Yeah, that was a head-scratcher.

If Cignetti is really the next hot rising star and is ready to cash in his success at Indiana, I can see him viewing OU as an attractive job, and maybe OU won't have much competition.  Is USC going to shitcan Riley?  I don't think so.  FSU probably gives Norvell a pass coming off 10-3 and 13-1 seasons, and even if they fire him I don't think their financial position is any better than OU's.  Cignetti is a West Virginia alum, but I don't see that as an attractive job over OU.  Who else would be OU's competition, and who are other candidates?  Cignetti end up falling in OU's lap.

One other factor with Cignetti - he's 63. His career's been a slow burn. If he wants a blueblood job he doesn't have time to give IU three years, he needs to take it now. Works in OU's favor.

Good point.  He's certainly no spring chicken, but 63 can still be relatively young for this game.

I do think one potential negative against Cignetti is the current NIL/transfer landscape of college football.  He's been at a big conference program for less than one full season, and he didn't have to deal with roster management on the NIL/portal level at places like James Madison and Elon.  Recruiting is one thing -- it's relating to players and their families and selling them on your program, playing time, etc.  But it might cause OU some hesitation to hire a guy with no significant experience in what is now a significant part of a head coaches responsibilities.  And it's not like Venables has shown that roster/portal management is a strength for him.

49ers Shanahan? The Texas alum that has told everyone who will listen he never wants to coach in college?

Indiana’s Offensive Coordinator is named Mike Shanahan.

Disappointed. You usually know these things.

Baller move.  Pass on the head coach and hire the guy with no head coaching experience and one year of OC experience at the power conference level.  OU must do this.

I guess I could have been more clear. They have been on staff together since 2016. I want both of them.

I could watch this 10 times and find a different problem each time and laugh.  It might be the worst designed play in the history of college football.  They do a jet sweet sweep with their slow TE and use their small, non blocking RB as a lead blocker.  However, watch the pulling RG.  It's like watching the video of little kids playing baseball:

OU Football: Sooners AD and University President State Confidence in Brent Venables - Live Call Ins

The arguments on next OC are great... 😋

Some OC names they are throwing out:

  • Ben Arbuckle + Wash St QB
  • Joe Craddock + Tulane QB
  • Casey Woods + Smu QB
  • Will Stein  (Oregon)
  • Shanahan (Indy)
  • Dan Mullen
  • Brennan Marion

Now they are discussing whether they should have stayed in the B12 instead of going to SEC  😋

They're gonna get destroyed next weekend by Alabama and they're definitely not beating LSU in Baton Rouge the following weekend. 5-7 here they come! Venables really is their modern day Charlie Strong.

0U (The Harvard of the Mobile Home Parks) can still qualify under the Academic Progress Rate Rule that lets 5 win teams in. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Kidding! Even I can’t say that with a straight face.
One of our neighbor’s kids went to 0U for a hot minute and left because “it was easier than high school”.

OU has been so good for so long that their admin is going to really struggle accepting that they made a hire that isn't going to work out.  They are also still so pissed at Riley that they are going to cling to "but the defense is so much better" for way too long.

Indiana has ~15 seniors and ~20 transfers on its 2-deep.  9 of those transfers are from JMU, and most of those are seniors.  Other transfers are from Ohio (not St), Wake Forest, Old Dominion, Texas Tech.  He's put together a good team and he's a good coach.  Can he do that in another place?

Interesting.  So he has some experience with the portal.  Whether he can forage the portal with the big boys remains to be seen.

The AD gave Venables his vote of confidence, so Cignetti to OU in the offseason is a moo point.  Too bad.  I think he'll wind up with a better gig somewhere at the end of the season.

That guy on the left in that video always sounds like he just discovered that someone pissed in not only his cheerios, but all the cheerios in the world, and he's going to have to learn how to eat them that way.  I can't get enough of how pissed off he always is.  MOAR!!

Joey Tribbiani?

Seems a good recipe when you play a shit non-conf schedule and miss every current good B1G program except Ohio State - no Oregon and no Penn St

Congrats, your JMU guys and your cast offs from Ohio, Wake and Tech beat up on UCLA, Maryland, Northwestern, Nebraska, Washington, Michigan State, a bad Michigan team (who still could have beat you) and then you get Ohio State and Purdue.

If he gets his doors blown off by Ohio State, I personally will think he got lucky with a craptastic B1G schedule.

It is fun listening to the SoonerScoop podcast, as they discuss the financial challenges facing them. “We’re not Texas! We’re not even Texas A&M!”

They expect their program to perform at a certain level, because it always has.
