
  • I found the storyline of grandpa (Richard Thomas) to be painful. Why was he a closeted drunk, and that didn't really come into the story except to make us think he couldn't care for his kids. Why not have him toss out a racial slur to really drive home that point.
  • I'm pouring cement for a pool and see the owner burying something big at the bottom as I'm preparing for the pour? No red flags there.

We finished it. It’s like the WagonQueen Family Truckster. If you hate now, wait til you watch it.

I’ll just say it’s perhaps the most unsatisfying stupid series finale ever. Good luck.

Awesome.  Now I know it will be great. Because you’re about as dumb as @futureman’s left nut.

It’s just a hot mess of shitty writing. May be the worst series finale ever.

Did you watch Game of Thrones?

I’ll never throw this in the pantheon of great endings, but it was better than that bullshit.

The ending was in line with the whole series. Entertaining, but implausible and riddled with holes and loose ends.

The last one was my biggest eye roll. They could have easily written that so she wasn’t down in the pool when the contractors rolled in.

You have a good point but if I recall, GoT had some nudity in the last season. Those last few shows were just absurd but tits can make a few points.

I agree with all your points. Javi just trucking around Chicago with a gun, no entourage. And that prof was screaming in the restroom and no one noticed?

John-Boy added nothing. Wendy begging on the courthouse steps was stupid. Fucking Charlotte is almost 18. Wtf is Wendy hysterical about; she should be heading off to college.

It wasn’t great but it was fine. I understand why people didnt like it and Marty’s temp job position in episode 9 was serious, “wtf, come on you want us to believe that?!!!” But overall it could have been worse. And I gave them a pass for all the times the writing was too outlandish before but this one was just too much.

Spoiler

I can see the kids breaking bad, they didn’t hate being criminals since the daughter did it for years and Jonah volunteered to become a money launderer and was good at it; Marty only became one in order to not be killed so I’d argue Jonah was amenable to the lifestyle. They just hated the hypocrisy of family first except when it meant killing their uncle, they needed to be reassured on the definition of “real family” so that they couldn’t be Fredo-ed.

And I’d also argue that was a constant theme throughout since Marty and Wendy in multiple seasons would vacillate between trusting each other and being minutes away from sanctioning the other’s murder. In the end it was “ok, us 4 only and everyone else gets fucked? Cool, in!”

But yeah, I wouldn’t have hated a different outcome for wendy and for that matter Ruth. It won’t be the greatest show ever by any stretch of the imagination but it was still better than a lot of shit out there and it gave us Julia garner so that was cool.

Javi running around Chicago without precautions was consistent with the character, but that’s a good example of why it wasn’t a great character.

The irrational, compulsive, violent madman has become a trope, but in reality the cartel wouldn’t let someone that stupid and cocky get that far. He’d end up like the archetype (Tommy in Goodfellas) getting whacked long before he was that close to the top.

The car wreck summed it up for me. The E1 tease. Then a super violent wreck with the results of a shopping cart ding I. A parking lot. No talk. No emotions. Just gotta get ready for the big gala.

John-boys huge entourage. Where were they? Wouldn’t they notice that he’s a drunk? Why were they there. And the point about the perfect stack of heroin for Ruth after a gangland double murder. Place would have been crawling with cops.

The car wreck was really stupid.  It had absolutely no bearing to fucking anything.  It wasn't the result of some act against the Byrdes, it didn't serve any plot point, it just happened and had no connection to anything that came before it or after it.

I think it was shit like that and John Boy's entourage that kept the show from being better.  Lots of scenes and characters inserted that were dead ends, weren't explained, and just kind of vanished.  The entire premise that his congregation would follow him halfway across the country to look for his son was unrealistic in and of itself.  And why have the story line of baptizing Sam?  That character was around longer than necessary.

I still enjoyed watching it, but there just seemed to always be more extra clunky shit than you needed.

I really thought Sam would wind up killing John Boy because he wanted to be with the blonde lady that baptized him. Weird how they hinted to some kind of weird sexual chemistry there and then nothing.

Agree that I don't see the car wreck as impacting anything about the story. It didn't even seem to give anyone pause how precious life is. They just moved on like the accident didn't occur with the exception of a brief talk with the priest.

Still I didn't have an overall problem with the series end. I don't expect series finale to always be perfect. Ozark ran out of time/episodes and they spent time on, what I think, was unnecessary, storylines.  I didn't care about John Boy searching for his dead son. I didn't care that most of the cast knew the bro was dead but had to play along. Carve out everything related to that story, and the series is better.

Good point about the baptism and attention on Sam. Honesty, I didn't even know his name. I assume his storyline was something along the lines that someone good was able to escape the Ozarks. Still you have to wonder if something between him and John Boy's girlfriend was left out in the editing.

I think the writers thought they'd have more space to flesh out these other story lines (maybe even thought there'd be a Season 5?) and did a crappy job of editing.

I do think the point of introducing John Boy and showing what a jackass he was was to explain how Wendy got to be how she is.

Maybe the producers were setting up a sequel in North Carolina with John Boy, Sam and girlfriend. Sam was always an interesting yet boring character. Going from real estate agent to strip club manager to money laundering gambler to gambling addict to motel clerk. Quite a resume that he built up.

You could do a prequel about the Snells in the Ozarks. A heroin kingpin vs maybe a young Sheriff character as the protagonist. The Langmores could be there but Ruth and Wyatt would have to be super young.

Not sure about Ruth or Wyatt, didn’t the flashbacks show the langmores meeting around Vietnam or shortly after? Could be wrong on that.

Had the aftershow on while WFH today, also said Ruth a 1996 or 1998 baby. But my memory sucks, sorry

edit: had to look it up. Online says 94 but the aftershow clearly states 1998 so going with that.

Sam was so many different things it’s like he was different characters played by the same actor to save bucks. The comments about him and JohnBoys girlfriend came out of nowhere. Was she fucking him? Even Wendy said, “she can teach you a lot of things!”
