I guess we should count ourselves lucky it wasn't remade with Melissa McCarthy as Willy Wonka.

She’s the stunt double for Violet when she turns into a blueberry.

Surely we can wedge Awkwafina in here somehow.

They cleverly hid in the marketing that this is actually a musical. We'll go see it at some point this holiday season.

That's a no go for me unless it's funny like The Producers.

It's not just me that's anti huge CGI, right? Can't put by finger on it, but when they show these big vista scenes where the only thing real is the actor, I don't like it.

Ah, the old "Paint Your Wagon" play book.

It's at best tolerable if you aren't a musicals fan.   I sat through it with my wife, who is.   Seemed like it would be more appealing to kids 8-12.   Would have been more entertaining for me if it was 80% Hugh Grant instead of 20% since the talent factor goes way up whenever he appears.

You mean a musical, like the original. Yeah, never saw that coming.

I that it was way better than the Depp version and on a scale of Depp to Wilder, closer to Wilder.

Dahl hated the Wilder version because he said it didn’t have the tone of the book. The Depp version followed the source material more closely

That's a pretty fabulous cast riding that gravy train. They'll elevate the material which brings me to one of my biggest dislikes in many movies that rely on dramatization rather than action: overwhelming musical scores.

Filmmakers don't trust (or are not allowed to trust) material interpretted by even the best actors of the day. The best emotions generated by a movie are those that are drawn from the audience from an actor's interpretation which touches something inside the viewer. It's akin to the best jokes being the ones where the listener has to put together the pieces in their head.

I first noticed this heavy-handed use of music employed by Ron Howard although I'm sure he didn't originate it. The music imposes a feeling on the viewer even when the viewer doesn't need it. In the trailer above, wonder is cued by swelling music, comedy by stocatto music, and the reference to the usual folderol about dreams by a poignant note. All overdone.

I'm not saying get rid of musical scores. Just stop hammering me with them. But restraint in any moment of a big movie is rarely to be found outside of Nolan or a few others who have both control and skill. Michael Mann is another favorite, of course. The music in Last of the Mohicans is brilliant and applied perfectly.

Thus ends another round of Bloviations with Roma.

Of all the full fucking regard posts I’ve ever read on the internet….this was one of them.

Roald Dahl was an asshole.

Saw it today. It’s a cute, professionally made family film. Nothing surprising or revelatory, but a decent enough way to spend a couple hours. The songs were good but we’re not going to be listening to the soundtrack 3 months from now or anything like that. They should not have used “Pure Imagination” but I get why they did.

That said, I don’t get Timothee Chalamet. He has negative charisma. He’s both miscast and doesn’t do a particularly good job. Not like, distractingly bad but I just kept asking myself out of all the actors in the world, what compelled them to pick Timothee Chalamet? He and Awkwafina must share the best agent in the business.

I took the whole crew plus grandkids to this.  I liked it. Plenty of moments made me actually laugh, it was well directed with good acting and music.  It’s for sure family fare but a high point.

Also Hugh Grant as an Oompa Loompa killed it.

Saw it with the kids the other day and really really liked it. It gives a few homages to the original, but I liked how overall its basically its own movie. Which was the right call, since the original has a heavy Clockwork Orange vibe and some aspects that are otherwise pretty fuckin weird for a kids movie. In that context, I thought Chalamet was great. Super fun family movie, as mentioned there are some legit laugh out loud moments, and just really well done.

Just finished watching it and really enjoyed it. An excellent prequel. Lots of catchy songs and they really fit the movie/story unlike most musicals. I came for the Oompa Loompa, I stayed for the love.

Had to kill some time solo parenting with the kids (7 and almost 5) this past weekend and took them.  They loved it.  Already asking to buy it on streaming (which apparently you can).  I had zero expectations so going in from that perspective enjoyed it as well.  I thought it was really well done overall.

We saw it last night. We enjoyed it. Another origin story we didn't really need but it did its job to entertain us for a few hours. Doubt I ever watch it again though. Much better than the remake they did in 2005 with Johnny Depp. That was terrible.

Same. I couldn’t name any of the actors/actresses (the same could be said for most porn parodies) and I might not watch it again, but I’m sure some  clips will pop up on Pornhub.

Need to watch the new one with Chalamet.

Saw it was on Max so started watching it. The best thing I can say is that I was so bored I actually started getting some work done around the house.
