Hey, maybe he just got tired of normal food in SK, and was craving dirt, worms and rats.

When you want bird, on a Tuesday, you go to North Korea.  Bird day is best day

Will be interested to hear the more complete story.  If there are really guards 20 yards away from the border during tours this soldier is a dumbass or there is something more to this incident.

I’m sure it’s changed since then, there’s a 15 yr old video of when VICE creator shane smith did his North Korea tour. When he was at the DMZ on the South Korean side, there were NK guards right on the border. Hell they just stand there and stare. When he did get to the NK side of the DMZ it was in a barracks where 99% of the world would only be able to get into NK was in that building….unless you for whatever reason flew to Pyongyang.

So this moron probably ends up like that Otto dude

This will probably delay his promotion to PFC.  And I'm sure that Corporal is right out.

NORK's will make him a Field Marshall and then end his shit with a 23MM.

This is after he gives over all the secrets an E-2 has. Ya know, how to assemble an M-4.

BBC reporting the soldier was facing disciplinary issues. Guess it was serious if he chose NORK Jails over Leavenworth.

This shit is going to get interesting. This is the best media I have seen on it.

the CNN article looks like it has been updated

A US soldier who crossed the demarcation line into North Korea had been facing disciplinary action by the US military and was set to be sent back to the United States, according to a US defense official.

The service member is a junior enlisted soldier who was assigned to US Forces Korea, the official said, adding that he had been on the Joint Security Area (JSA) tour as a civilian. US Forces Korea spokesperson Col. Isaac Taylor said on Tuesday that a US soldier “willfully and without authorization” crossed the line during a JSA tour.

“We believe he is currently in [Democratic People’s Republic of Korea] custody and are working with our [Korean People’s Army] counterparts to resolve this incident,” Taylor said in a statement.

There was no indication the soldier was trying to defect, a separate US official said.

The prospect of a US soldier being held in North Korean military custody comes at a time of fraught diplomacy and rising military tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

“A U.S. National on a JSA orientation tour crossed, without authorization, the Military Demarcation Line into the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK). We believe he is currently in DPRK custody and are working with our KPA counterparts to resolve this incident,” the UNC said.

A US official told CNN the soldier appeared to cross the line into voluntarily. US officials say they are waiting to confirm his identity until his next of kin is notified.

So how the fuck did he book a tour to the DMZ and run across the border?

Well MP's do kind of suck, so there is that. But if his crime was big enough to send him home I would think CID was involved.

Someone is getting demoted, and it is not just the E-2.

it's actually pretty easy to get into NK even for Americans* and you don't have to fly.  you can cross by rail, car, or even walk.

So the dude got into a fight, fought the Korean Police, spent time in their jails and then this. MP's take him to the airport and boogied for some bulgogi and kimchi, allowing him to LEAVE the airport. Dude has balls.

From BBC.

After his release, he was placed under military observation for about a week in South Korea.

He was escorted to the airport in Incheon, near Seoul, for a flight back to the United States, where he was to face disciplinary action.

But he did not board the plane. The Korea Times, quoting an airport official, said he arrived at the boarding gate alone as military police officers were not allowed to accompany him all the way to the plane.

At the gate, he reportedly approached an American Airlines official and claimed his passport had gone missing. An airline employee then escorted him out of the departures area.

After parting ways with his escort, he is reported to have left the terminal to embark on a tour of the Demilitarised Zone, or DMZ, between North and South Korea, where foreigners can visit via tour companies.

It is not clear how PV2 King managed to get on one of these tours, as it usually takes between three days and a week for an individual to be authorised on one of these trips, which are usually closely monitored.

An eyewitness on the same border tour described hearing the soldier laughing loudly before making a run across the border.

The United Nations Command, which operates the DMZ, said it believed the soldier was now in custody of the North. A senior US commander said there had been no contact with the soldier and the incident was being investigated by US Forces Korea.

Seems like a straight-shooter, with upper management written all over him.

"Hey, I'm about to face discipline, and possibly discharge from the army, because I had a fight.  Instead of that....I'll go to North Korea."  That seems like a great call.

Someone should have had him read "The orphan master's son" before he pulled this stunt.  He's not going to love the spa room at the DPNK Hilton.

Get Bill Richardson on the line stat if the worm is preoccupied.

so the net, net from this is going forward, anytime we send a military member back to the US for discipline, we are gonna have to splurge for 2 or even 3 tickets as their MP escorts will have to take the flight with the "prisoner'.

It depends on how long this policy of escorting a bad apple to the airport and once getting them through security ending the assignment has been going on.  If its new, whatever officer came up with it might get in trouble as this explanation actually seems like a foreseeable "whats the worst thing that could happen if we dont escort him on the plane?" action.

I gotta hand it to this clown.   telling the gate agent "oops lost my passport" was a sure-fire way to get escorted out of the airport.

Because the airline that allows an ineligible flier (for whatever reason) on a international flight that is denied entry to the arriving country is responsible for covering the return journey.

So basically the airport employees are told to be hyper vigilant if a passport issue arises.  And this moron took advantage.

that being said, running to NK vs being kicked out of the army, or even in prison for some time seems like an extreme over reach.

pretty sure we are gonna find out this dude's elevator doesnt go to the top floor.

First, I think we did already find out.

But he's about to really find out.

All he did was get in a fight in Korea? He didn't kill anyone or steal thousands of top secret documents and hide them in his Korean golf resort after leading a failed coup attempt to become Korea's dictator?

I mean, those are the only two legitimate reasons why an American should run to NK

I'm assuming it was the civilian police - from what friends have said, if he got in a fight with South Korean MPs, he would be lucky to walk within a week.

He was probably headed for a dishonorable or general discharge and maybe a year or two in Leavenworth (and maybe not even that).  Would like to know more about the charges, because if they were going to discharge him, there was more than just a single fight.

He was not even a PFC, which makes me wonder, since you can make PFC sleepwalking.

I've been on a few flights with deportees on board. why couldn't this guy's passport been handed directly to the airline by his mp escort as I've seen it done before?

When I was in, military personnel traveling with orders didn't need a passport.

Yeah, it was civilian police he got into the tussle with, but I am bet our MP's were escorting him to the flight.
