You can tell Ikard wants to say a whole lots of things about Littrell, but is eating them.  They gave themselves hope before the game because they cherry picked 3-4 busted plays by the Texas defense and convinced themselves OU could take advantage of them.  I wonder if Teddy still thinks Hill avoids contact?

I actually want to give some credit to these Sooner fuck 9.95ers. They had their blinders on with the squeak by wins and "good" loss to Tennessee, but they finally see the writing on the wall. This team is dogshit and their program has fallen HARD very quickly.

With the portal and NIL, it doesn't have to be a long process for a bluebood to bounce back. But OU is in a baaaad spot. May it continue for as long as possible.

This whole thing is rather great. They are just despondent.

I love it. They are crushed and don't see a future that improves.  It's gotta hurt to acknowledge the gap in execution, talent and coaching.  It reminds me of a dark decade and makes the sooner tears better.  Can't wait to see the Georgia follow-up radio shows next week!

He apparently pulled their best OL for the rest of the game after he had a relatively minor mistake.  Only played 20 something snaps.

Thats what I love about the Venables staff. They act like there are still barriers to player movement.

NIL is probably the worst thing that could have happened to the dirt burglars.   Similar to when Neb left Big 12.

it is always about the Jimmie's and Joe's but coaching will matter more now because you have to figure out how to integrate brand new players every year.

I don't know how many of their problems are strictly NIL related. Their defense is fine and they have talented players there. And they are well coached for the most part on that side of the ball.

They just took a blowtorch to entire offensive side of the ball. I don't know if it was a poor allocation of NIL resources or just a complete fuck up self-evaluating their talent. They did more to screw over their QB position this offseason than Lincoln Riley ever did. They had a whole year to look at Jackson Arnold and decided to hitch their wagon to him instead of doing whatever they needed to keep Gabriel or add some depth in the portal. The offensive line room was horribly, grossly mismanaged. Their best RB from last year is now tearing it up at Wisconsin. He was a fucking walk-on. Did Wisconsin money whip him or did OU just never offer him a scholarship? I honestly don't know. I give them a bit of a pass on WR because of the injuries, but it's not like Pettaway and Thompson weren't good enough to get scholarships from Texas.

I admit it is an early prediction.  Let's just say one of their big advantages is now gone.

I think their single biggest problem is that their program was extremely successful for almost a quarter of a century, and one of its pillars was that they would say and do what was needed to recruit well, and once those players were enrolled, the program was extremely demanding of them. Schmitty, Stoops, Venables, all those extreme hardasses could be as tough as they wanted or needed to be, because there were barriers to player movement. They could make a guy swallow the vomit from an over exertion. They could have a culture where a player was considered a pussy if he sought treatment for an injury rather than play through it in a big game. That all made the football better at OU.

Their success in developing players was enviable, and the ones that made it to the NFL weren’t going to claim, but the process was brutal. Do you think Mancini, fired at KU for being abusive to players, was softer at OU? Hell, no.

So, that worked for over 20 years, but now the barriers to player movement are gone. All of us in the regular workforce know that Gen Z has a limit to how much bullshit they will put up with (to their credit), and that’s a problem for Venables.

Venables made his bones in a system where the solution to performance problems was to grind harder and demand more. His player management toolset has one tool: a ratchet set to tighten only, and not loosen.

Yes, NIL is a problem. What are they going to do when the key players that they want to build on explore opportunities elsewhere? Is Venables ready to develop soft skills? Is that program?

I’ve read that, in the NFL, players won’t put up with abusive, hardass coaches (see Urban Meyer). They say the best NFL coaches are firm, but good communicators, that players will respond to demands from a coach that is honest with them, lets them know where they stand and where they are going. That sounds like Sark. Does that sound like Venables, or any others off the Stoops tree?

It absolutely fucking does not sound like Sarkisian. At all.

Forde made an astute comment this morning on one of the Sirius xm shows, about how OU fucked themselves by only taking 4 oline recruits a couple of years back and they have paid for it this year. Don’t know if it is true, but certainly hope the spiral is hard to fix.

I kind of enjoyed watching both of them break down prior and our game. I love the detail they go in on some of the plays and such. Fuck em both but it's educational.

I don't understand how the QB situation and the talent evaluation.  They recruited well so NIL likely isn't the problem.  (Arnold and Hawkins were both blue chip recruits.)  Arnold obviously isn't very good for some reason and they had an entire year with him to asses that.  So then Lebby leaves and they then decide to go balls deep with Arnold.  They hired the OC he wanted to run the offense he wanted.  This wasn't some big time recruit they made promises to.  This was a guy already on the roster and if I remember right, there were stories over the summer that he just wasn't very good in practice.

Then you have them making a terrible OC hire to add on.

Venables made the same mistake the OU fans did. The main reason that touted young QBs as inexperienced as Arnold (Bradford, Williams) worked out is that they were:

1. Exceptionally talented

2. Exceptionally well coached

The reason that Venables and OU fans expected Arnold to work out are:

1. He wears the OU uniform (just like Bradford and Williams)

2. They really need him to.
A five star rating is an assessment of talent, not a definition of talent

Fans are expected to be idiots like that. It’s malpractice for coaches to.

The playing field is, at best, level, for them now.  They used to have an advantage, which we tried to counter with education/Austin, but the market is now free to do what the market does.  IMHO, that is not good for dirt burglar but we will see.

Yeah, talent assessment is a core function of the job of a coach.  It's understandable for OU fans to think Arnold would be good.  The coaches saw him every day for a year and still made the decisions they made.

they made a major mistake in promoting Littrel.

Lebby was already hated at OU for his shitty offense, and he was the brains of the offense. He knew he was hated, and so he took the first ride out of there to MSU

Venables decided to promote within for some consistency, its not wrong when the offense is working well but DG was putting a lot of work in to make things work. Littrel is the shitty version of Lebby who architected their offense. Now that its not working he doens't know how to fix it, and they having some freshman at QB who dont have the experience either and a new offensive line who also doesn't have the depth or experience to cover deficiencies.

We've seen how this works out with Charlie Strong, and its spectacularly bad. With the portal era its possible to fix the issue more quickly but these are not quick fixes. You also need a name at OC to attract people.

We again saw this with Charlie Strong, and we had to fly our AD to fucking nowhere's ville to entice some shitty OC to even take the job , who was over paid, and fired a year later when we fired Strong.

What I'm hoping to see is a similar set of issues, we see Venables fired next year after another shitty year and OU really stuck in a hard place trying to figure out what to do next combining with churning through Offensive Coaches and Offense Schemes that really sets back the OU offense for years.

Ian Boyd wrote on IT that the Arnold camp wanted Littrell as OC. Take it for what it’s worth.

Either way, Venables owns the decision.

Granted that was a different OC and scheme. Arnold is probably a decent fit for the Veer and Shoot that Lebby runs. What he is not a good fit for is this quasi Air Raid/Veer and shoot scheme that Littrell has never called and Venables is forcing on him.

Lebby is a giant piece of shit, but he's a very good OC.

2019 - UCF (19th OFEI)

2020 - Ole Miss (8th)

2021 - Ole Miss (14th)

2022 - OU (24th) - missing Gabriel half the season

2023 - OU (9th)

2024 - MSU (52nd) * OU (59th)

The Briles offense is perfect for running up stats when playing shitty competition, but has clearly been susceptible against real defenses now that it's been around for a while. Huepel and Kiffin have found out. I hope big programs continue to run it.
