Haven’t really followed his recruiting. Did we get involved too late? Surprising no Texas teams had a chance even aggy with their GP aggyness all around him.

There might be more to it, but it really seemed like he and our staff never clicked at all. Reports about their conversations always had a very perfunctory vibe.

Three weeks ago Gata was ranked 50, today we’re probably number 10 (give or take ranking source).

I’m not gonna lie, finally being middle of the pack in SEC recruiting this year - it’s a wonderful and unforeseen Christmas gift.

What does Napier need next year to stick around?  10 wins?  CFP appearance?

I am about as unplugged as you can be with any insider knowledge on that.  I have heard rumors that giving him another year was predicated on him hiring an OC.    If that is false, I would be very disappointed. But with our talent base and we have much better play calling - we hopefully won’t be worse than our seven wins.

I think it is more not getting embarrassed by our most hated rivals like Miami and Georgia and blowouts that could pull the trigger .  if we lose four games by one point, and it was not due to bad clock management or play calling, I think he’ll have another year.

our problem is that in the scheduling roulette wheel we have the same top three hardest schedule in the country again next year. Despite his other deficiencies, Billy having to play two years in a row of that schedule is really an unfair aspect that should give him some small amount of Grace.

Having said all that, if he loses our first four games, I don’t think he’ll survive the season

Not sure you can call next year's schedule some sort of monster.

-Miami - loses a ton of starters including Ward and Restreppo

-USF - loses the QB, might still be better, who knows?

-Georgia in Jax - They lose a ton but will reload, of course. Still, just expecting them to be a top 5 team involves ignoring plenty of parity and their roster losses.

-Texas - Loses a ton of starters at QB, OL, TE, WR, DT, DE, Same thoughts as Georgia.

-FSU - they sucked this year and they will suck next year. the portal arbitrage days are over, they recruit like shit, they have no depth.

-@ Ole Miss - those dipshits sold their soul to play for it all this year ... in the Music City Bowl or some shit. they lose everyone and some say Kiffin lacks the same backing this cycle.

-@ LSU - they're a run of the mill program going forward. NIL and the portal and an asshole HC that no one wants to play for have hurt them significantly.

-@ Texas A&M - they're the definition of mediocre and lose most of their high end talent this year.

-Tennessee - I think they'll for sure be a top 10 team.

-Miss State - terrible. come on.

-Long Island U - fuck you guys with the FCS shit.

-@ Kentucky - terrible. come on.

A lot can happen with the portal, but if you guys can't go 9-3 with that schedule, Napier is trash. You bring back plenty of talent and have a big class coming in. You're also primed to spend a bundle in the portal. Regardless, that's not a "top 3 hardest" schedule next cycle.

I will agree with you that it’s premature to say what will happen between now and then.  FSU went from undefeated to absolute shit.  Arizona State went from absolute shit to way, way better.   But as a general proposition, if you are playing one of the toughest schedules in 2024 and you play the equivalent schedule in 2025, there is at least a very good possibility that you won’t have one of the easiest schedules in the country when you have the same SEC schedule.

Forgive me if I do not buy Texas Georgia Ole Miss, Tennessee, and LSU falling into mediocrity.  We’ll see.

Not to beat a dead horse but the recruiting dynamic has changed so much in the the state of Texas that "what's building in Lubbock" is going to follow up it's best recruiting class of all time by finishing with a worse recruiting class than TCU and Baylor.

Well, I didn't say anything about the schedule in 2025 being "easy". My argument is that it currently does not look "top 3" difficult, which is the what you said.

I didn't dispute that Texas, Georgia, and Tennessee wouldn't be good again next year, like, at all.

You can challenge the notion that LSU won't be mediocre, but the trend for them is there. Before having a ton of money and having the right coach, LSU was completely mediocre for more than 4 decades. Saban, new revenue streams, and an inspired fanbase changed all of that.

Look forward, however, and they face an uphill climb, irrespective of how much in-state talent they have. They cannot compete on the NIL front. Threatening momma or daddy's livelihood is no longer is a  problem when the recruit can get $500k/year as an offset elsewhere. They're a poor school in a poor state surrounded now by serious capital and the same level of fandom affinity as their own. LSU is staring down the barrel of a 7-5 ceiling next season.

Ole Miss has been a dogshit program for most of its existence. Kiffin isn't some wizard. He handled the portal better early than others. He's not a great recruiter and surviving by portal arbitrage alone isn't an option going forward. Winning 9+ games at shithole programs like Ole Miss isn't a given or a birthright.

Like I said, your schedule isn't going to fly as an excuse next year.

Based on what is available on On3 and 247, it looks like for the first time in conference history the ACC will complete this cycle without signing a single 5 star recruit.

This will also be the second time that the Big 12 has finished a cycle without a 5 star with the other year being 2017.

5 stars aren't everything. You don't win a conference title just because you recruited a 5 star player. But to have the entire conference go a cycle without one really points to the perception problem both of these conferences face in football, with the Big 12 in much worse shape than the ACC.

It is not at all surprising that TTU has a worse recruiting class than TCU.

In the 247 ratings, the top non-SECX3 and B1G teams are:

ND, 11

Miami, 15

GT, 17

TCU, 23

Duke, 29

SMU, 30

Then a bunch, and then TTU at 45.

The real “poors” are the non-SECX3 and B1G.  Let’s not go full Aggie and say those are G5 programs, but it’s going to be hard for any of them to have consistent top-10 teams.  The top ones from the ACC and B12 will occasionally rise up and have a great season with the right mix of developed seniors and transfers (see TCU 2022), but they can’t keep pace every year.

ND is the exception, of course.  Maybe Miami, but 15 is a very long way from top 5.

That kid in Houston who just learned how to play football is going to Oregon

I have to point out that Lil’ Nigel may deserve some credit here.  This kid is a year behind him and at another school.  However, they shared a coach in common in HS.  At a track meet many months ago, Lil’ Nigel was introduced to Tobi by the coach and they talked for a while.  Nigel asked him about football (which he did not play) and talked to him about how beneficial it could be for him to play because it could pay for college.

They competed against each other that year (Lil’Nigel 10.4, Tobi 10.8 but he is A LOT LARGER than Nigel).  Tobi is a freak athlete who now has an opportunity to not only go to college, but make money in the process.  Good story for him so far.

Kansas St has that 5 star tight end

Texas isn’t paying a non-qb HS recruit seven figures. They never have and Phillips isn’t that guy to change it. This bullshit the LSU end is pushing is manufactured out of thin air.

The reality is that Phillips’ family started to have very real concerns about Brian Kelly as a human versus being compared to the culture at Texas. Players at LSU are starting to turn on Kelly and have indicated disdain to recruits.

LSU doesn’t have $800k/year to commit to a NB, btw. That’s also ridiculous bullshit. $800k was more than LSU used to be able to scrounge up in the bag game for all of their bag game deals in a class combined. Those idiots are as poor as they are dumb and dishonest. There are few dumber, poorer and dirtier fanbases and programs in all of CFB.

I am truly enjoying watching those sorry motherfuckers bawl all over themselves. Things are going to continue to go from bad to worse for those scumbags and we get to be here for it.

Is that a hard and fast no way on 7 figs to a high school recruit- or do you see the appetite to make that kind of offer to the uncommitted GA DT. Seems like if we are ever going to do it a position of desperate need, where we need bodies, where it could make the difference between having the #1 recruiting class and not, getting that toe hold into that area and making GA worse would be the perfect scenario to break that barrier that we've been unwilling to do so in the past.

You got me. Obviously, eventually that is likely to happen. Maybe this is the cycle. Either way, the LSU people talking about it with Phillips are simply making shit up and feeding it to the rubes within their foul-smelling fanbase.

That said, I do love some cajun food. Last night, my youngest daughter requested cajun, so I cooked boudin, blackened some red snapper and made a creole pasta. We ate better than LSU did on signing day.

I'd imagine that DT has to be one of the positions that commands the highest salary after QB. Maybe DE or LT are around the same, but DT has to be up there.

Players viewed as sure things at any position are in the tranche behind star QBs. Top 50 national guys. Anyone else trickles down from there. IOL, LB, TB, TE, ST - those groups don't command as much as WR, DT, DE, QB, S, CB, generally speaking.

So it basically mimics NFL salaries
