Brent Venables to be his own play-caller in 2025

Absent the ability to clone himself, in a make-or-break season Venables is doubling-down on his successful defense while giving himself less time to oversee his moribund offense and tend to the CEO aspects of his struggling program.

Sooners Illustrated released the sooner spring depth chart and it does not disappoint. I will spoiler it below.

Highlights:

-Remember that Venables has his team continue to regularly beat the shit out of each other in practice well into the season. I don't even think this is rumor. It's some sort of source of pride and many of the OU insiders are shocked when they go to practices and it. Which leads us to ...

-Two of the OL starters (left side of the line) will be missing spring training due to torn labrum surgeries. No big deal for OL, right? Ask Tommy Brockermeyer.

-Jayden Jackson, freshman AA DT, will also be missing the spring due to torn labrum surgery. No big deal for a DT either. Right.

-Barnes (RB) is missing the spring after suffering a foot injury during winter drills.

-Jayden Gibson (WR) is out for the spring after hurting his knee again in workouts. It's alleged that the ACL is torn again, but the mods haven't confirmed.

-Jared Kanak, former highly rated LB recruit who was committed to Clemson and then came over to OU as Venables allegedly begged him to stay loyal to Dabo, is still running 4th string and going to split time also working out with the TEs.

-Gentry Williams, Peyton Bowen, and Kendal Dolby are not able to practice yet with the team, after all 3 suffered injuries in the fall campaign. Notable, but nothing to blame on anyone.

-Finally, I challenge anyone interested to offer up who they'd take from this OU two-deep and place in the Texas two-deep. I'll go first - Burks (Slot WR), Everett (C), Sexton (RT), D Williams (NT), R Mason Thomas (Edge), Eli Bowen (CB). Jackson if he comes back and there are no lingering issues with his shoulder. That's 6-7 for me and only Everett and D Williams are probably starters. It's definitely more than I would take from ATM, but that's a pretty weak group of top end talent for OU compared to the last 26 years.

Hahahahhahaa. The spin on this guy this spring was great. Dude exploded north of 275 lbs. Venables claimed they wanted him to bulk up and then the talking heads started bleating that he “looked athletic” at that weight.  Now Fawcett tweets that he’s at 245 lbs. Right. Maybe in photos from high school.

If you are a top 75 recruit, sign with Venables at OU if you want to see your career collapse in real time. Good lord.

theres a kid who is a part of the welcoming team (football) in a discord i'm in who told me that mitchell got into a bad situation with a coed.. Said that an officer spoke to BV and they were told to clean out his locker. Cop apparently told them there would be no charges because both were intoxicated, but it was the last straw

Since when are Norman police officers higher up on the command chain than the OU Head Football Coach?

rumor is that the WR that's been getting a lot of hype..Javonnie or something.. might have a broken leg

I’ll see if I find anything telling on Sooners Illustrated about it.

That said, their WR room is dogshit. That’s better than their TE room, which is dogshit wrapped in catshit. But they’ve got Burks, who this time last year was being hailed as the greatest non-QB portal pick-up/steal of all time. Turns out he’s a smallish bully against weaker competition and basically quit during the season due to soft tissue injury and a lack of heart. NIL and promises brought him back. After that dude, it’s a bunch of hobos named Bob.

At TE, Mitchell allegedly brought a handgun into the locker room. He’s too young to carry legally and those are off limits in the facilities, even at OU. On top of that, he was chronically late to practice and film room, allegedly has developed a drinking problem and was banging cocktail waitresses two at a time. He needed to be straightened out, so mentor and TE coaching savant, Joe Jon Finley, promptly kicked him off the team and pushed a non-consent story. The TE room now has 6 guys in it, including some dude they brought in from Pittsburgh State who has like 3 catches in his D2/D3 career.

Even Lehman and Plank have had to admit on their show that TE is going to be mostly blocking and a pass-eligible OT. Looking at Mateer’s offensive output, that’s probably okay. To say that he calls a WR dominant passing game is putting it mildly. That brings us back to the shittiness of the OU WR corps. I wonder if teams like Texas and Alabama will be able to get their heads around stopping a passing game dependent upon the legs of some random, shifty white dude and multiple WRs playing far above their expected levels.

they are spinning that TE isn't a "big" issue because Arbuckle and Mateer never targeted TEs a year ago. I was thinking that they might bounceback into 8/9 wins in '25, but I'm starting to waver on that.

8-9 wins against the 2025 schedule would mean OU is one of the 10 best teams in the country.

i had y'all winning these games: IL st, Temple, Kent, UM, mizzu and auburn.. that is 6 games.. all at home.

i figured you would get 2 more wins in there.. but i'm not as confident in that as I was a couple weeks ago.

Illinois State

Temple

Kent State

Ole Miss (lost almost all starting talent)

Missouri (since when is Missouri a threat to OU)

South Carolina has an amazing player on each side of the ball. They lost the rest of their DL. They’re the most overrated team in the country.

That leaves needing wins against:

-Michigan

-Auburn

-Texas (neutral site)

-@Tenn

-@Bama

-@LSU

OU beat two of those teams this past year. Winning 8 games against that schedule is not a feat of strength.

Four years running on WR injury problems. That's has to be a little more than just bad luck going on.  If I recall Clemson had high level of WR injuries when Venerables was there as well.

From Schmidt's last year at aggy .... from gigem247:

"It was believed that the run of injuries in 2021 was as much due to bad luck as anything else as I certainly haven't seen anything like it in my 50 years of following A&M football. Nonetheless, when strength and conditioning coach Jerry Schmidt returned to Oklahoma (he had been plucked from Norman by A&M boss Jimbo Fisher when he arrived in College Station), the Aggies elevated Brandon Sanders and brought on a couple of new faces on that front. There was a greater emphasis on conditioning and burst."
