6 ex-officers, some of whom called themselves ‘The Goon Squad,’ plead guilty to state charges in torture of 2 Black men

The former officers pleaded guilty August 3 to federal charges in the case, in which US prosecutors said the former officers kicked down the door of a home in Braxton, Mississippi, where the Black men were living and assaulted them for two hours.

The officers did not have a warrant, and some “called themselves ‘The Goon Squad’ because of their willingness to use excessive force and not to report it,” according to a federal charging document.

The six officers were charged with a combined 13 felonies in connection with “the torture and physical abuse” of the two men that night, the Justice Department said in a news release.

* * *

According to a federal charging document, Dedmon texted Elward, Middleton and Opdyke on January 24 about going to the property in Braxton to resolve a complaint received by McAlpin. McAlpin’s White neighbor told him several Black men were staying at a White woman’s home and reported seeing suspicious behavior.

Dedmon warned the deputies there might be surveillance cameras on the property, telling them to knock on the door instead of kicking it down if they saw any, the document stated. Otherwise, they could barge in without a warrant, the document continued.

“No bad mug shots,” he said, meaning, prosecutors said, the defendants could use excessive force on parts of the body that would not be seen in a mug shot, according to the charging document. Dedmon told the others Hartfield would accompany them.

Avoiding a surveillance camera above the front door, Dedmon, Opdyke and Elward broke open the carport door while Hartfield kicked open the back door, the document stated. They encountered Parker, who was living there to help take care of the woman who owned the property, and his friend Jenkins, who was staying there temporarily.

Over the next two hours, the two men were subjected to grueling violence at the hands of the White officers, the document said. They were repeatedly tased and called racial slurs, and the officers poured milk, alcohol and chocolate syrup in their mouths. Elward threw eggs at the men, and Dedmon poured grease on Parker’s head, according to the document.

Eventually, Elward removed a bullet from his gun, forced Jenkins onto his knees and put the gun into his mouth, the document stated. Elward fired the gun, which did not discharge, then racked the slide, put the gun back in Jenkins’ mouth and pulled the trigger again, according to the document. The bullet lacerated Jenkins’ tongue, broke his jaw and went out through his neck.

According to the charging document, the officers then devised a cover story and discussed planting a gun Middleton had in his patrol car on Jenkins. Instead, Elward planted a BB gun, and the officers discarded one shell casing, the document stated. Hartfield threw the men’s soiled clothes in the woods and took the hard drive from the home’s surveillance system before throwing it in a creek, according to the document.

Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey announced in June deputies had been fired, though he did not say how many or their names. The Richland Police Department announced in July that Hartfield – who was off-duty at the time of the alleged assault – had resigned.

I posted it somewhere a week or two back, probably in the "Racism in America" thread.

This is a horrific story. I especially like the sheriff basically accepting zero blame and that cocksucker is running for reelection unopposed this fall. What a country!

All of these officers should never see the light of day. Can we talk for a bit, though, about the abominable writing at CNN and in general.

One of these guys put a gun in a man’s mouth and shot him. That’s….a BIG FUCKING DEAL. It’s buried in the article.

And it took me several reads to decipher what happened:

Try this “According to the report, put his service pistol into Jenkin’s mouth and “dry-fired” the weapon without a bullet in the chamber. He then chambered a bullet, forced the gun back in Jenkin’s mouth, and shot him resulting in a broken jaw, lacerated tongue, and neck wound.”

I dont understand how attempted murder is not one of the charges?  Jackson MS, first no water, now '60's era racial shit, man come on Mississippi.

Bc you have to prove BRD that the defended was trying to kill the victim. From all accounts it looks like the cop thought the gun was not loaded. Just because someone could have died as a result of your intentional conduct does not mean that the elements of attempted murder have been met.

Yeah I guess so.  In the end they got convicted, but his defense would have to be he only had one bullet in his gun and he thought he removed it.  Weak defense imo.

They weren’t convicted. They pled guilty.

A plea that resulted in a conviction.

Which shocks me.  These are Mississippi cops.  They aren't an outlier.  They are probably right in the fat middle of the bell curve of Mississippi cops.  Shit, they were doing what 40% of the country WANTS our cops to do -- put those mouthy darkies in their place.

No black citizen of Mississippi should ever pull over for a cop again, or let a cop inside their home.  They are a proven, undeniable lethal threat.  Voluntary contact by a black person with a Mississippi cop is dumber than sticking your dick in a gator's mouth.

Goon Squad Officers Face Sentencing in Mississippi Torture Cases
Six officers pleaded guilty last year to assaulting two Black men and shooting one in the mouth during a raid on their home.

“I experienced looking the devil in the eye,” Mr. Parker said Monday at a press conference.

The officers destroyed evidence and, to justify the shooting, falsely claimed that Mr. Jenkins had pointed a BB gun at them, according to federal prosecutors.

Three of the department’s deputies also pleaded guilty in a separate incident, but prosecutors have so far provided few details about what happened. Prosecutors are expected to read a statement written by the victim in that case, 28-year-old Alan Schmidt.

So far charges against officers in Rankin County have been narrowly focused on these two incidents, but residents in impoverished pockets of the county say that the sheriff’s department has routinely targeted them with similar levels of violence.

Last November, The New York Times and Mississippi Today published an investigation revealing that for nearly two decades, deputies in the Rankin sheriff department, many of whom called themselves the Goon Squad, would barge into homes in the middle of the night, handcuff people and torture them for information or confessions.

In the pursuit of drug arrests, the deputies rammed a stick down one man’s throat until he vomited, dripped molten metal onto another man’s skin and held people down and beat them until they were bloody and bruised, according to dozens of people who said they witnessed or experienced the raids.

Many of those who said they had experienced violence filed lawsuits or formal complaints detailing their encounters with the department. A few said they had contacted Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey directly, only to be ignored.

Sheriff Bailey, who has denied knowledge of the incidents, has faced calls to resign by local activists and the N.A.A.C.P. He has said he will not step down.

Malcolm Holmes, a professor in the department of criminal justice and sociology at the University of Wyoming, said that the Goon Squad case was “going to be one that finds its way into the chronicles of history.”

“There’s so much well-documented evidence that this is a pattern of behavior,” he said, noting that the case revealed “something we’ve covered up for a long time, particularly in rural America.”

The sentencing hearings this week are expected to reveal more details about violence perpetrated by Rankin County deputies, including what happened to Mr. Schmidt.

In an interview with The Times and Mississippi Today last week, Mr. Schmidt spoke publicly for the first time about what happened in December 2022 when a Rankin County deputy pulled him over for driving with an expired tag.

According to the federal indictment, deputies Christian Dedmon, Hunter Elward and Daniel Opdyke arrived at the scene shortly afterward. Two other deputies, including the one who pulled Mr. Schmidt over, were also present throughout the arrest, Mr. Schmidt said. Neither has been criminally charged.

Mr. Schmidt said the deputies accused him of stealing tools from his boss, and then Mr. Dedmon pressed a gun to his head and fired it into the air before threatening to dump his body in the Pearl River.

“I thought this was it,” Mr. Schmidt said. “I’m never going to see my family again.”

Mr. Dedmon and the other deputies punched Mr. Schmidt and held his arm in a fire ant hill, then shocked him repeatedly with a Taser, Mr. Schmidt said.

Mr. Dedmon also pressed his genitals against the man’s face and bare buttocks as he yelled for help and kicked at the deputy, Mr. Schmidt said.

“It still goes through my head constantly,” Mr. Schmidt said of the experience.

Even to me, Mr. Leniency in sentencing, tends to agree that is not enough. Most federal crimes have a statutory max of 20 years or less, but they can be stacked.

Upon further reading, these are federal civil rights charges, only, not the underlying crimes committed in the course. That explains the statutory max of 20.

Also, his plea agreement apparently set the maximum at 20 (maybe pled to just one count at 20 max, so nothing to stack).

There is no fucking way that the sheriff, other deputies, even the local judges and prosecutors, local mayors, local cops, didn't know this shit was going on.

Lock up every single fucking one of them. Lock up their wives, parents, children over 12, lock up anybody who is facebook friends with them, lock up anyone who voted for them, lock up anyone they owe money to.

Like when a single case of avian bird flu is found in a flock of chickens, you destroy the entire flock. Same idea applies here.
