I think Wilkinson built that program by increasing the professionalism of the coaching, compared to peers, more than lawlessness. I have the game program from the ‘51 RRS. OU has ten assistant coaches. Texas had five.

Now, Switzer cheated like an SOB. He had to- any time he tried inserting any coaching judgment, he fucked things up.

Bud Wilkin$on handed out literal bags of cash. 2 of his 3 “titles” in the 50s resulted in bowl game bans for being on probation for cheating. He was given his marching orders to put a shine on that shitty state and he carried them out.

I’ll assume I was correct that you or anyone you know didn’t do a damn thing. Since you’re owning it.

some sooner shows on youtube are convinced that the offense is going to be good and the reason why they seem to struggle is because the Defense is that good.. they feel that they will have a top 2 defense in the SEC..  They stop short of saying it's a title contender, but they seem pretty confident in making the CFP

I took the under on 7.5 wins for OU yesterday at a casino. Sooner magic and all that, it’s pretty easy to find 5 losses on that schedule. They play an embarrassing non-con - UH, Temple, Tulane, and Maine. Then they also play South Carolina. Give them those 5 wins. You then have to find 3 more against Tenn, LSU, Auburn, Bama, Missouri, Texas, and Ole Miss.

If you think there are 8+ wins in this team, you’d have to ignore a total OL rebuild, an overrated QB causing concerns currently at practice when it comes to managing his reads, nothing at TE, CB issues, Edge issues, and a new coaching dynamic at OC. They’re also painfully thin at different spots on the depth chart even if there is starting talent - WR, QB?

Beyond all of that, you’d also have to believe that Brent Venables isn’t a slapdick yokel.

Should be a fun season.

Torrance Marshall

Marshall intended to spend his college playing career with the University of Miami, but was not accepted due to academic reasons.[1] Instead, he attended Kemper Military School, where he had 198 tackles, and later Miami-Dade Community College. In 1999, he began attending the University of Oklahoma as a criminal justice major, and was co-captain of his football team for two consecutive seasons. He was a third-team All-American as a senior and finished second on the team in total tackles. He was named MVP of the 2001 Orange Bowl, in which the Sooners defeated the Florida State Seminoles to win the national championship for the 2000 season. He was also named MVP of the Senior Bowl.[2]

If this team doesn’t win 8 games he should be  fired after the final snap. No excuse. But good luck on your bet.

I realize that that is your hope. Either you win and you're fine with Venables, or you don't and Castiglione cuts him loose. If Venables goes 6-7/7-6/8-5 this season, I think it would be hard to fire him due to the transition and the schedule. The media has been apologizing for this upcoming season with OU for months. It's both mildly irritating and funny. I think Venables is not up to the challenge and I hope he gets 10 years there to try and figure it out otherwise.

Credit where it is due - Marshall was a total badass in college and was the exact fit Stoops needed in that defense for that team. It sucked to watch it.

It’s not my hope. I have said it since the day they hired Venables, he’s not the guy. Lanning is who we should have hired. But none the less, he is who we have. My point is this is his third year, the guys we have are his guys. So if they can’t scratch out 8 wins he needs to get the fuck out of Norman fast. Like I said no excuses and more. Tired of hearing the”well these are Lincoln’s players”. Not anymore, the blood will be on Venables hands if they shit the bed, bottom line.

This schedule is why Venables was given an extension before this season. Castiglione knew he would need an extension to recruit after the season, and the season record might make it not realistic to extend it after this season.

Another standup citizen produced in Norman.

The Green Bay Packers announced Friday evening that third-year linebacker Torrance Marshall, a disappointment during his first two seasons in the league, has been suspended for a repeat violation of the NFL's substance abuse policy.

A third-round choice in 2001, Marshall actually entered the league already in the NFL's substance abuse program because he had tested positive for an unidentified drug [cocaine] at the combine workouts that preceded the draft.

There is supposedly a book out there that I have never been able to track down that describes the slush funds from those teams. The story as it was conveyed to me says that a bunch of rich oilmen in Oklahoma in the late '40s or early '50s wanted to improve the state's image and thought college football was a way to do that and put together a fund to pay players. It was supposedly offered to Oklahoma A&M College first because the basketball team was winning national championships with Hank Iba, who was also the athletic director. He didn't care for football and thought it was a passing fad so declined. The rest is history. I think it makes a lot of sense and I believe it, even if its just to make me feel better about our shitty football history.

I'm sure Wilkinson continued the practice--it's blOw-U after all--but the drawer full of cash was originated by Jim Tatum in 1946, as recorded in Jim Dent's book "The Undefeated" and confirmed by George Cross in his book "Presidents Can't Punt." Cross was a former president of blOw-U, by the way (1943-1968). Cross unburdened himself in his 1977 book, probably to salve his conscience, if any okies have one, after letting the rampant cheating continue apace during virtually all of his tenure as president and doing nothing to stop it. (He's reported to have said privately, "Hell, I was only the president of the university, I didn't run anything; the big oil alumni ran things.")

It was ever thus.

I would count more on accuracy in Cross’ book than Dent’s. Dent is an old drunk that loves a good story too much.

There's basically 5 wins built in the schedule. I'm very high on the OU defense, but Tennessee, @Auburn, neutral Texas, @Ole Miss, @Mizzou, Bama, @LSU, is absolutely brutal. I think they probably scrape 3 of those games and hit the over, with the a large caveat that the offense can't be dreadful. I've been hearing a lot of "Bedenbaugh will figure it out" from OU friends and I'm not so sure that will be the case.

They were also fresh off their historic 1945 national championship celebrated from coast to coast and probably didn’t think it was necessary.

Gotta be one of y'alls worst starting QBs ever. Can bulldoze and plow his way over defenders by powering the ball, can't pass for shit. Up there with Rhett Bomar when it comes to sucking.

I think we will find out if it was a bad decision by the time we play Texas. Arnold can spin the ball. Not saying he’s better than Gabriel, but he has talent for sure. Just need to see if he can not make the mistakes young QB’s make.

agreed. He's got the athletic talent, but unless he figures out how to read defenses better it's going to be a long season. Sawchuk going to have to put the team on his back early on

OU will not be Nebraska.  Their proximity to DFW and SEC membership ensures that.

I used to dismiss the notion that Pate was a paid shill for ATM as silly fan fiction. The more I see of the guy, while I don't doubt that he's not a paid shill for ATM, the more convinced I am that he's completely hollow and will do almost anything for money. I'd love for OU to become the next Nebraska, but, like you, it takes all of 5 seconds to think about why that isn't happening. But, hey, it's sensational shit and I am sure that idiot is getting paid in some form for saying it.

Yeah, I would love OU to experience what Nebraska has.  But it is not happening.  I do think they bricked the coaching hire with that methed out looking skeletor who they had previously run out of town for being a terrible DC.  So maybe they will be A&M level for a few years, which will be nice.

Bill Bedenbaugh will figure it out, Jackson Arnold will figure it out, the running game that was dormant until late last season will figure it out, the corners that got shredded by Fitita will figure it out, TE will figure it out. A lot of figuring it out going on in Norman. Hopium at an all time high

Nah. I doubt he would be fired. He just signed an extention. Not to mention he has a first year QB (albeit he ran off a proven QB just to keep a pussy who said he would transfer if he didn't play. Total bitch move.). I bet he gets at a minimum 3 more years to right the ship.

Yeah you are probably correct, don’t mean he shouldn’t be. The extension was all bullshit, just to show recruits and everyone else that there’s nothing to see here.
