One of my very closest friends, a guy I've known since we were toddlers, is a Lt. Colonel in the Air Force. He joined as a medical officer as a Major at age ~ 45. He's actually a veterinarian. They needed anyone who knew anything about anatomy, surgery, etc. because I guess when you're on a helicopter holding some dude's guts in flying out of Falujah (true story x 100) it doesn't really matter if most of the guts you've dealt with are horse guts. They couldn't get the actual doctors, so they got what they could. He is most definitely not a quack. Be careful with that broad brush.
