Tell me about ou

The Sooners are having a big, big sad after Mizzou, and it's probably because reality is setting in. After listening to some of their shows, a majority clearly seem to be done with Venables. The problem is that his buyout is $44 million, and they really don't have the resources to cover that as well as compete in NIL. Financially they're stuck for next year, and on top of that they're going to have to throw a lot of money to get a decent OC, like Texas did toward the end of Strong's tenure.

It seems pretty clear that in this new era, starting from behind and facing a daunting schedule again next year, OU will most likely find its level in the mid- to lower-tier of the SEC for a long time. The following team all have much better financial, recruiting, or geography advantages than OU:

Texas

Texas A&M

LSU

Alabama

Georgia

Florida

Tennessee

You would then put OU in the next tier with the likes of: Missouri, Arkansas, Auburn, and Mississippi. OU has history on its side, but as we've seen with Nebraska, that only goes so far. In the SEC they are not a centrally located team like they were in the Big 8 or Big 12, but rather they're on the periphery like Missouri. What we saw last night is probably they're future, fighting the Missouris of the world to be on the cusp of the top 25. I'm here for it.

It's a code red situation in Norman. Just talked to a Sooner friend and they are passing around the Augie locker room video on social media to rile themselves up even more. It's not just Venables. Their AD is understandably coming under fire too.

Joe C is prolly one of the best and most respected AD's in the country.  Venables was a reasonably good hire at the time.  With Moser and the men's basketball, I don't know if that program is salvageable at this point.  There is only so much basketball fan demand in the state and once the Thunder showed up and started doing well, the fan support of both programs basically got cut in half.  Moving out of the Big 12 will help OU but you're still playing in front of 1/4 full arenas.

They are top tier in almost every other sport.

Wrong.

They emotionally reacted to being left at the altar by Lincoln Riley, and gravitated toward an older coach with no HC experience because they knew he loved OU and would be loyal. It was a shortsighted and reactionary hire and they are getting burned.

In the end, to the people that matter, football has to be good. They don't want to be known as a softball school. And this is way more embarrassing for them as a member in the SEC now.

I think BV gets another year simply because they're not going to want to pay for both the buyout and whatever it would take to lure another staff to Norman. No matter what Florida's AD said earlier this week, everyone knows that Napier is dead man walking. Lincoln Riley is on the hot seat. Would they want to get into a bidding war for Cignetti?

They can only get so much mileage from their softball team's dynasty.

Wondering if Bedenbaugh will be the scapegoat. Also BV will probably get another year due to the injuries to the WR.

We can only hope Castiglione has to fly with Venables to some middling AAC school to convince their OC to take their job.

That was the lowest point for us. My god.

And we were so excited.   Hey the university president cares enough to get on a plane to go help the coach get a coordinator. We're awesome!!!

Completely ignoring the obvious fact that a program that is not circling the drain does not need to do that to convince a g5 coordinator to accept boatloads of cash.

This board went full aggy.  You never go full aggy

They're gonna get destroyed next weekend by Alabama and they're definitely not beating LSU in Baton Rouge the following weekend. 5-7 here they come! Venables really is their modern day Charlie Strong.

2 weeks to prepare for Bama game since this is the bye week for blOU.  Things will likely quiet down a little bit from their fans until after the Bama game...

After that, it may go ballistic ???

I want to believe this, I really do, but I just think they care way too much to fall to the second tier for good. And as long as the Scoop/Stack is still producing they should have decent amount of NIL money.

Their problem currently is that they have a cheese dick version of Charlie Strong as their HC. If they can fix that problem (and I suspect they will), I still think they get their share of 4-star guys from places like Wichita, Plano, KC, Denver, etc. They’re still a brand, it’s just that they won’t be cruising the Big 12 every year and back-dooring into national championship games… so more of a regional brand.

They’ll be competitive, but at the same time be our little bitch for the foreseeable future.

That would actually be the best possible outcome. Good enough for a reliable quality win, not good enough to win shit except the gator bowl or some non-playoff bowl like that.

49ers Shanahan? The Texas alum that has told everyone who will listen he never wants to coach in college?

Yeah, that was a head-scratcher.

If Cignetti is really the next hot rising star and is ready to cash in his success at Indiana, I can see him viewing OU as an attractive job, and maybe OU won't have much competition.  Is USC going to shitcan Riley?  I don't think so.  FSU probably gives Norvell a pass coming off 10-3 and 13-1 seasons, and even if they fire him I don't think their financial position is any better than OU's.  Cignetti is a West Virginia alum, but I don't see that as an attractive job over OU.  Who else would be OU's competition, and who are other candidates?  Cignetti end up falling in OU's lap.
