Int'l rescue effort closes in on soccer team trapped for 9 days in a flooded Thai cave

I just can’t imagine being a kid trying to make a 4 hr cave dive when you can’t even fucking swim. No fucking way. I took a scuba class at UT one semester and practicing taking your mask off and breathing took a lot to calm yourself down because it’s totally unnatural to breathe when there’s water against your face like that. I can’t imagine being in a zero visibility cave in a tight surrounding and losing your mask or something.
I just don’t see how all the kids make it out alive trying to dive.

I’ve read it’s taking experienced divers five hours. Add probably 50 to 100 percent more time with a bunch of kids. And they’ll be sucking down air at about twice the rate of experienced divers.

I would guess that means stashing loads of tanks along the way and taking them out one or two at a time. It’s going to be extremely tedious and dangerous but I don’t know any other way. Unless they can knock them out but full face diving masks on them and drag them out.

May be the dumbest question of all time but, couldn't you give the kids something that completely knocks them out, put on a breathing apparatus/helmet that allows them to breath without need the assistance of a respirator, bring them out one-by-one?

Anyone know anything above diving bells or habitats?  Can you take the parts in and build a habitat in place for them?

how does monsoon work?  Is it even a guarantee that this cave drains out in 3 months?  What about a wet year?  Maybe it doesn’t drain?

See the graphic.  There are places where you can't even dice through with a scuba tank...so diving Bell or large equipment is completely out of the question.

what if you collapse the whole damned thing and poof?

Seems like it would be the best chance to save them if the only alternative is a bunch of teenagers with zero scuba experience attempting a dive that just killed a SEAL.

If gearing them out it would be best to use full face mask with comms to constantly be able to constantly coach/calm coherent kids through each phase of the exit. There are areas after the water channels to also catch some some calm. But HOLY SHIT that one “tanks off” section looks beyond sketchy in every way imaginable.

Anyone know what section the Thai diver died in?

Damn Thailand...

HONG KONG — Two boats carrying tourists off the coast of Thailand capsized in 16-foot waves near the resort island of Phuket, killing at least 33 people and leaving dozens missing, officials said Friday.

One of the boats, the double-decker cruise ship Phoenix PC Diving, was carrying 105 passengers — including 93 tourists, all from China — when it capsized Thursday after leaving Koh Racha, a popular snorkeling spot.

Phuket officials said Friday evening that 33 bodies had been recovered so far, all of them Chinese nationals. Twenty-three other people are missing.

The second boat, the Serenita, sank Thursday off Koh Mai Thon, a small resort island off the coast of Phuket. There were 42 people aboard, all of whom were rescued, officials said.

Elon musk’s idea is to use a bounce house style inflatable tube to create a dry tube that they can crawl through.

If it's inflatable how do they get inside it?

Sort of, but not exactly, from what I've read.  The cave has signs warning people not to go in during monsoon season, plus around that area it's well-known that going in during the rainy season is tantamount to a death sentence.  But apparently it's a "dare" thing for young kids, who apparently go into the entrance to the other side of the large opening and put their names on the wall or otherwise show they went to the "back" of the opening chamber, then back out.  It's kind of an initiation thing.

So they were doing that (apparently) but a flood blocked the entrance and they were forced back into the cave.  But it wasn't because they happened to take shelter - they purposely ignored the warnings and local advice and did it on purpose.  So where the fuck was the coach during all of that?

Thanks for the info, definitely did not know any of that. At the risk of sounding callous, this completely changes my feelings on the situation. I was originally thinking they were a group of innocent kids that got caught in a very unfortunate position. Now I'm thinking they are a group of dumbass kids that made a horrible decision (while apparently under the watch of their coach) that has put their lives in danger and killed a truly innocent and altruistic person who tried to help them. I still hope they make it out, but my sympathy level was a lot higher when the root cause was Mother Nature and not human stupidity.

I'm telling you.  Get a shit ton of 2000 hp, 3516 CAT water pumps and pump that fucker dry.  Or try.  No matter how much water there is, it is possible to pump more.

I had the same thought. Not knowing anything, I'd bet that the oil & gas or mining industries have some pumps that can bring the ruckus. Maybe the problem is getting them into place.

A series of linear air bladders stitched together to form the tube, insert un inflated, and then in late the bladders to create the travel tube.

FIFA has invited the boys soccer team trapped in a partly flooded cave in northern Thailand to attend the World Cup final in Russia -- that is, if they are rescued in time.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino sent a letter on Thursday to the head of the Football Association of Thailand, expressing his "deepest sympathies and support" to the families of the 12 boys and their soccer coach. Infantino said he's been "anxiously following the news" since the group disappeared inside the Tham Luang Nang Non cave in mountainous Chiang Rai province on June 23. He added that he was "greatly relieved to hear the good news" that all 13 were found alive on July 2.

"On behalf of the international football community, I would like to join you in expressing my deepest sympathies and support to the families of the players and coach, as well as my solidarity with the people of Thailand at this time of great concern," Infantino wrote. "We hope that, in some way, our words of support may help bring them a little peace and courage in these difficult moments of uncertainty and concern."

Infantino said having the Wild Boar soccer team and the coach at the World Cup final in Moscow on July 15 would "undoubtedly be a wonderful moment of communion and celebration."

"If, as we all hope, they are reunited with their families in the coming days and their health allows them to travel, FIFA would be delighted to invite them to attend the 2018 World Cup final in Moscow as our guests. I sincerely hope that they will be able to join us at the final, which will undoubtedly be a wonderful moment of communion and celebration," Infantino wrote.

The teammates, between the ages of 11 and 16, have reportedly asked the Royal Thai Navy members taking care of them in the cave about what has happened in the international soccer tournament since they got trapped.

The Football Association of Thailand posted Infantino's letter on Facebook and translated it into Thai.

Whatever they decide to do to rescue them, they better do it quick. They've got WC Final tickets next Sunday.

This is what I’ve been thinking. What is wrong with massive pumps?

Tons of mining pumps are able to displace millions of gallons within just a few hours. Why the fuck hasn’t anyone done this? Would it get clogged with spring rolls or something?

If I had to guess it’s getting the pump hose a mile or whatever into the other parts of the cave that have water. The last map I saw had 3-4 sections of submerged cave interspersed with dry sections.

That makes sense, Thai pipe is a lot shorter than American pipe...

This. The size of the hose required to pull that much water would be huge. You can't move that much water with the garden hose you'd need to make it thru all the bends and stuff.
