Way to ignore my entire post completely and resorting to "Guy I hate agrees with your post" as your only defense. Shitposting.

Yes, Crime is down. Crime is down in Houston, and yet I sure as shit don't hear about that, in fact, from what I hear it's a nightmare hellscape. If you want to show me statistics that crime in Memphis is way fucking down, then by all means, correct his fucking ass and call him a fucking liar and cite your sources. I'm guessing you're too lazy to do that and will resort to another lame defense.

You're a better poster than this, man.

You seem unfamiliar with texzilla as a poster. He is generally dumb and wrong.

That’s cute you think the media that sells fear porn is going to tell you crime is down. That doesn’t sell or get eyeballs.

Take the L, dude. You’re embarrassing yourself here. Turn off Fox News

Yeah, I can't say I disagree with a lot of what's written above.

BTW, if you're forced to live in Katy, why wouldn't you pick a house with this backyard oasis?

4527 Valley Rill Rd

Again, I can easily trump that with an east coast or California property.  Y'all got it good if it's just housing!!

Meh. I understand the sentiment, but I grew up out there and my two brothers and I are all Longhorns.

Oh I'm familiar with the area, wife is from there and parents still live there. There are plenty of UT, UH, LSU, wherever else grads flying under the radar.

You just wouldn't know it looking/listening around.

You could BUT then you could show me what is within reasonable reach on the west coast.  In Katy, you can visit sunny Brookshire or Sealy... maybe Columbus.  Oh... hey, there's Surfside and Galveston.  Now how about the west coast?  Yes, I'd live in a smaller place to have access to more nature.

I moved a lot as a kid. My dad was always willing to pick up and transplant us to wherever his next promotion took him.

I used to love the fact that my wife and I did things differently. We settled in one spot, started a family, and grew roots into the community. I loved that our kids spent their entire childhood in one city, not having to start over every few years.  I loved that we have deep, long term friendships here with work colleagues, parents whose kids went to elementary school or played sports with our kids, neighbors, etc. I loved that my career was locally focused and that I have deep, established ties to my professional community.

Now it all feels like a trap. All those deep ties bind us to a state that grows more hostile, stupider, and hotter with every passing year.

Pat Green is the worst fucking Texan in our history and that list includes Charles Whitman.  He is an out and out piece of human shit.  He fucked up Willie Nelson's 4th Picnic 20 years ago, which also spoiled a Grateful Dead Show.  Everything about Pat Green blows donkey balls.  Everybody who has ever bought a Pat Green album, along with Pat himself, should die in a fire before Willie passes away.  Fuck Pat Green and anybody with that stupid fucking sticker on their "not-really-off-road" truck and anybody that clicks "like" to his online videos should be castrated and shot.

A whole lot of this.  I am multi-generation Texan, and have loved Texas my whole life.

My career is deeply, inextricably tied to Texas.  There is no market for a Texas trial lawyer with a Texas client base in pretty much any market other than within Texas.  Born here.  Two degrees from here.  Built my profession, friend network, and life here.

Which feels more and more like I tied myself to a boulder that got tossed over the side of a ship and is plummeting into the abyss.  It only gets worse, and I'm along for the ride.  Over the last 10 years or so, Texas has made a concerted effort not just to stop improving (slowly, but improving...more educated, diversifying economy, etc.)...but to purposefully get WORSE.  The boulder now plummets towards the bottom, picking up speed.

Eventually, we'll just cut those ropes and make the move.  We've proven that we can make friends anywhere.  We'll likely end up somewhere at/near where at least one of our kids ends up.  Which almost certainly will not be in Texas.

Which fucking sucks.  This is my fucking state.  My home.  It's dirt that my family has literally bled on and for.  I can smell it and taste it in my dreams, even.  But the current trajectory is undeniable, unsustainable, and I'm not here for it.

My tentative plan is to move elsewhere and change careers, hopefully to something in the unfucking-this-country-from-the-effects-of-rightwing-bullshit business.

If you piled tenure on top of that, you have described me.

I filed my retirement letter yesterday for 8/2024, and I plan to be gone before that.

That was not the Grateful Dead, it was The Dead (Jerry was dead).  And Pat didn't fuck up their show, The Dead did.  They played Space for (what seemed like) 40 minutes at a country show.  I was there.  I apologized to Phil and Bob  for Austin booing them off. They should have played the hits at a show like that.  Every redneck wanted to see Pat and Toby singing about beers and beer drinking horses.

When I have to listen to people rant on about being this number or that number generation Texan, I roll my eyes.  If the one thing you had absolutely no control over is the proudest part of your life narrative, it's actually not the bragging point you think it is.  It's actually rather sad.  The state your mom extracted your ugly ass from her vagina is not a bullet point on your resume, it's just a coincidence.

If you have built a business or craft or client base specific to Texas, and can't really move it easily...that's tough.  I get it.  It's the nature of those of us in credentialed lines of work.

But having to listen to people drone on and on about "I'm 7th generation this.  My dove lease is here.  I got mineral rights there.  We have this last name and this connection and that network to that.  And blah, fucking blah, fucking blah."  Who gives a flying fuck what your great grandparents did, what are you doing for your community today?  And what is on the agenda for tomorrow?

And I look at folks I know and respect like BrisketTexan.  He's got ties, I got ties, we all got ties to the yesteryear of Texas.  But the shit folks like him get up and do every fucking week for the people of this state-be it education, philanthropy, charity, mentorship, etc.  When folks like him tap out and move.  And then lesser folks like me follow them.  This state is proper fucked.  No "my roots go back super duper far so we're gonna done save this Republic" isn't gonna do shit.  10 Briskets leave, 1000 Lobos leave.  Nothing is gonna save this backwards ass Republic from the horrors that await it.  Nobody gives a shit where you shot deer with your grandfather.  When they crush our health care system, we're generating new and exciting ways to punish women and people of color, we're making stupidity a point of pride, our tax system gets dumber each year, no infrastructure, one fucking idiotic leader after another and we can't stop thumping our chests.  The smart people area already leaving.  When the legacy Texans who actually serve this state beyond just bragging about how far back their family goes...when they leave---this place is just a bigger Mississippi.  Keep it up morons.

So the 17th song in their setlist caused Pat Green to go long 2 hours prior to that?  How does time work in your dimension?  I know the incarnation was "The Dead"..........I toured with 'em enough, I can call 'em whatever the fuck I want to.  You have 4 of the members and play 15 of their songs, Imma call you the Grateful Dead.  Speaking of Dead, Pat Green sucks and should be deceased.

The best French restaurant I ever ate at was in East Memphis. I have not been to French Laundry.

Like all of you, we are also weighing options to get out of Texas. Sell our house at a high and find some cheaper, better place to live maybe. It just seems so hard.

You can find good real-deal grub in unexpected places.  One of the best italian restaurants I've ever eaten at -- and I mean, simple, not pretentious, down-home italian -- is Frankie's Pizza and Pasta.  In.....Mexia.  It's in the old DQ, run by an albanian immigrant.  Highly recommend.

You can get some amazing spreads on the coast in Oregon. Right on the beach. Probably for the same price as most Austin homes.

Gorgeous up there.  Kind of cold though.  But I love it.

But alas, looks like mighty Dallas is about to take away the west coasts only advantage:

Beaches planned for Midlothian subdivision

Yeah, I was really surprised by the Mexican meal we had in Welches, Oregon... just down the street from Mt. Hood Village.  Expected hot garbage but the tacos were legit and the margaritas were excellent.

I'm guilty of stopping for a Big O's Beer or whatever it was called at George's in Waco in 1999.

Oh, I think we're all guilty of that and no shame in it.  I had no idea that place existed, only drove through Waco a number of times.  And then a guy who think played backup QB at Baylor, was a regular at Wheeler's LFZ tailgates in the very early 2000's.  We got to be friends and he insisted I stop in there at some point.  I think we were up there for a baseball series (back when it was Friday in Waco and Sat/Sun in Austin and vice-versa).  Food was for shit, but giant cheap beers and eye candy made it worth the stop.  Ended up making it a ritual for a few years.  Haven't been in probably over a decade, at least.

But while I still like Austin in some ways, and could certainly see us living in Fort Worth if we had to move in the state to another big city...I just cannot imagine living in a place like Waco.  I mean, I  could do small town  Texas, or coastal living or out in Marfa/Marathon, even Midland- Odessa for work. But some mid-size dump just to "stay in Texas" like Waco or Beaumont or Tyler or Wichita Falls.  I don't know how the fuck some people do that.
