I read somewhere Meta or Insta previously had an app called Threads that they killed. Probably still had naming rights secured from that project

Mark my words; within the next week Elon will do something to Twitter that is drastic or stupid or both drastic and stupid.

Threads might have 10 million users within a day.  And many of those people, once they have migrated completely away from Twitter, ain't ever going back.

Expand

The big thing is that Threads is picking up a whole shitload of the companies/organizations/individuals that were verified content creators on twitter.  Being Facebook, it was not hard for them to reach out to all of these people.

Elon might as well complete the process of making twitter into 4chan.

They did.

20  years ago, threads.net was an adult hosting site - $30 a month would get you 300MB of storage and 30GB bandwidth.  My how times have changed.

obviously meta has a huge user base which is part of why this got... stood up so rapidly, but that still seems like an insanely large number given that I don't think they pushed it at all? I didn't open up facebook or instagram and get a notification and "Check out the new app Threads by Instagram!" - I saw the thread here, poked around in Instagram and didn't see anything, and then searched in the app store.

Did anyone else have a different experience? 5 million people seeking out the app and installing in 4 hours.

basically everyone logged onto twitter, saw their favorite follows post "I just joined Threads and I'm abandoning Twitter," and everyone left.

He has 11 million followers on his Instagram, so he will probably be at a million followers on Threads soon.

Speaking of, a whole shitload of celebrity types are probably more than happy to dump twitter, since the integration between Threads and Instagram is tight and will be easy to slide between the two.

Yeah, this does nothing to disprove my “flash in the pan” theory. The # of new sign-ups will go into freefall in a week or two simply due to mathematics. Once the novelty wears off it’s not going to attract new people. More importantly, it isnt attracting any young people. Let me know when a recruit posts his commitment on threads. Twitter is an ingrained cultural stable that isn’t going anywhere.

If the Korean boy bands like BTS make their move over to Threads and ditch twitter, there's tens of millions of serious/constant users right there.  Not that I know anything about K-pop because somebody in my house likes Korean dramas and music.

If Elon actually wants to make money on Twitter, he’s probably screwed it up so irreparably by now that his only realistic option left would be to embrace porn.  But doing that would harm the standing of Tesla and SpaceX, so he (probably) won’t.  Except he might because he’s a fucking Howard Hughes crazy weirdo, so who really knows.

The example you're looking for is the Digg -> Reddit migration.

Digg was THE link aggregation site. Then they fucked around, came out with a totally new version that everyone hated, and within a week everyone had jumped to Reddit. Digg died that very week, and Reddit became the new dominant player.

Reddit is fucking around now, but there's no good replacement yet.

Meta just gave everyone the reason they needed to ditch Twitter. It's all over but the shouting.

I was looking through some old computer magazines, and came across one that was comparing Delphi, AOL, Prodigy, CompuServe, and I forgot what all else (and a couple of the services they discussed were dead and buried and they were discussing how they went under and what current ones might). There's always been mass migrations when it comes to computer technology, when something either cheaper/better comes out, or the old way of doing things became a pain for some reason.  At one point, Commodore 64s were the best-selling computers in the US - between '83 - '86, they had %30-40 of the US market share as an example.  Hell, for years, WinAmp really whipped the llama's ass.  Palm OS fans probably thought PalmPilot-based phones would become the norm.  Internet Explorer was a monopoly at one point.

I tossed out a comparison of Electronic Arts running the SimCity franchise completely into the ground with SimCity 2013, and in thinking about it, it's not a bad comparison - a whole shitload of publications, social media commentators, and SimCity fans were excited to see a "modern" SimCity just like some people were cautiously optimistic that Musk might do something to boost Twitter, but then the launch hit and people realized how bad EA fucked it up, and EA would not do what they needed to do to salvage things until it was way too late. Two years later, Cities: Skylines comes in, and here we are in 2023 and Cities: Skylines has sold 12 million copies, way more than double any of the SimCity titles, and more than all of the SimCity editions sold in the 90s combined.

I feel bad for Blue Sky.  I don't know if they were too cautious or simply didn't have the funding, but this was their one chance to make something big.

He might as well just fold it into his X.com obsession.

He can't salvage it at this point - he would have to A) admit he was wrong and B) reverse some changes that would upset catturd2

My only question is if he realizes how bad it is for him.

I’ve seen a lot of comments from the developers about a “Followers Only” feed coming soon, so I assume that wish will soon be fulfilled. I’m a bit nervous about getting it in chronological order though, since Instagram has fought this for some reason. But it’s essential if this app wants to be the go-to platform for live sports events, awards shows, etc.

Google+ didn’t…. do anything that anyone was asking for, I recall it being weirdly unintuitive, and generally people didn’t have a reason to change from Facebook/Instagram/Twitter.

Like I said before I’m skeptical about big socials dying or losing all their members - we’re not in the early days any longer (prodigy/aol or MySpace) and Twitter isn’t quite a fringe social like Digg/Reddit. The place where the teens are is always going to move around but Facebook isn’t going to just be replaced by a similar thing and it would take a lot to make that happen to Twitter. But, there is a lot - from the odiousness of the ownership and his policies to the severe degradation of service. I’d still say it’s 50/50 that Twitter just withers but I’m enthusiastic about it. I’ve been off Twitter for a year or something and have dabbled in the other new replacements - this is the first one that feels like it will definitely do the thing that Twitter used to do where something big was happening and you could hop on the world’s group text.
