It's been so so as of yet, but I'm seeing a steady trickle. If NatSec Twitter and Election Twitter show up in solid numbers, then it's pretty much on

Yeah, same. I’m not really following what he’s trying to accomplish here. Is there going to be some effort to restrict their posts? Or just exempt them from amplification? I guess we’ll all learn together when one of them points out specifically how this is impacting them

He didn’t say anything about restricting/deboosting/etc news or politics, just that they wouldn’t promote it. I don’t know enough about the history of meta and news to really read between the lines there - if that means actually wanting it not to be a big portion of the app content or if they just don’t want to actively touch it more than they have to. Honestly I’m not sure how much of Twitter is politics and news - I would guess those are two of the biggest areas but I wouldn’t be surprised to be surprised.

My new job tracks my browsing history so I’m not as active on surly as I used to be. I will be at all of the tailgates this fall. Speaking of @immamac can I change my username?
I haven’t made a threads account yet. I’ve spent a lot of time curating my Twitter feed and like where it’s at.

You use your work computer for Surly?

I'm not getting rid of my twitter account until I get my threads followers up.  It's taken a couple years now to get my twitter followers up to the low single digits.

I got more followers on two days of Threads than I'd had in ten years of Twitter.

And my profile is private.

Pretty easy choice here.

Seriously, pro tip, motherfuckers.
Don't use your work machine for personal shit, and vice versa. KEEP THAT SHIT SEPARATE.
We'd still be using Shaggy if someone had followed this advice...

This. Never understood why anyone would use their work computers for anything other than work.

Hell, I won’t even use my work wifi with my personal phone.

They have no problem running stories highlighting the problems with Tesla.  Me thinks it's because they have a tiny staff these days and they seem to be behind on a lot of things.

This thread might help them.

I feel your pain, @52-80. It's very difficult to communicate rationally and moderately with people who, at a minimum, need therapy in order to ingest and synthesize the data points of a conversation. I think @Celery Mangets it and communicates well in that respect, and longhornmatt is usually smart, but you are seeing the mental illness unique to messageboards firsthand.

Question: Since I'm calling this out, what should my next name be?

Lol I really had hope for you this time

RIP in the chat

It’s the social media equivalent of Michael Jordan keeping mum on politics because “Republicans buy sneakers, too.”  They want to be seen as apolitical while giving people a forum to post all their personal screeds to the world, which inevitably will involve lots of politics.  It’s purely posturing to try to make the business appeal to both sides.

I mean, seriously, META is trying to act like politics isn’t a big part of the user experience of their platforms.  It’s completely laughable.  For every 19 year old girl posting bikini pics on Instagram, there are a half dozen people on Facebook, Insta, WhatsApp, and whatever other platforms sharing clickbait political articles/videos or recording a selfie where they talk about their grievance of the day.

It's nothing to do with what you all are thinking, it's financial, because of European legislation from 2019 that's been kicking in and forcing the multinational social media platforms to have to pay for links for news articles, etc. or get fined heavily -  we aren't used to it over here in the states, and I'm guessing twitter either reached a similar deal (which Elon has torn up) or never paid it.  Google has been round-and-round with them in its news aggregation feed, etc.

Stuff like this:

Published 7:23 AM CDT, October 21, 2021   PARIS (AP) — Facebook said Thursday that it has struck a deal with a group of French publishers to pay for links to their news stories that are shared by people on the social network.

The company says it inked the licensing agreement with the Alliance de la Presse d’Information Generale, which represents 300 French publishers, to “improve the quality of online information for Internet users and publishers on Facebook.” The financial terms weren’t disclosed.

Quote

Facebook also said it would launch in January a French version of its Facebook News product, where the group’s publishers could allow their stories to appear.

The licensing deal is the result of a wider push by authorities in Europe and elsewhere to force Facebook and other social media companies to compensate publishers for content. Governments have been responding to news outlets’ complaints that internet companies are getting rich at their expense, selling advertising linked to their reports without sharing revenue.

Quote

France was the first of the European Union’s 27 nations to adopt the bloc’s 2019 copyright directive, which outlines a way for publishers and news companies to strike licensing deals with online platforms.

Google signed a similar framework deal with the alliance this year, but talks over licensing payments bogged down, leading French regulators to slap Google with a hefty fine for not negotiating in good faith with publishers.

. Draft Article 11 (Article 15 of the directive), known as the "link tax", gives newspapers more direct control and re-use of their work, which may impact some Internet services like news aggregators. Draft Article 13 (Article 17 of the directive) tasks service providers that host user-generated content to employ "effective and proportionate" measures to prevent users from violating copyright. Tech companies expressed concern that this would necessitate the need for upload filters.

It's a fucking hot mess that the larger companies have to deal with, and some either ban the countries that adapted it outright, or have to come up with a settlement.

I'm sure there is a bit of it that is about not rocking the boat, but they are also trying to work out how they will handle the EU with this stuff - they have to deal with a lot of issues on a very large scale like GDPR, copyright stuff, etc., that aren't a problem in the US (which is unfortunate for us, we could use GDPR).

Keep in mind that Facebook had no problem banning Trump from Facebook and Instagram, and they only recently allowed him back on, but with "guardrails" to keep him from doing the same stuff again.

https://about.fb.com/news/2023/01/trump-facebook-instagram-account-suspension/

As much as certain groups/olds/whoever bitch about FB doing this or that, they ultimately can't stay away from it, regardless of any political leanings.

Zuck, etc., are promoting this as a truly global platform for everybody to talk to everybody on, but this went out the door early (weeks or months, who knows), and they still have to work out the copyright kinks, GDPR, etc.

until the chronological sorting

Until this happens it's worthless to me. Logged on, looked around and... yeah, this kinda sucks. I'd rather have an empty timeline, based on who I follow in chronological order than a stripped down version of FB.

Holler at me when it's done. I don't give even the smallest of shits about any influencers and even less about some randos' lunch or dinner.

News. I want breaking news in the order it has been received. That's it.

Yeesh. He's not taking this well.

Question: Is there a limit to the number of new follows you can search for in a specific amount of time. I can't search for additional accounts right now other than what gets automatically loaded.

As for "technical reasons" why twitter is declining (and I am looking for an alternative).

The promoted ads, every 4 or 5 tweets, by absolute bottom bin unappealing companies, are outrageous.   I just scrolled thru the app, 4 ads in 20 tweets, some candle company you can add a picture of your cat,  some weird mattress company, some Automotive company that offers "appearance protection" for your car, and some activewear company I've never heard of.    It is fucking ridiculous how many promoted ads there are, it is fully 1/5 of the platform/experience now.    Which of course is Elon's fault for running off the big advertisers, by being a piece of shit, now he has to take on these tiny companies with little ad budget.

Then there is the whole buy a blue checkmark.  Now Elon's "town square" is basically Texags or SECRant's political board.   Click on any topic and boom, you are overrun by boosted accounts that are screaming about absolute BS.   It is as much a town square as Elon is sane.   It is awful.    And Elon is actively encouraging that (for $8 a month).

Then there are the bots.   EVERY SINGLE post from any account with more than say 10K followers, is littered with these gambling and porn bots.   TOWN SQUARE!

G T F O

Speaking ads, here is a quick rundown on what was served up every 5 or 6 tweets

Not anymore. My old boss was on Twitter and day traded on his work computer. I assumed he wouldn’t bat an eye at a little surly use if it ever came up.

The guy crushed it on Elon’s Twitter acquisition. Elon paid for his new pool and backyard. When Elon added “chief twit” to his Twitter bio, my boss ran into my office yelling “it’s happening” like Michael Scott because he knew he’d crushed it on his trades.
I didn’t get in until the final week but still made a couple grand just buying options that printed when the deal closed.

Talking to a friend who is involved in social media stuff (on the technical/analytics side), and he said the reason for them being cagey about future plans/Europe, is because by the end of this year, there will be European regulations in effect that prevent companies from requiring somebody to sign up for say Instagram, in order to have a Threads account. Different platforms can operate together, but registration will need to be independent of one another. Basically, Meta wants that sorted out before they offer it to the EU, since they'd have to remove the Instagram requirement no matter what.

So, for those of you who don't want Instagram, good news?

He said the Fediverse stuff is only because Meta is using it to avoid anti-trust issues - basically, by tying Threads into the Fediverse, Meta can say "hey, nobody is locked in, at any time a Threads user can take their profile and their data and their followers' list and with the click of a few buttons, migrate over to Mastodon or whatever.

Ah interesting all around, but I was wondering why specifically they would entertain connecting to the fediverse. It’s a cool idea that sounds generally good/etc but it seemed like only potential negatives for meta. But, that makes sense.

Meta knows most people will never consider moving off of Threads, but having that option in there definitely boosts their "hey, you're not locked in!" claims for the regulators.

Imagine having your posts consistently liked by a guy working on his dozenth ban, and another guy is who is a confirmed Palestinian who is also a white nationalist, who also wants a Christian theocracy, and who also followed the tenets of his religion by blowing up his marriage in favor of multiple drug fueled orgies with other dudes, nttiawwt. Unless you’re married to a woman and think taking meth to fuck other dudes for days at a time is wrong.

Anyway, imagine that  being your cheering section and thinking that you’re onto something.

And who shows up to the wrong bar for a happy hour and then bitches out the others for not being there.
