What a day for OU

so word is Nagy told him that he needed to take a paycut... basically his production didn't merit the money he was making.. so he is walking away.

They may be right.  He did jack shit last year.

Acquiring a rep for (1) getting lackluster performance out of blue chip recruits and (2) cutting second-year NIL to said recruits seems unlikely to help their recruiting or their negotiations for the first year of future NIL deals on other blue chip recruits. I am here for it.

This has more to do with his handlers than anything. They know they can get more than OU is wanting to pony up, and I can’t blame them. It’s a bad look for the football program. My son hangs around a bunch of the kids he grew up with and I’ve been around David a  couple times. He has always been very pleasant to me, but he has some people pulling him in wrong directions.

My man, where are you hearing that he was asking for more money? Sure his family is living off him, that sucks.. However they didn't ask for more, their son was told he was going to take a paycut for not living up to expectations/production as a true freshman..

Never said he asked for more money, I said he can get more. His new contract was incentive based, and that was fine until it wasn’t.

Miami has allegedly tampered with him and offered him $1M. We’ll see if there’s any truth to that, but that’s how it is being framed on Sooner Illustrated.

One of the alleged “insiders” and several of the moderators are really touting Nagy as a wizard who is going to reshape their whole org into a machine.

Washing machine, maybe. The current set-up looks hilariously dysfunctional. The “GM” reports above the AD. The HC reports to the AD and the AD reports into the same role as the “GM”.

That structure means the HC is absolutely fucked. He’s lost control of personnel evaluation to a wonk who cast out of the NFL personnel world. The guy was in purgatory running an annual bowl camp in Alabama with less than 10 employees and doing his own PR.  That dude now controls who Venables has on staff and the make-up of his roster. He doesn’t even have to meet regularly with Venables or consult with him.

“But ctj, that’s how many NFL orgs work!?!”

The idiotic talking heads on XM 84, including guests from ESPN, Fox, SEC/ACC/Big 10 networks, The Athletic and so on have all convinced themselves of the argument. “OU’s ahead of the curve. This is the way things will be structured at all schools in the future. Look at Stanford as well!”

Maybe. Maybe CFB HC’s are as fungible as NFL HC’s.

I’m not sure I see it that way. There’s way more variance in numerous aspects of CFB that don’t exist in the NFL. One in particular is that the budget for the roster is nowhere near parity across the sport, even in each conference. OU can pat itself on the back about being disciplined and essentially telling Stone to walk with a big pay cut. Do Texas or Georgia have to do the same thing with their freshmen 5 stars going into their sophomore season? No. They do not.

Who is better off by the time the ball kicks off in August?

If fasusi doesn't make an impact this fall... He too at risk for taking a paycut? 👀

Stone was better off getting an injury, he probably would have gotten a raise and his parents an upgraded home.. Or pool.. Worked for Burkes 👀

If you fail to hit the incentive targets, you make less money, that's how contracts work.

He finished his contract for last year. He then renegotiated a contract where his base went down but incentives went way up. Had he hit the incentives he would have made more money. He signed the contract and everything was peachy, his handlers got a couple calls and voila here we are.

One thing is clear- in this era of college football with eight figure roster salary totals, and near unrestricted freedom of movement, Texas has thought through some things, like:

- what to do when a top recruit costs more than you are paying entrenched starters

- what to do when a player performs well but the scale for his position rises dramatically

- what to do when a costly recruit doesn’t produce quickly

that our competitors are working through on the fly. I know nothing of Texas One background, if the primary funders insisted that parameters and protocols be worked out in advance, in a coherent manner.

I bet, though, that the funders of One Oklahoma’s are asking now why it is such a shit show, why they paid nearly a million for 96 snaps that are now going to Miami or similar.

One unlikely person helped Texas figure some things out really quickly at the dawn of all of this stuff. That person? Abraham Lincoln. … No, actually, Lincoln Riley.

Why Lincoln Riley? He tampered directly with Xavier Worthy and offered him $1M that he did not have at that moment in time.  The offer came with less than a day of portal window left.

The Texas end had to figure out really quickly what it could do, wanted to do, needed to do, and how this stuff needed to be proactively sorted in the future.

That doesn’t mean anything is perfect, but a lot of turbulence has already been put behind Texas compared to many other programs.

BTW, in that same cycle, Jordan Addison took the same offer. He’s still waiting to get paid most of that money.

Thanks, that really provides insight. I wonder how much of USC’ struggles come from an organizational dysfunction in this new era (supposedly, Texas has a good rep among players and their agents for coming through on promises, and others have…less good reps).

Similarly, I’ve seen posters wonder why tOSU hired ex Ag AD Bjork as their AD, considering him kind of a clown from his ago days. I think the Buckeyes view it differently- he was AD when Ag football signed (bought) the top recruiting class ever. The Buckeyes care less that the class flameout in failure than that Bjork, at the least, turned a blind eye to football dropping bags or, at the most, ran interference for them as they dropped those bags. That’s the kind of AD tOSU wants.

They realized just what a bad look this was, and fixed it. Meaning- they took money they intended to apply elsewhere and gave it to Stone.

I am now reading that the reduced contract was instituted before Nagy, under the Venables regime, and that Nagy cleaned the mess up, realizing what a black eye this is.

A couple of comments- NIL has verbs few rules, but one rule that exists is that it can’t be performance-based, yet that is exactly what OU gave Stone initially.

For all the complaints the Sooners had about other teams tampering with their roster- Nagy absolutely tampered with the RB, Ott, before the portal opened, and they are all fine operating that way. Ethics, in Soonerland, are situational, as they always have been.

it is almost 20 years since the Sooner Big Red Auto scandal. Stoops got a lot of mileage out of kicking his starting QB, Bomar, and his backup OL off the team as a consequence of getting paid for little work. It never gets mentioned that AD Peterson and his father were also getting (bigger) pay for no work from Big Red, and there were no consequences for them. The truth is- they were kind of ready to move on from Bomar,or at least, they weren’t ready to go to the mat with the NCAA over him.

If Nagy realized it was fucked up, why did Stone have to enter the portal to get it corrected? That seems like something that could be straightened out privately

Here is an article from Sooner Illustrated talking about the transfers they're looking at in the portal. All of these guys are FCS guys. OU is focusing on these types because they're cheap and, allegedly, Nagy thinks he's arbitraging the rest of big time college football because he's a true evaluator and there are diamonds in the rough at the lower level that he's finding.

I've also included a post from one of their established posters where he's more honest about what he's seeing.

Be careful reading this shit because you might OD consuming this much hilarious OU shit in one reading session. Holy shit.

Spoiler

The spring window of the NCAA transfer portal rolls on in the world of college football.

It's still very active, to say the least. Decisions are being made, visits are being taken and there are still new names rolling in.

Daily updates are rolling here at Sooners Illustrated. The latest? That here:

- In our last daily portal notebook, we reported that Oklahoma had reached back out to the camp of Mark Hamper just yesterday. The former Idaho wide receiver who landed at Wisconsin then went back into the portal, has been hearing from OU through the process and is being monitored by the program.

After another point on contact yesterday, Hamper's camp tells Sooners Illustrated they're awaiting furhter word from Oklahoma. There is interest in setting up a visit if OU wants to, but the ball is in the Sooners' court. Hamper visited New Mexico yesterday, he will be at Arizona State today and Cal on Thursday.

- Part of this is Oklahoma honing in on a new receiver target. Last night, the Sooners officially extended an offer to former McNeese pass catcher Jer'Michael Carter.

Carter had been on OU's radar for a bit. But now the Sooners enter a portal recruitment in the middle of its peak.

Carter's agent tells Sooners Illustrated that Carter, barring a change of plan, will visit Oklahoma over the weekend. This trip will be after a pair of other visits he's currently taking.

Today, Carter is on Baylor's campus meeting with the Bears' staff. That visit is expected to end tomorrow and then Carter will head out to Utah to see the Utes at the backed on the week.

Once these two trips conclude, Carter will see OU. Sources indicate that as long as plans align, Carter will hold off on any decision until he can see Norman. The interest from Oklahoma in Carter is very real as he's an ideal fit relative to what the Sooners have been looking for.

- Over to defensive back. It's a position group many OU fans have been asking about since the spring window opened.

Oklahoma has played it patiently with the cornerback market and understandably so. The Sooners like some of the younger pieces in the room and don't want to disrupt the dynamic there if something doesn't make complete sense.

That said, the first name I'll mention here is former Tennessee State standout Jalen McClendon.

McClendon played both corner and nickel for the Tigers last year en route to being named a finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award, given annually to the top defensive player in the FCS.

Sources indicated that McClendon's likely path has been to follow his former head coach, Eddie George, to Bowling Green. But, the Sooners did speak with McClendon's representation yesterday.

A source indicates that if OU were to follow up that conversation with an invitation to visit that it'd change a lot for McClendon. Something worth monitoring moving forward.

- Last but certainly not least, another defensive back. Texas Southern graduate transfer Jayden Williams is worth bringing up as well.

Williams is a former USC Trojan from the class of 2019 who spent three seasons with the program. He'd then go on to transfer to Miami (OH) and then Texas Southern.

Now back in the portal after a strong 2024 season, Williams tells Sooners Illustrated he spoke with members of the OU staff yesterday. He's waiting to hear from them again in the near future with the goal of getting a visit setup.

Rcsodak said... (original post) Williams is a 0 star transfer. What do they see in him that nobody else does? I'm perplexed.

We aren't acting like a serious program. Everyone lambasted Riley for losing in the playoffs but that dude tampered like a mofo.

This is all a hype beast until Nov where the “injuries” pile up in a violent sport.

I'm an optimistic guy in life. Orphaned, created an amazing family, and company blah blah blah. I've never see a company this mismanaged like OU in such a short time. Jim is a great step but it is run by geriatrics and buffoons. Literally another mod at a reputable sooner site tonight said half the staff would leave for a HC job at a HS bc of NIL and portal. That's not the Mamba mentality to win 8. Maybe 8 wins which everyone will geek out over.

Not my MO. Love the Sooners since 82 but our big dubs are Stone coming back, Jim ( win) and the HC who doesn't know how to be a HC saying he's the DC bc the OSU DC played us while the protege left for WVU and the horny Rich Rod. Wild times."

I’m sure there are players in FCS, but it seems like it would be a more reliable source of guys that fill absolute holes in your roster, than a place to find stars for your team.

Also, it depends on their goals. Two and three stars from high school rankings can make the NFL, but for guys like that, the most important choice to make is to find a program where they will play, rather than a program that’s a big name in a big conference. An overlooked guy at Oachita Baptist is better off going to Arkansas State (G5) and playing a lot, rather than OU, and competing for the second team.

Can't remember if it has been mentioned or not, but Jayden Gibson tore his patellar tendon in one of his knees. That's coming off the torn ACL that knocked him out of last season in August. There's a ton of speculation that he'll never play again for OU.

Anyways, their WR room looks like warmed over dogshit.
